Evolutionary Dinamics of Bluetongue Virus Strains circulating in Italy, 2024-2025

    No full text
In 2024, Italy experienced a major resurgence of Bluetongue (BT), a viral disease of ruminants, caused by Bluetongue virus (BTV), an RNA virus circulating in multiple serotypes transmitted by Culicoides midges. By April 2025, over 7,000 confirmed cases were reported, mainly involving BTV-3, BTV-4, and BTV-8. We analyzed the full genomes of BTV strains collected from different Italian regions in 2024 through WGS and phylogenetic analysis. At least three distinct genomic constellations of BTV-3 were identified, two resulting from multiple reassortments involving European strains, and one closely related to the Northern European BTV-3. BTV-4 strains also displayed multiple genomic profiles, with gene segments from different origins. BTV-8 showed high genetic identity (up to 100% in Seg-2) with strains from France, suggesting viral spread through the trade of viremic animals. Notably, BTV-8 genome segments were found within BTV-3 and BTV-4 strains, highlighting the ongoing role of reassortment in shaping BTV evolution. These findings reveal the complex genomic landscape of BTV in Italy and emphasize the importance of WGS in tracking viral dynamics

L'Unione Europea e i singoli Piani Nazionali di Ripresa e Resilienza. Un confronto per i settori economici maggiormente coinvolti

    No full text

    No full text

Necroaccountability , epidemics and symbolic power: A comparison between London and Naples in 1854

    No full text
This study compares the systems of accounts of death operating in London and Naples during the cholera epidemic of 1854. It adopts a translation in space and time of the Bourdieusian concepts of field, capital and habitus and analyses secondary sources as well as primary sources, mainly in the form of medical reports, bulletins, records and healthcare registers retained in the State Archive of Naples and the National Archives in London. The main finding is that the significance of providing an account of death is a function of the distributions and intensity of the symbolic power in the field of forces where it occurs. Moreover, rendering accounts of death reinforces the initial state of equilibrium or disequilibrium within the field. The article contributes to the emerging streams of research into necroaccountability and into natural disasters in the form of epidemics

From Granules to Gels: Exploring physical and technological properties of ball-milled starches from different origins.

    No full text
Aim: Ball milling (BM) is a mechanical technology able to modify technological functionality and structural properties of food biomolecules. Starch is largely used in the food industry but has limited applications in its native state. Physical modifications, such as BM, expand its usability across various sectors. In this study, the effect of BM treatment time on the techno-functional and structural properties of starches from different botanical sources and their transformation into aerogels and cryogels was investigated. Method: Native starches (high amylose corn (HACS), tapioca (TS), potato (PS)) were subjected to BM at varying milling durations (5, 15, 30 and45 min) at a constant rotational speed (350rpm). Analyses of the samples (native and treated) included morphology, thermal properties, gelatinization behavior, water holding capacity (WHC), swelling power (SP), and cold-water solubility (CWS). Hydrogels were prepared using native and BM starches, followed by evaluation of their rheological properties. Aerogels and cryogels were prepared and subsequently characterized for their density (bulk and skeletal) and textural properties (porosity, surface area, pore diameter and volume) and WHC. Results: BM starches exhibited lower temperature and enthalpy of gelatinization than their native counterparts. Techno- functional properties demonstrated a statistically significant correlation with treatment duration (p < 0.05). BM-TS exhibited a three-fold increase in SP, whereas BM-PS showed a substantial rise in CWS (p < 0.05). Treatment of BM- TS for 30 min resulted in a pronounced WHC enhancement. Prolonged milling impacted the granular morphology, leading to the formation of aggregatesAerogels were mesoporous (pore diameter ≤ 25.4 nm), while cryogels exhibited macroporosity (pore diameter ≤ 200 μm). HACS aerogels exhibited a progressive improvement in textural properties, correlating with enhanced porosity and reduced bulk density. BM-HACS aerogels subjected to 30-min treatment achieved the highest surface area (280 m2/g). Conversely, PS showed a decrease in specific surface area and porosity, accompanied by increased bulk density over BM time. The WHC of BM cryogels was twice that of aerogels. Conclusion: This study for the first time produced high-value modified starches used to prepare aerogels and cryogels, highlighting BM as an effective technique for tailoring starch-based materials for food application

Linking Emotions: Affective and Lexical Resources for Italian in Linked Open Data

    No full text
The growing interest in analysing emotions in Italian texts has led to the development of various affective resources, often independently constructed and lacking interoperability. To address this fragmentation, we adopt a Linked Open Data (LOD) approach. This paper presents three main contributions: (1) the release of Sentix 3.0, a revised and enriched polarity lexicon for Italian, together with two derivatives (MAL and WMAL) that address morphological and word frequency variation issues; (2) a new quartile-based methodology to discretize continuous polarity scores; and (3) the linking of Sentix 3. 0 and ELIta, an annotated emotion lexicon with categorical labels, to the LiITA Lemma Bank using standard ontologies (OntoLex-Lemon, MARL) and the newly introduced elita ontology for categorical emotion representation based on Plutchik's Wheel. At the heart of the linking is the word, the central node for aligning different lexical resources
