The tutorial role of university faculty and the provision of academic tutoring services to enhance the students’ educational experience
This contribution explores one specific aspect of faculty development, namely the tutorial role
of university professors. In the Italian context, this role is highlighted in various legislative
documents (Ministerial Decree 45/2013; Law No. 240/2010; Presidential Decree 382/1980)
and is often complemented and supported by the work of tutors – PhD students or senior
students – within specific tutoring services (Ticknor, 2014; Moretti et al., 2015; Burgalassi et
al., 2019; Da Re et al., 2023). The main forms of tutoring in Italian universities include:
orientation tutoring, which supports students during transitional phases; academic tutoring,
aimed at providing study assistance and enhancing students' skills to successfully manage their
university studies; specialized tutoring, designed for students with special educational needs
(CRUI, 1995; CNUDD, 2014). The research was conducted within the framework of the
‘S.Tu.Di.’ academic tutoring service at the Department of Education of Roma Tre University.
It involved coordinating faculty members, tutors, and students who took part in the tutoring
activities during the academic years from 2022 to 2025. The results of assessments of students’
basic and transversal skills – administered before and after the tutoring activities – were
analyzed. The research methodology adopted a mixed-methods approach (Creswell & Plano
Clark, 2006; Trinchero & Robasto, 2019), employing tools such as questionnaires and
interviews. The main findings of the study highlight the strategic role of academic tutoring
services in enhancing the quality of students' educational experience and in reducing both
dropout rates and delays in academic progress
Mutilated Veternas: The Heroic Representation of Disability in Italian Children’s Literature
This paper highlights the significant change in the representation of disability
in children’s literature with the advent of World War I and fascism in Italy in order
to clarify the use of disabled veteran characters for ideological purposes. During
wartime, in Italy, there is a substantial increase in the production of books with
historical and war themes as well as biographies emphasizing the heroism and sacrifice
of those who defended their nation. Many works of children’s literature implicitly
aim to educate future recruits in the values of sacrifice for the homeland, and they prematurely militarise childhood and children’s play. The Italian entry into the war
leads to a major turning point in the representation of disability in children’s books:
the huge number of war invalids drives an unprecedented revaluation of the image
of physical disabilities, mutilated veterans become a legitimate social issue, and their
representation gains a new public dignity because their bodies bear the marks of their
patriotism and valiant sacrifice. However, the representation of disabled veterans in
children’s books is typically one-dimensional and serves ideological purposes
Efficient Modeling and Simulation of Large PMUT Arrays for Biomedical Applications
This paper presents three innovative numerical modeling techniques tailored to meet the substantial computational demands of high-density Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (PMUT) arrays, increasingly utilized in medical ultrasound imaging. The first strategy adopts first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to model the thin multilayered structure of PMUTs as equivalent 2D-shell elements, addressing the ultra-thin nature of these devices while maintaining the inherent 3D properties of the piezoelectric materials. The second, being an FE-based modeling technique, leverages Model Order Reduction (MOR) to condense the dynamic behavior of PMUTs into a limited set of piezo-mechanical eigenmodes, drastically reducing computational load during coupled acoustic analysis by minimizing the degrees of freedom (DOF) to those of the precomputed eigenmodes. The third approach likewise employs these modes while introducing the Discontinuous Galerkin Spectral Element Method to enhance accuracy and handle nonconforming grids effectively across extensive PMUT arrays. Validation of these models was conducted via simulation of a 1-D PMUT array, fabricated using sol-gel PZT thin-film-based MEMS technology, exhibiting a high correlation between the experimental hydrophone measurements and simulated acoustic pressures and spectra, thus confirming the efficacy of the proposed methods. These models substantially decrease computing demands while preserving excellent accuracy, offering a rapid and reliable framework that is particularly advantageous during the PMUT design process
La politica energetica dell’UE quale “laboratorio sperimentale” per la solidarietà europea
