La selva del Nilo. Cassiodoro e l’economia del papiro nei regni post-romani

    No full text

Update of the statement on safety of cannabidiol as a novel food

    No full text
During the assessment of cannabidiol (CBD) as a novel food, in 2022 the NDA Panel identified significant data gaps. Concerns focused on potential adverse effects on the liver, gastrointestinal tract, endocrine, nervous and reproductive systems. Literature searches covering animal and human studies from the previous Statement until June 2024 confirmed the persistence of these gaps, as many of the new studies suffer from methodological limitations, including non-standardised protocols, short durations and concomitant treatment with medicine. Pharmacokinetic studies confirmed that CBD's bioavailability is variable, influenced by delivery matrix and food intake. Its ability to cross the placenta and accumulate systemically raises further safety concerns. Animal studies revealed consistent liver toxicity, with liver weight and histopathological changes emerging as sensitive endpoints. Human trials indicated hepatotoxic potential, particularly when CBD is used in combination with other medications. Gastrointestinal effects were reported at higher doses, while neurological and psychiatric safety data remain insufficient. Animal studies on reproductive toxicity reinforced the concern regarding this endpoint. Neurodevelopmental effects following prenatal exposure were observed, suggesting long-lasting, sex-specific outcomes. Endocrine disruptions were noted, including altered thyroid hormone levels and adrenal histopathology. No studies addressed immunotoxicity, though CBD's interaction with immune pathways warrants caution. The Panel performed benchmark dose modelling based on GLP-compliant subchronic studies to identify a toxicological reference point. By applying an uncertainty factor of 400, a provisional safe dose of 0.0275 mg/kg bw per day (approximately 2 mg/day for a 70 kg adult) was derived. This provisional safe dose applies solely to food supplement formulations with CBD purity ≥ 98%, without nanoparticles, for which the production process is considered safe and genotoxicity is ruled out. The Panel concludes that, based on all available data, the safety of CBD for individuals under 25 years of age, pregnant or lactating women, and those on concurrent medications, cannot be established

Bathymetry and lakebed characterization of Bracciano lake (Lazio region, central Italy)

    No full text
Bracciano is a volcanic lake located in central Italy, close to Rome, serving as the primary source of drinking water for the city. It is included in the Bracciano-Martignano regional natural park and is susceptible to the impact of various human activities that interact with its lakebed morphology. The latest bathymetric chart of the lakebed was published in 1969 and showed the overall morphology of the bottom with 5 m spaced isobaths. This paper presents an original morpho-bathymetric dataset, acquired by means of multibeam echosounders, within the Italian Geological Mapping Project at a 1:50,000 scale (CARG project). The new mapping of the Bracciano lakebed allowed the identification with extreme detail of two orders of submerged terraces, channels and landslides, and several pockmarks often associated with rising fluids. Moreover, a distribution map of lakebed sediment was produced by merging the geophysical dataset with ground-truth data

Quality assessment of 3D reconstructed meshes: Bridging objective metrics, subjective perception, and behavioral cues

    No full text
Assessing the quality of 3D reconstructed models remains a key challenge in multimedia applications, especially in the context of cultural heritage, where visual fidelity and perceptual realism are equally crucial. This study investigates how reconstruction parameters, as well as existing objective quality metrics, align with human perception. In addition, we analyze how perceived quality and user interaction are related. A dataset of 3D models was generated by varying the number of input images, mesh complexity, and texture resolution. Results from a subjective study show that texture resolution significantly affects perceived quality, whereas variations in number of images and mesh complexity have a limited impact. Furthermore, interaction behavior was found to vary with perceived quality, with participants spending more time and exploring larger viewing angles for models receiving higher scores. These findings highlight the need for perceptually grounded, interaction-aware evaluation methodologies and provide guidelines for future perceptual optimization of 3D reconstruction pipelines
