No full textThe photo was taken shortly after the construction of the building on the 300-400 blocks of South Tenth Street, which opened on January 16, 1931. It was the first high school for Wilmington's black citizens. On May 6, 1936, a fire originating in the trash chute on the second floor destroyed the relatively new building. A replacement structure was dedicated on May 24, 1938

No full textDuring her eight day stay, over 42,000 children and adults from all over North Carolina visited the famous ship. The three-masted frigate was commissioned in 1798 and participated in the War with Tripoli in 1803-1804. She was also a veteran of the War of 1812. The ship was immortalized in the poem, "Old Ironsides," by Oliver Wendell Homes and is on permanent exhibition at the Boston Navy Yard
