Measurement of the top quark mass with the ATLAS detector using tt ̄ events with a high transverse momentum top quark
The mass of the top quark is measured using top-quark-top-antiquark pair events with high transverse momentum top quarks. The dataset, collected with the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The analysis targets events in the lepton-plus-jets decay channel, with an electron or muon from a semi-leptonically decaying top quark and a hadronically decaying top quark that is sufficiently energetic to be reconstructed as a single large-radius jet. The mean of the invariant mass of the reconstructed large-radius jet provides the sensitivity to the top quark mass and is simultaneously fitted with two additional observables to reduce the impact of the systematic uncertainties. The top quark mass is measured to be mt=172.95±0.53 GeV, which is the most precise ATLAS measurement from a single channel
Metamorphoses of Evil in Contemporary Adaptations of The Tempest
As the supreme master over his heterotopic microcosm, Prospero embodies the ethical ambivalence of power at the heart of early modern debates on sovereignty, master-slave relations, and proto-colonial dynamics. His regime, built on total surveillance and absolute dominion, is a fantasy of omnipotence that challenges early seventeenth-century conceptions of divine authority. Caliban, long seen as the embodiment of savage monstrosity, disrupts and complicates Prospero’s dominion, whose evil evokes early modern anxieties about scientific progress, divine foreknowledge, predestination, and the crisis of subjectivity also spurred by new geographical discoveries. This article explores how Prospero’s tyranny and theatre of revenge have been reimagined as metaphors for omnipresent control systems in three contemporary adaptations of The Tempest: Margaret Atwood’s novel Hag-Seed (2016), Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s HBO series Westworld (2016- 2022), and Jeanette Winterson’s short story “Ghost in the Machine” (2023). By casting Prospero as the primary evil-doer and probing the ethical implications of his art, these works confront pressing issues such as the rise of artificial intelligence, the debate on free will and determinism, shifting definitions of humanity, the reinforcement of privilege, and emerging systems of control. As we shall see, these reinterpretations testify to the enduring potential of Shakespeare’s play, in which the embryonic forms of today’s ethical debates can be glimpsed
Measurement of B+→τ+ντ branching fraction with a hadronic tagging method at Belle II
We present a measurement of the branching fraction of B+ → τ+ντ decays using 387 ± 6 × 106 Υ(4S) collected between 2019and2022 withtheBelle II detector at theSuperKEKBeþ e+ e- collider.We reconstruct the accompanying B- meson using the hadronic tagging method, while B+ → τ+ντ candidates are identified in the recoil. We find evidence for B+ → τ+ντ decays at 3.0 standard deviations, including systematic uncertainties.The measured branching fraction is(Formula presended.)
Living near dumpsites: A machine learning and econometric assessment of how environmental conditions shape rental prices
: This research examines the impact of environmental (dis)amenities on residential rental values in the urban areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Using a unique dataset of 849 households and geospatial data on 35 irregular dumpsites, we quantify how proximity to environmental disamenities depresses rental prices. Specifically, results confirm that irregular dumpsites significantly depress rental values, especially for properties situated near the closest distance rings. The analysis employs a hedonic pricing model, complemented by instrumental variable (IV) mediation analysis and machine learning (ML) classification models, such as Naïve Bayes, k-nearest neighbours (k-NN) and classification trees, to explore both causal relationships and predictive patterns. The IV mediation approach confirms that the presence of odorous sewers significantly mediates the negative effect of dumpsites on rent. ML models, particularly k-NN, demonstrate high predictive accuracy (>90%) in identifying high-rent properties based solely on environmental variables. These findings emphasise the economic cost of environmental degradation in urban housing markets and highlight the necessity of stricter waste management policies and improved sanitation infrastructure to drive sustainable urban development
Cinema and Pleasure: An Introduction
There has been no concept as foundational as pleasure in the history of film studies and film theory in particular. During the 1970s, film scholars debated pleasure as a deeply ambivalent promise, some finding it an outright synonym for the self-delusion and alienation driven by the market forces that shape commercial cinema’s narrative language and ideological apparatus. Today, scholars and cinephiles alike are still haunted by an unresolved, latent preoccupation with the issue of collective and individual pleasure. This dossier investigates the matter on a global scale, working from the nineteenth century to the present. Spanning the joys of criticism and critique, lost archives of queer fandom, transgressive genres of eroticism, and film theories of daydreaming and escapism, the six essays of the dossier intervene in the discourse around cinema pleasure by revealing its forgotten genealogies and wayward potentials
Gorbačëv e l’Ucraina: un rapporto contrastato
Historians have questioned Ukraine’s role in the dissolution of the Soviet Union, offering conflicting assessments of the extent to which Kyiv’s disengagement influenced the Soviet state’s final fate. Despite the wealth of historiographical reflection on Ukraine’s significance in the collapse of the Ussr, studies on the reception of perestroika in Ukraine and on Gorbachev’s attitude toward the republic are scarce. This essay aims to fill this gap by examining memoirs, speeches by the general secretary, and firsthand archival sources. The essay reveals that Gorbachev had a personal and familial connection to Ukraine and considered its participation in the new Union treaty he was drafting to be
essential. Furthermore, the efforts of the first and last Soviet president were guided by fears of a «Yugoslavia squared» scenario in the second Slavic republic. In his opinion, this scenario could have played out in Crimea, Donbas, and the southern regions if the leadership in Kyiv had not only embarked on the path to independence but also on the path of “separation” from the remnants of the Soviet Union
University–industry interaction and firms’ innovation performance: new evidence from the biopharmaceutical industry
This study examines the impact of university-industry (U-I) interaction on firms’ inno-
vation performance in the biopharmaceutical industry, focusing on understanding the
temporal relationship between co-publishing and innovation. Using a sample of Italian
biopharmaceutical firms from 2000 to 2010, we explore whether collaborative research,
specifically co-publishing between public and private research entities, influences firms’
likelihood of innovation and the intensity of their innovation activities. Our investigation
sheds light on the temporal aspects of the knowledge generation process and its implica-
tions for firms’ innovation endeavours. It reveals an “anticipatory effect” of co-publishing
on innovation outcomes. Our findings, corroborated by a set of robustness checks, detect
that the influence of collaboration on innovation activities precedes the appearance of a
joint publication, ruling out the hypothesis of “defensive publication” as a complementary
part of a firm’s overall IP protection strategy pursued by biopharmaceutical firms
