    Comparing Lattices and Bilinear Parings in CP-ABE

    Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption enables fine-grained access control by binding ciphertext decryption to user attributes. While most practical schemes are pairing-based and rely on assumptions vulnera- ble to quantum attacks, lattice-based approaches offer post-quantum secu- rity at the cost of reduced expressiveness. In this work, we present the first direct benchmark of open-source implementations from both families across diverse hardware, assessing their performance toward the design of practical quantum-resilient access control systems

    Joint optimization of multi-trip vehicle scheduling, passenger assignment, and timetable for on-demand customized bus services

    On-demand customized bus (CB) services represent an emerging form of demand-responsive public transportation, providing unique advantages in addressing passengers’ diverse travel needs and advancing sustainable mobility. To enhance operational efficiency and improve passenger satisfaction, this paper investigates a new CB service problem. The goal is to minimize total vehicle operating costs and penalties for unserved orders by jointly optimizing multi-trip vehicle scheduling, passenger assignment, and timetabling. We first formulate the problem into a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model, which is then linearized into an equivalent one. To efficiently solve this model, we develop a tailored adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm, which incorporates a three-stage heuristic algorithm, a stop assignment strategy, and a set of customized operators. Extensive experiments on Sioux Falls and New York City cases validate the proposed algorithm’s effectiveness and efficiency. Furthermore, we demonstrate that multi-trip vehicle scheduling can reduce total costs compared to single-trip vehicle scheduling, with a reduction of 11.5%. Additionally, we derive management insights for CB operators by conducting sensitivity analysis experiments on critical parameters. Our findings indicate that adopting multi-trip scheduling, optimizing the number and spatial distribution of candidate stops, and adjusting trip frequency according to demand levels can effectively lower the operational costs of CB services

    Analysis of Objective 3D Mesh Quality Metrics for Cultural Heritage

    Extended reality technologies are increasingly used in cultural heritage for preserving and accessing sites and artworks, where 3D model acquisition and rendering are key. Despite progress in reconstruction methodologies, a standardized approach to quality assessment is still missing. This study aims to evaluate objective quality metrics - both image-based and model-based, Full Reference and No Reference - applied to 3D models generated using the Structure from Motion algorithm. By varying parameters such as the number of images, number of triangles, and texture resolution, we examine the impact of these factors on metric outcomes, aiming to assess their reliability in cultural heritage applications

    La concordia tra Costantino e Licinio e il così detto «Laterculus Veronensis»

    Diplomatic edition of the so-called Laterculus Veronensis (cod. misc. Bibl. Capit. Verona II/2). The four sections of the L.V. illustrate, through lists, the administrative structure (dioceses and provinces) of the empire and the distribution of barbarian populations as perceived at the time of writing and not updated. The fragment may be dated to the year 314 CE. The so-called L.V. may have been extracted from a high quality book composed for an aristocratic senator of Rome, probably the proconsul of Asia in 314, the year of maximum harmony between Constantine and Licinius. The work may have been produced and preserved in Italy. Between the 6th and early 7th Centuries, a scribe copied the fragment known as L.V. at the end of the Verona miscellaneous codex. The fragment was copied as an appendix to a highly successful geographical work, also arranged in lists, the Cosmographia Iulii Caesaris / Iulii Honorii. It seems highly probable that the copyist already found the fragment of L.V. at the end of the Cosmographia in his antigraph. The Veronese miscellaneous codex was intended for the education of the nobility and clergy of northern Italy and preserved a trace of the concordia between Constantine and Licinius

    Experiments with resurrections: the palingenesis of plants in early modern England

