    Aeroacoustic study of a wavy stator leading edge in a realistic fan/OGV stage

    The effect of sinusoidal serrations applied to the leading-edge of the vanes of a realistic fan stage is investigated using high-fidelity numerical simulations. The CFD solver PowerFLOW based on a hybrid lattice-Boltzmann/very-large-eddy-simulation model is used to compute the unsteady flow and radiated noise of the 22-in source diagnostic test fan rig of the NASA Glenn Research Center. A computational model validated for three different geometries of the outlet guide vanes with straight leading edge is used. A subset of validation results is reported to prove the capability of the solver to accurately predict the influence of the stator geometry on the far-field noise. Different sinusoidal leading edge serrations are investigated for a radial and a swept stator and the same rotor and operating conditions. The influence of the serrations on the acoustic far-field and noise power level is reported in relation to the statistical properties of the velocity fluctuations in the wake of the rotor.     Valoración del índice de alimentación saludable en trabajadores de la salud de una unidad de primer nivel de atención en San Luis Potosí

    La obesidad es un problema de salud pública mundial que, a pesar de los esfuerzos internacionales, no se ha podido contener. Un eje importante, mas no suficiente, para causar este problema es la calidad de la alimentación. Es por esto por lo que, para su análisis, se ha diseñado el índice de alimentación saludable, instrumento que ya se ha incorporado en las evaluaciones regulares en población de Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. OBJETIVO GENERAL: Identificar el valor promedio del índice de alimentación saludable en trabajadores de la salud de la unidad de Medicina Familiar No. 47, del IMSS, San Luis Potosí. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Estudio descriptivo, observacional, transversal, prospectivo y prolectivo. El tamaño de muestra se calculó con un nivel de confianza al 95% y un poder del 80%, y una media conocida de 70±10 en la puntuación del Índice de Alimentación, obteniendo un mínimo de sujetos a incorporar de 105. Previa firma de consentimiento informado, se le pedirá al sujeto que responda algunas preguntas breves para su caracterización sociodemográfica. Posteriormente se le tomarán 3 mediciones antropométricas, peso, talla y circunferencia abdominal. Para realizar las mediciones anteriores se utilizará una báscula clínica con estadímetro y una cinta métrica de fibra de vidrio. Finalmente, se le aplicará el Índice de Alimentación Saludable. RESULTADOS: Se estudió un total de 105 individuos, la mayoría del sexo femenino (61%). El 44.7% de la población tuvo sobrepeso y el 32.3% obesidad. El grupo alimenticio consumido son mayor frecuencia fue el de cereales seguido de verduras y lácteos. El índice de alimentación saludable arrojó un 61% de sujetos con una dieta poco saludable y un 31% con necesidad de cambios. El índice de alimentación estuvo correlacionado estadísticamente con el IMC y con la circunferencia de cintura. CONCLUSIONES: El índice de alimentación saludable en el personal de salud, que en este estudio se observó con un nivel bajo en su mayoría, es crucial para garantizar la salud y el bienestar tanto del personal como de sus pacientesInvestigadoresEstudiante

    En este articulo investigamos las transferencias de voto hacia el psoe que tuvieron lugar durante la campaña de las elecciones generales de 1993. nuestro objetivo de estudio es el grupo de votantes que antes de la campaña no manifestaron tener intencion de votar hacia el psoe pero que acabaron decidiendose por este partido. ese grupo fue crucial en la inesperada victoria final de los socialistas. mediante una encuesta de panel analizamos las caracteristicas de estos electores, sobre todo en relacion a los votantes no socialistas y, en menor medida, frente a los socialistas convencidos. el perfil del grupo es el de personas de izquierda, que valoran muy positivamente la figura de felipe gonzalez (especialmente tras la celebracion de los debates televisivos entre los dos principales candidatos), cuya pareja o persona con la que mas trato tienen son votantes del psoe pero que, sin embargo, estan descontentas con la gestion del gobierno socialista

    While not described as such, Martyrs in Mexico is a continuation of the story that author F. LaMond Tullis gave us in Mormons in Mexico, a classic work, first published in 1987, detailing the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico. Martyrs in Mexico, however, has a narrower scope, focusing on one community—San Marcos, Hidalgo—from which would come well-known individuals of the Church in Mexico. Why did Tullis choose San Marcos? The obvious answer is that this community holds an important place in Church lore. San Marcos was the place of one of the Church’s most remembered (though not necessarily among American Saints) martyrdoms: that of Rafael Monroy and Vicente Morales, who were killed by a firing squad of Mexican revolutionaries for, the story goes, refusing to renounce their faith

    Research aim: The aim of this study is to compare the treatment influence on survival rate in pediatric patients suffering from brainstem glioma. This systematic review analyses previous performed studies which compare different treatment strategies which are used nowadays in clinical practice and their outcomes in terms of survival-rate, also analysing the major different types of brainstem gliomas and their outcomes. Objectives: The objective of this systematic review, through comparison of different treatment strategies, evaluates the best option that can be chosen when managing brainstem glioma in children, and the outcomes to be expected from each treatment, with a special remark on the two major types of brainstem gliomas: Low-grade gliomas (LGG) and High-grade gliomas (or diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG)). Methodology: Through the use of major scientific databases (Ovid Medline, Embase, Pubmed) and searching of the needed terms seeking the adequate studies, a quantity of 18 studies have been chosen and compared with each other to obtain a comparison of the treatments used in the management of brainstem glioma. Study participants: The study participants reviewed in this study is 592 excluding participants of systematic reviews. Research results: The comparison of the studies did not find a significant improve in survival between new and conventional treatment techniques. Conclusions: No differences in overall survival differences have been found with the novel therapeutics used for the treatment of brainstem glioma, although diagnostic methods have evolved and new and promising therapeutical options are being evaluated nowadays. Recommendations: Further studies have to be done in the field of pediatric neurooncology regarding this type of tumors since the actual treatment options do not provide a sufficient improvement in terms of survival, mainly focusing on individually-based techniques and focusing in new therapies which can have a potential curative effect of this tumors and providing a remarkable difference in survival of this patients.     MaxEnt’s parameter configuration and small samples: are we paying attention to recommendations? A systematic review

