Bringing Manufacturing into the MDO domain using MBSE
Most MDO problems currently do not include manufacturing as an optimization domain. Within the H2020 project AGILE 4.0 the intent is to bring manufacturing into the MDO domain using MBSE techniques developed within the project. To demonstrate how manufacturing can be brought into the MDO domain application cases are set up that resemble MDO problems from industry. In this paper, the MDO techniques will be used for the design of a Flap for a regional jet. The manufacturing aspect is represented by including the manufacturing cost of the flap in a Design Of Experiments (DOE). In this DOE different flap kinematic mechanisms and different flap sizes and paths are explored. The DOE is set up using the MDO toolset developed within AGILE 4.0. It allows for an automatic definition of the DOE workflow. The DOE results show that the choice of flap configuration has a significant effect on the Flap manufacturing cost, the flap wright and the landing performance of the aircraft. Next steps will be to investigate more flap configurations, improved the manufacturing cost model used and to set up a true flap optimization.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Flight Performance and PropulsionAerospace Structures & Computational Mechanic

Serum troponin T concentration as a predictor of mortality in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients
BACKGROUND: Troponin T is a good predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in cardiac patients. Although it is known that troponin T is an independent risk factor in dialysis patients as well, its prognostic value when measured routinely in clinical practice, particularly in addition to other risk indicators, is unclear. METHODS: A cohort of 847 patients who started dialysis therapy between 1997 and 2001 and participated in a multicenter follow-up study was examined. Clinical data were determined 3 months after the start of dialysis therapy. Patients were followed up until date of death or censoring in November 2003. RESULTS: For patients with troponin T values of 0.05 to 0.10 microg/L, hazard ratio for all-cause mortality was 2.2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.7 to 2.8) compared with patients with values less than 0.05 microg/L. For patients with values greater than 0.10 microg/L (11%), hazard ratio was 3.3 (95% CI, 2.5 to 4.5). A survival model with clinical and laboratory risk indicators yielded an area under the curve of 0.81, which did not increase when troponin T level was added to the model. The area under the curve for troponin T level alone was 0.67. No important differences were found between patients on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis therapy and between patients with high and low residual renal function. CONCLUSION: Although troponin T level is an independent risk factor for mortality in dialysis patients, it has limited added predictive power as a routine screening test over other clinical risk factors in dialysis patient
Resection of the Portal-Superior Mesenteric Vein in Pancreatic Cancer
OBJECTIVES: The portal vein (PV)-superior mesenteric vein (SMV) margin is the most affected margin in pancreatic cancer. This study investigates the association between venous resection, tumor invasion in the resected PV-SMV, recurrence patterns, and overall survival (OS). METHODS: This multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic cancer (2010-2017). In addition, a systematic literature search was performed. RESULTS: In total, 531 patients were included, of which 149 (28%) underwent venous resection of whom 53% had tumor invasion in the resected PV-SMV. Patients with venous resection had a significant higher rate of R1 margins (69% vs 37%) and had more often multiple R1 margins (43% vs 16%). Patient with venous resection had a significant shorter time to locoregional recurrence and a shorter OS (15 vs 19 months). At multivariable analyses, venous resection and tumor invasion in the resected PV-SMV were not predictive for time to recurrence and OS. The literature overview showed that pathological assessment of the resected PV-SMV is not adequately standardized. CONCLUSIONS: Only half of patients with venous resection had pathology confirmed tumor invasion in the resected PV-SMV, and both are not independently associated with time to recurrence and OS. The pathological assessment of the resected PV-SMV needs to be standardized
The Relationship Between Corporate Governance Practices and Financial Performance in New Zealand: An Empirical Investigation
Corporate Governance is the set of structures and behaviours by which a company or other business entity is directed and managed (New Zealand Securities Commission, 2003). The structures and behaviours guide how the entity sets objectives, develops strategies and business plans, monitors and reports on performance, and manages risks. They also guide how directors and managers meet all expectations and that they are responsible and accountable in their respective roles. In 2004 the New Zealand Securities Commission (NZSC) adopted a principle-based corporate governance approach which was intended to contribute to high standards of corporate governance in New Zealand entities. The principles/guidelines are broad statement generally applied to the governance of entities that have economic impact in New Zealand or are accountable, in various ways, to the public. The economic entities are required to observe the principles/guidelines to the fullest extent