    Background: In the last decade, the advances in technology have included robotics as an intervention tool to promote adaptive and social communication skills in subjects with Autism spectrum disorder. The goal of this study is to promote community living skills in adolescents with ASD, using a Programmable toy robot as a model and narrative agent of a social story related to the target activity. Method: The study was conducted in an Italian public Social Health Service for adolescents with Neurodevelopmental disorder and included four adolescents with severe Autism spectrum disorder. The experiment concerned the application of the Lego Boots programmable toy robot as a model used for the interpretation of a social story related to the execution of a life activity in the community (making a purchase). Results: A multiple A-B-A baseline experimental design across subjects was used. All participants reached the target criteria: at least 80% of the total behaviors and 100% of social communication behaviors of the purchase activity identified through the task analysis procedure. Conclusion: Our results have confirmed the effectiveness of programmable toy robots modeling for teaching community living skills to adolescents with autism. They support the idea that robot-assisted intervention can combine social story with the modeling standard treatment to improve adaptive and social communication skills

    Cryptochrome interaction networks across different tissues in Drosophila melanogaster

    Background: Drosophila CRYPTOCHROME (dCRY) is a blue light-sensitive protein involved in various biological processes, including photoreception, circadian rhythm regulation, synaptic plasticity, and magnetoreception. Its circadian function is strictly connected with light: upon light exposure, dCRY undergoes a conformational change, becoming active and binding to various proteins. However, it can also form complexes in the absence of light, with its function varying depending on the cell type in which it is expressed. Results: Here, we use an experimental approach based on co-immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectrometry analysis, obtaining the in vivo interactome of dCRY in two distinct cell populations - retina photoreceptors and glial cells - at two specific time points: just before lights-on (ZT0) and one hour after lights-on (ZT1). To gain deeper insights into the functional dynamics of dCRY, we constructed reliable protein-protein interaction networks in both cell types and across the two experimental conditions, revealing a complex landscape of interactions. Additionally, we explored the biological pathways associated with the identified dCRY interactors, highlighting several tissue- and time-specific enrichments. We focused on RNA-related pathways, indicating that dCRY and its interactors are involved in regulating RNA metabolism in photoreceptors at ZT0 and in glial cells at ZT1. Finally, as a case study, we further investigated the functions of the RNA-binding protein SQUID, found to interact with dCRY in both tissues. Notably, the impaired circadian locomotor behavior exhibited by Squid mutant flies accounts for the involvement of this hnRNP in the generation of the circadian rhythmicity. Conclusions: In conclusion, our work provides the first tissue- and time-specific dCRY interactome, offering valuable insights into previously unrecognized biological processes in which it may be involved. Specifically, its potential role in the regulation of RNA metabolism contributes crucial evidence concerning the relationship between the circadian clock and RNA metabolism, thereby laying the groundwork for future research in this area

    Mineral oil contamination along the cocoa supply chain: impact of storage and transportation in jute bags and assessment of contamination transfer into cocoa powder and cocoa butter

    On-line high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) – gas chromatography (GC) analysis of 28 whole cocoa beans before and after transport in jute bags contaminated with mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) showed that average saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) increased from 0.9 to 9.6 mg/kg, with aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) reaching 2.3 mg/kg. On average 40 % of the MOH migrated into whole beans reached the shelled beans, with a cut-off at n -C25. Post-transport jute bags contained diverse mixtures of MOH, varying in both amount and molecular weight distribution, as well as MOAH percentage. It was estimated that MOAH n -C10–25 exceeding 220 mg/kg in new jute bags expose whole beans to contamination above 2 mg/kg. GC × GC coupled to single quadrupole mass spectrometry (MS) proved effective for detailed MOH characterization. Throughout the supply chain, MOH contamination was transferred to cocoa mass, sometimes influenced by external lubricant inputs, and partitioned into cocoa butter and powder according to fat content

    BiCrossNet: resource-efficient cross-view geolocalization with binary neural networks

    This paper presents BiCrossNet, a novel approach to cross-view geolocalization utilizing binary neural networks to significantly reduce computational complexity while maintaining competitive performance. Key contributions include the development of a Bi-Gradual Unfreezing method to enhance transfer learning, a Bi-Partitioned Optimization strategy to improve training stability, and the use of logit-based knowledge distillation to supplement standard losses. Experimental results on the University-1652 and SUES-200 datasets demonstrate that BiCrossNet establishes a new benchmark in the efficiency-performance trade-off. It achieves up to a 90.87-fold reduction in operations and uses 4.64 times less disk space compared to similar-performing state-of-the-art models on the SUES-200 dataset, and a 30-fold reduction in operations and 5.13 times less disk space on the University-1652 dataset.     The keystone of Aristotle's contribution to political anthropology is his notion of practical philosophy. Being a kind of philosophy, or science, practical philosophy is not just a human faculty relative to choice, like, for example, wisdom (phronesis); nor is it a kind of theoretical investigation, which deals with the world as it is, independently from human desires, aspirations and intentions. Rather, it is an attempt to understand the principles of choice in human action, aimed at orienting decision-making. Hence, it investigates the position of humans in reality: their ways of connecting to the world via their cognitive and volitional capacities. Aristotle's practical philosophy was eclipsed during modernity, but it regained attention through the work of both continental philosophers (e.g., Hannah Arendt and Eric Voegelin) and analytical philosophers (e.g., Elizabeth Anscombe and Philippa Foot): they highlight the relevance that Aristotle's methodology can still have for political anthropology

    In her epistle to Ulysses (Her. 1), Ovid’s Penelope has recourse to arguments that, in my view, resemble conceptually and lexically some lines from Clytemnestra’s famous Trugrede in Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. The article brings to light and discusses these so far unexplored similarities between the elegiac letter and the tragic rhesis in keeping with recent trends in the Ovidian poetics of the Heroides: as is well known, Ovid’s heroines act not only as writers, but first and foremost as readers, being able, as they are, to draw on a variety of literary sources in order to build their own elegiac voice and their identity as abandoned wome
