1st Infantry Division (Forward), Desert Shield/Storm after action report: VII Corps debarkation and onward movement.

    No full text
This report provides a history and assessment of the debarkation and onward movement phase of the VII Corps deployment to Saudi Arabia. To aid future operations, it seeks to identify the tasks and subtasks which had to be accomplished, why events happened the way they did, and the lessons learned. This overview of the deployment has a broader relevance than would normally be the case with an after action review by a brigade-size unit. The lessons recorded here are focused on the overall conduct of this phase of the VII Corps deployment, and have implications for doctrine, training, organization, materiel, and leadership training for major unit deployments. Contents: shaping the deployment; airflow and seaflow; command and control; port operations; reception of soldiers: billeting, life support and services; ground transportation management; force protection; safety; and training support. Annex A: data. Annex B: lessons learned

Technical memorandum, notes on infantry tactics in Korea. ORO-T-7 (EUSAK).

    No full text
The subject memorandum contains interesting authoritative observations on our operations immediately following our withdrawal from the Yalu and North Korea, December 1950-February 1951. It will be recalled that this was a period of unusual conditions and confused situations. Our understrength and overextended units, while in pursuit of North Korean remnants, were unexpectedly faced with the intervention of Chinese Communist Forces. The memorandum contains combat lessons and source material which may be directly applied to training. Selected actions illustrate the necessity for protection of lines of communication and routes of withdrawal; the advantages to be derived from close coordination of infantry-armor task force organization; the CCF pattern of movement, use of marching fire, and emphasis on grenades; the discussion of the illuminated front as a useful adjunct to training material; and throughout the report there is evident the lack of adequate security measures. Document headings: Chinese Communist Forces in the attack (two parts); notes on Chinese company tactics; CCF tactics in an envelopment of a column; armor and infantry; group critique of Company E 27th Regiment; and development of the illuminated front and of tactics to counter infiltration. Appendixes: artificial moonlight, artillery shell, mortar shell, the rifle grenade, lightning bug, illumination in outposting, defensive entanglements, and improvisations, notes on materiel