that they reasonably can and depart only where they are subject to competing statutory or public policy requirements (NZSC, 2004). This thesis investigates the effect principle-based corporate governance practices have on the financial performance of publicly listed companies and public corporate entities in New Zealand. The adoption of the principle-based approach was to encourage entities to develop governance structures that are specific to their context. Therefore, this research examines: (i) whether the NZSC recommendations have encouraged institutions to develop entity and/or industry specific governance structures; and (ii) whether the differences in governance practices at entity and industry level contribute to the differences in the financial performance. Prior studies have examined governance practices of larger corporations in large economies. The governance practices of companies in smaller economies have received little attention. This research extends the understanding of responses to smaller entities, both private and public sector, in a small open economy with a mature capital market. The focus of this thesis is on the governance variables that have been highlighted by the NZSC in 2004 and also other governance variables that are supported in the literature as providing an appropriate structure for the institutions in the environment in which it operates. Data for the small and large capitalisation (cap) companies were obtained from the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) Deep Archive. The data for the small cap companies covered the period 1999 to 2006 and for large cap companies the sampling period was from 1999 to 2007. For public sector corporate entities, data were obtained from their respective annual reports for the period 2000 to 2007. Pooled data were analysed using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and two stages least squares (2SLS) regression techniques to evaluate: (i) whether entities have complied with the NZSC recommendations; (ii) whether those entities that were continuously compliant with the NZSC recommendations have superior financial performance; (iii) the entities’ financial performance post-NZSC recommendations is better than pre-NZSC recommendations; and (iv) the difference in governance practices in different entities and industries and the effect they have on company financial performance. The findings indicate that small cap and large cap companies and public sector corporate entities have universally adopted the Securities Commission recommendations. Results for the large cap companies show that compliance with NZSC recommendations had a positive effect on financial performance, but empirical results show that compliance with NZSC recommendations has had a negative effect on the financial performance of small cap companies and public sector corporate entities. There is also evidence that governance practices in certain industries have contributed towards the differences in entities’ financial performance. This suggests that a principle-based governance approach led to the development of industry-specific governance structures in large cap companies and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) as intended. However, the evidence for the small cap companies is specific to the finance/investment sector. As a result of this study, the relationship between ‘soft regulations’ and entities’ financial performance is better understood, and in terms of public/regulatory requirements, the issues associated with compliance cost burdens are better informed. This study offers insights for policy makers around the world who have adopted principle-based approaches and to those jurisdictions that are interested in adopting similar governance approaches in the future
A Discourse Analytical study that explores the discursive constructions of therapeutic practice within educational psychology
This Discourse Analytical (DA) study explores the discursive
constructions of therapeutic practice within educational psychology. These constructions are taken from the perspective of fifteen Educational Psychologists (EPs) who are new to the profession. Drawing on data from four focus groups, comprising of three to four participants, I used Discursive Psychology (DP) to analyse the psychological themes emerging from participant talk.
My analysis indicated that five interpretative repertoires were used to talk about therapeutic EP work. These included: ‘therapeutic-asskilled’,‘therapeutic-as-eclectic’, ‘therapeutic-as-threatening’,‘therapeutic-as-limited’ and ‘therapeutic-as-emerging’. A number of discursive devices such as disclaiming, excusing and blaming were also used. Participants were able to take up varying subject positions in relation to therapeutic practice, presenting themselves as both passive and active agents. When talking about therapeutic work participants positioned themselves as confused, reluctant and unconfident; as well as valuable, skilled and motivated
practitioners.
I concluded that the relational aspects of therapeutic EP practice are as important as the technical aids or tools used to facilitate this type of work. I have suggested that the uncertainty that exists around therapeutic work might reflect the uncertainty of participants’ emerging EP identity. My research indicates that EPs, who are new to profession, have the sufficient agency to negotiate therapeutic practices with educational psychology. However, this will require further investment from leaders within the profession
