Flak attrition analysis, monograph: comparative analysis of attrition to flak experienced during the attacks on Vienna of 7 and 8 February 1945.

    No full text
On two consecutive days, 7 and 8 February 1945, the Fifteenth Air Force attacked in strength very heavily defended targets in the Vienna Area. Targets attacked on 7 February were the oil refineries of Moosbierbaum, Florisdorf, Lobau, Schwechat, and the airdrome at Zwolfaxing. On 8 February, when almost all bombing was accomplished by non-visual methods, the target attacked was the vast rail communications and storage complex situated in the southern portion of Vienna. The PFF aiming point for the attack was the marshalling yard situated at the northwest corner of the Vienna South Ordnance Depot. On 7 February 1945, 25 bombers were lost or rendered missing to flak and unknown causes. No bombers were lost or rendered missing to flak or unknown causes on 8 February. Because the targets attacked in the course of the two days operations were situated in the same flak-defended area, and because the attrition to flak experienced on the two days was at wide variance, an analysis was made of the two operations in an attempt to ascertain what factors determined the efficiency of the ground fire delivered by the enemy on these two occasions. Every effort has been made to consider all factors which affect the vulnerability of a formation to flak, but in any such survey one or two major and many minor factors will remain unknown