    Stemming from Paracelsus and his followers, the rebirth of plants from their ashes became matter of investigation in early modern Europe, a curiosity that attracted the attention of savants. Joseph Du Chesne’s account of plant palingenesis spurred the interest of chemists and natural philosophers who tried to reproduce the experiments he described. In 1656 Athanasius Kircher S.J. achieved the revivification of plants from their ashes at the Collegio Romano in the presence of Queen Christina and dealt with this topic in Mundus subterraneus (1665). His account, allegedly based on experiments, gave new impetus to the investigation of palingenesis. Kenelm Digby managed to obtain information from Kircher and repeated the experiments of resuscitating plants. Boyle examined this topic as part of his research into generation. Like other British devout natural philosophers, he sought to use plant palingenesis for apologetic ends, namely to argue that the resurrection of the dead was not against reason. Boyle, who thoroughly investigated this subject, reached the conclusion that the narratives of plant rebirth from their ashes were not reliable. Despite Boyle’s scepticism about the possibility of achieving the resurrection of plants, Fellows of the Royal Society like Daniel Coxe kept investigating this matter. In the 18th century plant palingenesis lost ground in scientific circles becoming chiefly a natural curiosity of nature, one of the wonders to be shown to a wide audience

    Insight on the Durability of Steel Reinforced Grout (SRG) Systems for the Strengthening of Historical Constructions

    Steel reinforced grout (SRG) composites, due to their high performance, proved effective for the external strengthening of existing structures and for the seismic protection of historical constructions. Nonetheless, to comply with the conservation criteria for ancient buildings, they have to ensure an adequate level of durability against environmental agents. Within this framework, the study aims to investigate the durability of galvanized (zinc-coated) SRG, the most adopted typology today, considering four different textiles and four cement or lime mortars, and the most critical aging conditions for the tensile behaviour. Tensile tests were conducted following immersion in saltwater and alkaline solutions, exposure to freeze-thaw cycles, aggressive soil conditions, and high temperatures. The results demonstrated the beneficial performance of galvanized SRG while also identifying some issues that warrant further investigation. These findings suggest the need for a more thorough evaluation of its appropriate use for the long-term preservation of built and historical heritage

    In this essay, we propose a) in the first part to contextualize the figure of Dieter Henrich compared to his «Fixpunkte» (existential and philosophical), and then b) in the second part to explore some constellations traceable in his thought. The intent of this essay is therefore first of all to descend into the darkness (Dunkelheit) that enveloped the «Grunderfahrungen» of Henrich’s early years and to go in search of the first familiar and academic "Fixpunktes" of his existence, towards which Henrich has repeatedly addressed his gratitude (Dankbarkeit). Subsequently, we will focus on the plexus «Subjektivität und Kunst», with references to other more mature theoretical constellations that defined themselves in the American years and which continued to orient the always original, tireless, and soberly revolutionary thoughts of Dieter Henrich's, up to the limits of heterodoxy.Das vorrangige Interesse im ersten Teil dieses Aufsatzes ist, etwas Licht in das Dunkel zu bringen, das die Grunderfahrungen der frühen Jahre Henrichs umgab, und nach den ersten familiären und wissenschaftlichen Bezugspunkten seiner Existenz zu suchen, auf die er immer wieder dankbar zurückkam.     Lattice Boltzmann simulations for soft flowing matter

    Over the last decade, the Lattice Boltzmann method has found major scope for the simulation of a large spectrum of problems in soft matter, from multiphase and multi-component microfluidic flows, to foams, emulsions, colloidal flows, to name but a few. Crucial to many such applications is the role of supramolecular interactions which occur whenever mesoscale structures, such as bubbles or droplets, come in close contact, say of the order of tens of nanometers. Regardless of their specific physico-chemical origin, such near-contact interactions are vital to preserve the coherence of the mesoscale structures against coalescence phenomena promoted by capillarity and surface tension, hence the need of including them in Lattice Boltzmann schemes. Strictly speaking, this entails a complex multiscale problem, covering about six spatial decades, from centimeters down to tens of nanometers, and almost twice as many in time. Such a multiscale problem can hardly be taken by a single computational method, hence the need for coarse-grained models for the near-contact interactions. In this review, we shall discuss such coarse-grained models and illustrate their application to a variety of soft flowing matter problems, such as soft flowing crystals, strongly confined dense emulsions, flowing hierarchical emulsions, soft granular flows, as well as the transmigration of active droplets across constrictions. Finally, we conclude with a few considerations on future developments in the direction of quantum-nanofluidics, machine learning, and quantum computing for soft flows applications