    abstract: Environmental niche modeling (ENM) is commonly used to develop probabilistic maps of species distribution. Among available ENM techniques, MaxEnt has become one of the most popular tools for modeling species distribution, with hundreds of peer-reviewed articles published each year. MaxEnt’s popularity is mainly due to the use of a graphical interface and automatic parameter configuration capabilities. However, recent studies have shown that using the default automatic configuration may not be always appropriate because it can produce non-optimal models; particularly when dealing with a small number of species presence points. Thus, the recommendation is to evaluate the best potential combination of parameters (feature classes and regularization multiplier) to select the most appropriate model. In this work we reviewed 244 articles published between 2013 and 2015 to assess whether researchers are following recommendations to avoid using the default parameter configuration when dealing with small sample sizes, or if they are using MaxEnt as a “black box tool.” Our results show that in only 16% of analyzed articles authors evaluated best feature classes, in 6.9% evaluated best regularization multipliers, and in a meager 3.7% evaluated simultaneously both parameters before producing the definitive distribution model. We analyzed 20 articles to quantify the potential differences in resulting outputs when using software default parameters instead of the alternative best model. Results from our analysis reveal important differences between the use of default parameters and the best model approach, especially in the total area identified as suitable for the assessed species and the specific areas that are identified as suitable by both modelling approaches. These results are worrying, because publications are potentially reporting over-complex or over-simplistic models that can undermine the applicability of their results. Of particular importance are studies used to inform policy making. Therefore, researchers, practitioners, reviewers and editors need to be very judicious when dealing with MaxEnt, particularly when the modelling process is based on small sample sizes.The final version of this article, as published in PeerJ, can be viewed online at: https://peerj.com/articles/3093

    Detective fiction in Cuban society and culture.

    PhDThe object of this thesis is to reach towards an understanding of Cuban society through a study of its detective fiction and more particularly contemporary Cuban society through the novels of the author and critic, Leonardo Padura Fuentes. The method has been to trace the development of Cuban detective writing and to read Padura Fuentes in the light of the work of twentieth century Western European literary critics and philosophers including Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, Terry Eagleton, Roland Barthes, Jean Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault, Jean François Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard in order to gain a better understanding of the social and historical context from which this genre emerged. By concentrating on the literary texts, I have explored readings which lead out into an analysis of the broader philosophical, political and historical issues raised by the Cuban revolution. Since it deals primarily with modes of deviance and notions of legality and justice within the context of the modern state, detective fiction is particularly well suited to this type of investigation. The intention is to show how this is as valid in the Cuban context as it is in advanced capitalist societies where such research has already been carried out with some success. The thesis comprises an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion. The chapters are divided into three sections. Chapters 1 to 3 attempt a broad theoretical, historical and socio-political analysis of the cultural reality within which the Cuban revolutionary detective genre emerged. Chapters 4 to 6 analyse the Cuban detective narrative from its inception in the early part of the twentieth century until the emergence of Leonardo Padura Fuentes as the foremost exponent of the genre in Cuba after 1991. Chapters 7- 10 concentrate upon the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes, offering a reading of his detective tetralogy informed by the preceding discussion. The contribution made by the thesis to knowledge of the subject is to build upon the work of Seymour Menton and Amelia S. Simpson on the development of the Cuban detective novel and to provide analyses of the pre-Revolutionary Cuban detective narrative and the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes for the first time in the English language. The thesis concludes that the study of this popular genre in Cuba is of crucial importance to the scholar who wishes to reach as full an understanding of the social dynamics within that society as possible. In particular, it proves that Cuban detective fiction provides a useful barometer of social change which records the shifts in the Cuban Zeitgeist that have taken place over the past century

The current issue is dedicated to Energy Systems Modelling The editorial for the Energy Systems Modelling issue is provided by Dr Jan Nill at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action. This issue also hosts interviews with: • David Connolly – coordinator of the H2020 project "Head Roadmap Europe" and one of the developers of the EnergyPLAN model; • Marc Oliver Bettzüge – director of the Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne (ewi); Alistair Buckley - co-author of ‘A review of energy systems models in the UK: Prevalent usage and categorisation’; and • Mark O'Malley – director of the International Institute for Energy Systems Integration. Three contributors from the European Commission’s Directorates-General for Climate Action, Energy and Mobility and Transport collaborate on an article on the EU Reference Scenario 2016, one of the European Commission’s key analysis tools used in the context of the Energy Union. We also have a contribution from DG Energy on the METIS energy system model - a research project for the development of energy simulator software with the aim to further support DG ENER’s evidence-based policy-making.     Generation of lossy mode resonances (LMR) using perovskite nanofilms

Published by Institute of Optics and Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.The results presented here show for the first time the experimental demonstration of the fabrication of lossy mode resonance (LMR) devices based on perovskite coatings deposited on planar waveguides. Perovskite thin films have been ob-tained by means of the spin coating technique and their presence was confirmed by ellipsometry, scanning electron mi-croscopy, and X-ray diffraction testing. The LMRs can be generated in a wide wavelength range and the experimental results agree with the theoretical simulations. Overall, this study highlights the potential of perovskite thin films for the development of novel LMR-based devices that can be used for environmental monitoring, industrial sensing, and gas de-tection, among other applications.Peer reviewe
