    The environmental impact, carbon emissions and sustainability of computing in the ATLAS experiment

    ATLAS, a general-purpose experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), makes use of a large internationally-distributed computing infrastructure, including over 106 TB of managed data on disk and tape and almost one million simultaneously running CPU cores. Upgrades for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will increase the required computing resources by a factor of 3–4 by the beginning of the 2030s, and by an order of magnitude before the conclusion of data taking at the beginning of the 2040s. These resources are spread over around 100 computing sites worldwide. Efforts are underway within the experiment to evaluate and mitigate various aspects of the environmental impact of the sites, with the additional long-term goal of making recommendations to the sites that will significantly reduce the total expected environmental impact in the HL-LHC era. These efforts take several forms: building awareness in the experiment community, adjusting aspects of the computing policy, and modifications of data center configurations, either in ways that take advantage of particular features of ATLAS workloads or in generic ways that reduce the environmental impact of the computing resources. This paper describes the ongoing investigations and approaches that have already provided useful and actionable outcomes

    Drone‐Based High‐Resolution LiDAR for Undercanopy Archaeology in Mediterranean Environment: Rusellae Case Study (Italy)

    This paper presents a novel methodology and workflow successful in identifying and mapping undercanopy archaeology in woodland Mediterranean areas. The study area is characterized by dense vegetation typical of the Mediterranean area, located in southern Tuscany (Italy), within the territory of the ancient city of Rusellae next to the Tyrrhenian seaside. In February 2021, a drone-based LiDAR acquisition was led over an area of 550 ha, with an average of ~700 points/m2. Specifically, the combination of aerial drone and LiDAR sensor enabled us to obtain high-resolution and high-quantity data, requiring significant processing efforts facilitated by the collaboration among various expertise in different fields, such as archaeology, computer science and geomatics. Among the most significant, this experience demonstrates the implementation of a methodology that, under certain circumstances, can be effective for the archaeological study of Mediterranean landscapes covered by dense canopy and undergrowth vegetation. The results provide new insights into these areas by shedding light on previously unknown archaeological features and enhancing our understanding of past landscapes

    La Sperimentazione didattica “visualizzata”. Riflessioni sulla città in una serie di mostre alla Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Milano

    Il contributo analizza la sperimentazione didattica promossa presso la Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Milano tra la fine degli anni sessanta e la metà degli anni settanta, in un contesto segnato da profonde trasformazioni culturali e sociali. In questo quadro, le mostre “Per quale Milano” (1973), “Mostra crescente sulla città” (1974) e “La città ostile” (1976) rappresentano espressioni emblematiche di una didattica alternativa, fondata su paradigmi partecipativi, interdisciplinari e critici. Tali esposizioni, nate all’interno dei laboratori sperimentali, visualizzavano le riflessioni teoriche e i percorsi di ricerca maturati negli anni precedenti, traducendo l’istanza di una conoscenza attiva e socialmente impegnata. L’analisi di queste esperienze, integrata dal riferimento a iniziative come il seminario Strumenti della cultura marxista per la critica architettonica e urbanistica, permette di mettere in luce il tentativo di ridefinire il rapporto tra sapere accademico, prassi politica e trasformazione urbana, delineando un paradigma educativo innovativo e fortemente connesso alla realtà contemporanea

    Assessing Acetyl-Coenzyme A Carboxylase Activity and Inhibition in Caenorhabtidis elegans Using a Partially Purified Protein Extract

    Acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC) catalyzes the ATP-dependent carboxylation of acetyl-CoA into malonyl-CoA, the first step in fatty acid biosynthesis. ACC is increasingly recognized as being crucial for energy metabolism, leading to its emergence as a potential therapeutic target mainly for obesity and cancer. All previous ACC kinetics studies were conducted with pure enzyme preparations and measurements at several substrate concentrations using methods such as radioactivity counting of labeled substrate(s) and/or product(s) or UV estimation of chromatographically resolved components. In alternative, a real-time kinetics method based on HPLC or NMR monitoring was developed and successfully applied using partially purified protein extracts and a single substrate concentration. Kinetic parameters were derived for C. elegans ACC in the absence and presence of the ACC inhibitor avocadene acetate, a compound present in avocadoes. Both monitoring techniques yielded consistent kinetic parameters that compared well with previously reported values and provided new insights into the inhibition mechanism

    The X-rays detecting system of the FAMU experiment for the measurement of the muon transfer rate to carbon

    The FAMU experiment is based on spectroscopy experiment. It uses exotic atoms to measure the proton Zemach radius, a convolution of the electronic and magnetic charge distribution. Specifically, there exists a direct correlation between the Zemach radius of the proton and the hyperfine splitting (HFS) in the muonic hydrogen energy ground level (μp). It is therefore a complementary way to study the proton compared to electron scattering experiments. The FAMU experimental technique takes advantage of the fact that, for given hydrogen gas mixtures, muons pass from the μp to the heavier gas atoms at a rate that is dependent on the μp energy. This results in X-rays counting rate from the heavier muonic atoms deexcitation cascade that depends on the energy of the μp. A fast detection system and excellent energy resolution in the 20-400 keV range are needed for this high precision experiment. The LaBr3(Ce) detectors are read by PMTs in this phase of the experiment. The behavior of the muon transfer rate from hydrogen to carbon has been evaluated using a detailed analysis of the performances of the detectors, which are presented below