Le sentenze sul caso Opal hanno segnato uno spartiacque nella definizione di una politica energetica dell’Unione basata sul bilanciamento tra interessi a livello nazionale e sovranazionale. Il presente lavoro intende indagare in quale misura l’accezione di solidarietà ivi delineata possa essere considerata una “nuova struttura portate” per le misure energetiche adottate a livello sovranazionale, esaminando le tendenze di sviluppo rinvenibili nei più recenti atti normativi e nell’orientamento giurisprudenziale della Corte di giustizia.The Opal case judgments have marked a turning point in the definition of the Union's energy policy that balances interests at national and supranational levels. Optical characterization of the Advanced Virgo gravitational wave detector for the O4 observing run
ECODRIVE: eco-driving to reduce infrastructures vehicular emissions
This thesis investigates the potential of intelligent traffic management systems to mitigate the environmental impact of private road transport without compromising the operational efficiency of road infrastructure. The primary objective is to assess how specific traffic control policies can reduce both noise and air pollution, while ensuring acceptable traffic flow conditions. A simulation-based methodological framework was developed, integrating microscopic traffic models with emission models for both noise and air pollutants. This framework was first applied to a hypothetical Toy Network and later validated on a real case study: the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) in Rome. The tested policies included differentiated speed limits, dynamic lane usage (including selective opening of emergency lanes), and variations in traffic demand and vehicle fleet composition. Their effectiveness was evaluated in terms of reductions in emissions, energy consumption, and impact on levels of service. Results show that noise emissions can be reduced by up to 15% on the Toy Network, with consistent trends confirmed on the Real Network, demonstrating the scalability of the proposed strategies. However, energy consumption reductions remained limited to about 7%, highlighting the challenges of improving energy efficiency in dense urban environments. To identify optimal policy combinations, two optimization algorithms—Local Search and Coordinate Descent—were implemented. These algorithms successfully balanced environmental benefits and traffic performance, identifying targeted speed limit strategies and controlled emergency lane openings as the most effective measures. This research contributes to the field of sustainable mobility by addressing the dual challenge of environmental protection and infrastructure efficiency. It adopts an integrated mitigation approach, capable of simultaneously addressing noise and air pollution. The proposed methodology is flexible, adaptable to different network types, and offers practical support for decision-makers in designing environmentally conscious traffic management strategies. The findings reinforce the idea that intelligent traffic systems can play a pivotal role in reducing the environmental footprint of road transport, without sacrificing usability and service quality of road infrastructure

Il lavoro che si presenta è l’esito di una ricerca volta ad indagare la disciplina relativa alle
strade di Roma, allo studio di come questa sia cambiata nel corso del tempo, di come sia mutata la gestione della manutenzione, ed in particolare di come si sia trasformata la tecnica di pavimentazione e la cura degli ambienti urbani.
In questo secondo contributo che si pone in continuità con l’articolo pubblicato nel precedente numero di questa rivista, si prosegue l’analisi, basata su fonti storiche‐archivistiche, dello sviluppo teorico e operativo di questa componente non secondaria della storia urbana.
La giurisdizione delle strade, si dimostra, è strettamente correlata alle politiche di gestione
e amministrazione e la sua evoluzione accompagna il progresso tecnologico che, attraverso
successive sperimentazioni, ha condotto alla definizione dei panorami urbani storici e alla
declinazione poliedrica e articolata delle pavimentazioni premoderne. Un patrimonio oggi a
rischio di estinzione a causa delle scelte contemporanee orientate alla omologazione dei
manti stradali della città.The work presents the result of a research aimed at investigating the discipline concerning the
streets of Rome, addressed to the study of how it has changed over time, how the regulation of maintenance has advanced, and in particular how the paving technique and the care of urban environments have evolved.
This second contribution, which is in continuity with the article published in the previous issue
of this journal, continues the analysis, based on historical‐archival sources, of the theoretical
and operational development of this non‐secondary component of urban history.
The jurisdiction of the roads, it is demonstrated, is closely related to the policies of management
and administration and its evolution accompanies the technological progress that, through successive experiments, led to the definition of historical urban landscapes and the multifaceted
and articulated declination of premodern pavements.
A heritage now threatened with extinction due to contemporary choices oriented to the homologation of road surfaces of the city
