    Photograph of Mrs. Fowler's class, probably 1st grade, at Lake Forest School, Wilmington, NC. Construction began on Lake Forest School, 1805 S. 13th Street, in 1942. It was built as a grammar school to hold grades one through seven, originally intended to hold the children of war workers and Army personnel living in the three war housing projects in the southern area of the city. It was closed to students in 1988, and used for central offices for the school administration and as a learning center. Currently it is the Mosley Performance Learning Center for children with learning difficulties

    Sonny Jurgensen as a senior in the New Hanover High School 1953 yearbook. Christian Adolph "Sonny" Jurgensen III (1934- ) was born in Wilmington, NC. He started in three sports during his time at New Hanover High School. He averaged at least 12 points a game in basketball, helping the team to the state finals, and also played baseball. However, it was in football that he excelled at quarterback, leading the Wildcats to win the 1951-52 AAA Championships. While playing at Duke University, the team won two ACC football titles, and went to the Orange Bowl. He was selected in the fourth round of the 1957 draft, and played his professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins, where he set numerous records and won the passing title for three years. He was named All-Pro five times, and picked for six Pro Bowls. In 1983 he was picked to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and in 1972 the NC Sports Hall of Fame. Sonny Jurgensen has a star on the Wilmington Walk of Fame as well, added in 2004

She rode on a resort float in the 1952 North Carollina Azalea Festival parade. She lived in Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington, NC

    Head shot used in "Life Around Wilmington", a local magazine. C. E. "Gene" Spivey was born in Whiteville, NC, and moved to Wilmington before joining the U. S. Army in 1943. He earned a Bronze Medal during his WWII service. He started as an assistant manager at the Jiffy Grill on North Front St, and worked his way up to co-owner. He was the vice-president of the New Hanover Restaurant Association of Quality Restaurants , and in 1951 he was the Individual Tourney Champion of the City Commercial Duck Pin Bowling league

    Williston High School

    Begun in 1865 by the Freedman's Bureau as an elementary school for blacks; then operated by the American Missionary Association and named for Massachusettes benefactor Samuel Williston. It became the city's first public school for blacks when purchased in 1873 by the Board of Education. Vocational curriculum added in 1915 when a larger school was constructed on this site . A new high school was built in 1931 burned five years later. The 1938 replacement school was designed by architect Leslie N. Boney and built by contractor U.A. Underwood. That building became Gregory Elementary when the modern high school was construted here in 1953. Williston, the premier secondary educational institution for blacks ceased to function as a high school in 1969, a result of desegregation

    Magazine cover for Life Around Wilmington, featuring Betty Loughlin. Life Around Wilmington was an information /shopping guide to the Wilmington, NC area published in the 1950s. In the spring of 1953, Betty Loughlin had her engagement pictures taken at Belk Beery and the magazine asked to use her photo on their February cover. She was 21 years old at the time and employed at Atlantic Coast Line. Betty Loughlin (1931- ) is a graduate of New Hanover High School and East Carolina University. The Belk Beery department store where this photo was taken is now the New Hanover County Public Library Main branch
