The Croatian Question in the Political Language of British Liberals (1908-1920)
brojne izazove unutrašnje i vanjske politike Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva toga doba. This thesis attempts to outline the most relevant commonplaces and rethorical strategies used
in the political languages of the British Liberals in the aforementioned period. Using the
Norman Fairclough's threedimensional framework, this work initially examines political and
discursive practices and afterwards it introduces the analysis of the discourse itself. In that
respect, the discourse is presented by four most relevant commonplaces: „Subject/Oppressed
nationality“, „Guardians of the Gate“, „Drang nach Osten“ and „Integral victory“.
Simultaneously, each of the commonplaces is attached to the several rethorical strategies
which are used to legitimise it but which also reveal the stances, assumptions and goals that
British Liberals had while arguing for the Yugoslav unification and the Croatian position
within the new state.
Finally, following the language analysis, the author argues that there are considerable
discrepancies and problems in the relationship between the discourse (production) and the
political practice of the same historical actors. The 3 key problems outlined in that context are
the secret diplomacy, the critique of German imperalism whilst non-reflecting on the British
and the engagement regarding the Croatian Question during the unification and peace
settlement. The overall conclusion of this thesis is that the language of British Liberals in that
period reveals that they were consciously producing a discourse about the urgent and ethical
need for Britain to help the realisation of Yugoslav unification. In doing so, they established
imperial authority by monopolising knowledge production on the peoples and lands relevant
for their interests combining it with the discourse about Britain's role in the history of the
world
Who are we? The use of plural personal pronouns in the Love section of Cosmopolitan
Various formal and informal, fictional and non-fictional discourses within society provide people with different representations of love and romantic relationships. This thesis investigates how the US edition of Cosmopolitan, as the most popular and influential women’s magazine, represents love and relationships in recurring texts on this subject. More specifically, two recurring pieces, Manthropology and Ask Him Anything, appearing in all issues from January 2015 to December 2017, are analysed according to how plural personal pronouns are used in them. Through the analysis of the use of plural personal pronouns, I look into whether relationships are portrayed as interpersonal or intergroup interactions, if the focus is on community and cooperation between two individuals in a relationship or on misunderstanding between two individuals as members of different gender groups with different and potentially conflicting worldview and values. Both Manthropology and Ask Him Anything put the emphasis on the male perspective and its difference from the female perspective already in their titles, and as parts of the section on love and relationship these titles imply that the difference is relevant in romantic relationships. However, the analysis of how these two pieces use plural personal pronouns shows different, layered, and at times conflicting representations of relationships with respect to how important the community between partners in a relationship is and how important the community of each partner with the members of his or her gender is. While pronouns in the texts within Manthropology do indeed shape men as a uniform group with a strong sense of identity and community, a parallel notion of community is absent from the representation of women. On the other hand, although the author of the advice column Ask Him Anything is presented as providing the male perspective, his answers to the readers’ problems rarely represent them as arising from different values between men and women, and the pronouns are not used to establish different and divided gender communities and identities. Despite that, the framing discourse, present in the titles and mostly confirmed in the texts within Manthropology, is the first one the reader encounters. It represents relationships as highly intergroup relationships with misunderstanding between different gender identities as its relevant aspect, and the wide reach of the magazine indicates that these kinds of representations are significant and that they either influence or reflect the opinion of millions of Americans that keep buying the magazine
Exemplary U.S. Ethnic Bildungsromane in the Era of High Multiculturalism
In this graduation thesis I explore how members of marginalized groups form their identity and integrate into the mainstream society. This is done by comparing the classical European Bildungsroman as defined by Franco Moretti, with the Bildungsroman written by ethnic authors in the era of high multiculturalism in the United States. The novels chosen for the analysis are The House on Mango Street (1984) by Sandra Cisneros, Breath, Eyes, Memory (1994) by Edwidge Danticat, The Kite Runner (2003) by Khaled Hosseini and American Dervish (2012) by Ayad Akhtar. The protagonists of the chosen novels all belong to different minority groups.
I offer a brief summary of the origins and features of the Bildungsroman and a brief history of the development of multiculturalism around the world with a focus on its development in the United States and how the Civil Rights movement and the change in the composition of the US population contributed to the move from the notion of the melting pot to that of multiculturalism. The question of multiculturalism’s validity at the present time has been briefly explored as well. Based on Christopher Douglas’s book A Genealogy of Literary Multiculturalism the development of literary multiculturalism has also been explained. Douglas partitions literary multiculturalism into three phases and we are interested in the third phase, i.e. the period from 1965 onwards, because at that time there is an increase in multicultural literary work and revisions of traditional genres, including the Bildungsroman.
In the analysis I study how the protagonists reach maturity and thus form their identity by finding a balance between the expectations of the immigrant community and the mainstream society. Furthermore, we see how the tension between the ethnic and the national is aggravated by discrimination and alleviated by education. In the analysis we also see in what ways the classical Bildungsroman and the ethnic multicultural Bildungsroman differ

The Comics of Dalibor Talajić
Renaissance Theater and Scenography in dramas in Dubrovnik : project teaching proposal
renesansnog kazališnog djelovanja u Dubrovniku predstavlja Marin Držić, poznavatelj talijanskih kazališnih oblika, izvedbi i Serlijevih opisa scenografskih prostora. This graduate thesis is a concise summary of development of the renaissance theatre in Italy with an emphasis on the first immobile theatre buildings, Palladio's Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza and Scamozzi's Teatro all'antica in Sabbioneta, and the first scenographic projects of renaissance artists inspired by the evolution of perspective painting. Italian influence on the development of the renaissance theatre model, based on antique treaties and Vitruvius as an
authority, manifested itself in Dubrovnik. The center of renaissance theatre in Dubrovnik is Marin Držić, connoisseur of italian theatrical forms, performance and Serlio's descriptions of scenographic spaces. In the absence of the more extensive examination of theatre development
in Croatia and its italian influence in high school programs, and also of the lack of preserved croatian renaissance scenographies, the idea of a high school project was created. This paper introduces the proposal for a teaching project of Visual Arts called Držić's arkiteti which would familiarize the students with the stage design process, introduce them to renaissance architectural and decorative elements and enable them to collaborate in shaping Držić's dramatic spaces into their own scenographies
Listening and Speaking Anxiety in Croatian EFL Learners
This thesis investigates language anxiety in Croatian learners of English as a foreign language. Language anxiety is considered to be a complex phenomenon specific to the language learning context and has thus been extensively researched over the last few decades. The purpose of this study was to investigate levels of listening and speaking anxiety in undergraduate and graduate non-English majors at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. More specifically, the purpose was to examine the relationship between language anxiety and the independent variables of self-perception of proficiency and competence, and length of study. The quantitative analyses presented in this thesis have led to interesting conclusions, with the results indicating that Croatian non-English majors exhibit low levels of listening anxiety and moderate levels of speaking anxiety in foreign language learning. In addition, a statistically significant negative correlation was discovered between language anxiety and almost all independent variables
