    Children participating in a summer tutorial program sponsored by St. Luke's A.M.E. Zion Church in 1970. St. Luke's A.M.E. Zion Church was started in 1865 as the first African Methodist Episcopal church in Wilmington, NC. Originally called Christian Chapel, the name was changed to St Luke's in 1878. Wilmington-born Chicago Opera star Caterina Jarboro performed benefit concerts for the church at Thalian Hall in the early 1930s. The church was very involved in the civil rights movement in Wilmington in the 1960s

Henry Whitted worked as a delivery man in Wilmington before moving to Philadelphia, PA. James Whitted was a member of the Board of Trustees at both Community Hospital and New Hanover Hospital
