Psychological Sentiments and Economic Behavior.
This thesis is a contribution to the field of psychology and economics. The two central themes are gift-giving and the effects of rewards. Within these themes, it studies questions like: Why do people donate to charity funds? Why are people sometimes less motivated when they get rewarded for their behavior? Why does the value of a product increase after they have bought it? And why does the market not completely crowd-out gift-giving? Answers to the above and other questions are given by extending economic models with psychological sentiments. The broad message is that taking such sentiments into account often offers insights into why and how institutions should be designed accordingly. Disregarding these effects leads to unintended consequences of incentive schemes.
GTA Groupware task analysis-modelling complexity
The task analysis methods discussed in this presentation stem from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ethnography (as applied for the design of Computer Supported Cooperative Work CSCW), different disciplines that often are considered conflicting approaches when applied to the same design problems. Both approaches have their strength and weakness, and an integration of them does add value to the early stages of design of cooperation technology. In order to develop an integrated method for groupware task analysis (GTA) a conceptual framework is presented that allows a systematic perspective on complex work phenomena. The framework features a triple focus, considering (a) people, (b) work, and (c) the situation. Integrating various task-modeling approaches requires vehicles for making design information explicit, for which an object oriented formalism will be suggested. GTA consists of a method and framework that have been developed during practical design exercises. Examples from some of these cases will illustrate our approach
Corporate Investment under Uncertainty and Competition: A Real Options Approach.
Abstract: Corporate investment opportunities can be represented as a set of (real) options to acquire productive assets. Identification of the optimal exercise strategies for these options plays a crucial role in improving the quality of capital budgeting decisions and, as a consequence, in maximizing shareholders¿ wealth. Structural changes in the economic environment, imperfect product market competition and agency conflicts across different groups of the firm¿s stakeholders make the standard option theory alone often insufficient for analyzing real investment decisions. This thesis combines option theory with non-cooperative game theory to establish some new results concerning the impact of policy uncertainty, product market interactions, and debt financing on the firm¿s optimal investment strategy.
Model Risk Analysis for Risk Management and Option Pricing.
Due to the growing complexity of products in financial markets, market participants rely more and more on quantitative models for trading and risk management decisions. This introduces a fairly new type of risk, namely, model risk. In the first part of this thesis we investigate the quantitative influence of model risk on risk management with a main focus on regulation issues. We present frameworks for measuring model risk and backtesting procedures for evaluating model quality. Furthermore, we apply these frameworks to derivatives portfolios. The second part of the thesis concerns interest rate derivatives pricing models. We compare Libor market and discrete string models and find them observationally equivalent. Furthermore, we investigate the factor dependence and estimation risk for a range of exotic derivatives priced with these models.
The Impact of Blockholders on Information Signalling, Productivity, and Managerial Disciplining.
It has recently been acknowledged that all over the world, large shareholders control important parts of publicly traded companies. This dissertation tries to contribute to the existing literature by exploring particular aspects of large shareholders in market economies as well as transition economies. The first part is devoted to exploring the impact of different types of blockholders on market reaction to directors' dealings (insider trading) in the U.K. The second part analyzes the restructuring activities pushed forward by new private owners in voucher-privatized firms in the Czech republic shortly after the transfer of ownership.
The two-way interaction between the molecules that cause vaginal malodour and lactobacilli:An opportunity for probiotics
Vaginal malodour is a sign of dysbiosis. The biogenic amines (BAs) cadaverine, putrescine and tyramine are known to be causative compounds. Recent reports suggest these compounds produced by pathogens might have a role beyond causing malodour; namely inhibiting the growth of lactobacilli bacteria that are crucial in the maintenance of vaginal homeostasis. The aim of this study was to identify whether certain lactobacilli strains could reduce BAs and to evaluate how Lactobacillus species were affected by these compounds. Using LC–MS and HPLC-UV, five Lactobacillus crispatus strains were identified as being capable of significantly reducing BAs from the media under in vitro conditions. Through 16S rRNA gene sequencing of vaginal swabs exposed to Bas, cadaverine was found to reduce the relative abundance of lactobacilli. When L. crispatus was exposed to media supplemented with BAs with an HCl adjusted lower pH, its growth was enhanced, demonstrating the relevance of the maintenance of an acidic vaginal environment. If strains are to be developed for probiotic application to alleviate bacterial vaginosis and other conditions affecting large numbers of women worldwide, their ability to adapt to Bas and regulate pH should be part of the experimentation.</p
Bioluminescent Intercalating Dyes for Ratiometric Nucleic Acid Detection
Rapid and sensitive DNA detection methods that can be conducted at the point of need may aid in disease diagnosis and monitoring. However, translation of current assays has proven challenging, as they typically require specialized equipment or probe-specific modifications for every new target DNA. Here, we present Luminescent Multivalent Intercalating Dye (LUMID), off-the-shelf bioluminescent sensors consisting of intercalating dyes conjugated to a NanoLuc luciferase, which allow for nonspecific detection of double-stranded DNA through a blue-to-green color change. Through the incorporation of multiple, tandem-arranged dyes separated by positively charged linkers, DNA-binding affinities were improved by over 2 orders of magnitude, detecting nanomolar DNA concentrations with an 8-fold change in green/blue ratio. We show that LUMID is easily combined with loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), enabling sequence-specific detection of viral DNA with attomolar sensitivity and a smartphone-based readout. With LUMID, we have thus developed a tool for simple and sensitive DNA detection that is particularly attractive for point-of-need applications.</p
