    Photograph of the last crew of the Northwind at the Wilmington, NC port in 1989. The United States Coast Guard Cutter, Northwind, was one of the nation's largest ocean-going icebreakers at the time and a veteran of many missions to the polar region. The 269 ft. cutter was in service for 32 years and based out of the Wilmington port for many years. The crew provided scientific and support services to naval forces in the arctic and Antarctic regions as well as performed escort and data collection services for the National Science Foundation and the government of New Zealand. Due to major budget cuts, the Northwind was decommissioned in January of 1989

    Newspaper photograph of Walter "Skeets" Winner, Jr. sitting in the captain's chair aboard the "Winner Cruise Queen." Walter "Skeets" Winner, Jr. (1970- ) was born in Wilmington, NC. He graduated from John T. Hoggard High School in 1988, and went on to Cape Fear Community College. He earned his 100-ton boating license at the age of 19. The Winner family is a 4th generation family of sea captains dating back to 1885. They have run charter fishing and cruise boats out of Carolina Beach for many years, starting with Carl Winner, who was the first captain to carry fishing charters out of Carolina Beach

    Congregation formed in 1883 under the leadership of the Rev. L.T. Christmas who raised the funds to erect this building five years later. Much of the construction work was done by church members. It is the oldest African-American Baptist church building in the city. The bell tower, damaged by Hurricane Hazel, was removed in 1954

    The Kadala children in the front yard of their home in the Bayshore/Ogden area of New Hanover County, NC. This was an unusually heavy snowfall for Wilmington. From left to right: Neil Kadala (1986- ), Annie Kadala (1984- ), and Susan Kadala (1982-2012). The Kadala family lived for several years in the Netherlands before moving to Wilmington, NC. Subsequently, when the area had the unusual snowstorm of 1989, they were one of the few families in their neighborhood that had appropriate cold-weather clothing for their children

Hickman (1981- ) is a native of Wilmington. She graduated from New Hanover High School in 1999. The Wilmington Civic Ballet was the only non-profit ballet company in the area. It operated from 1975 through 1990, and originally grew out of the Wilmington Parks and Recreation Department
