Using performance assessment in secondary school mathematics: an empirical study in a Singapore classroom

    No full text
This article reports an exploratory study on using performance assessment in mathematics instruction in a high-performing secondary school in Singapore. An intact mathematics class participated in the study, and received chapter-based performance tasks as intervention during regular mathematics lessons for about one and a half school years. The performance tasks used included authentic and/or open-ended tasks. The students’ academic achievements and attitudes in mathematics were compared with a comparison class that did not receive the intervention. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected, mainly through questionnaire surveys, performance task tests, conventional school exams, and interviews with students and teachers. The results suggest that the students receiving the intervention performed significantly better than their counterparts in solving conventional exam problems, and in general they also showed more positive changes in attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics learning. The students from the experimental class also expressed positive views about the benefits of using performance tasks in promoting their ability in higher order thinking, though no statistically significant difference was detected between the two classes of students in solving unconventional tasks before and after intervention. Overall, the results appear to support teachers’ using contextualised problems in real life situations and open-ended investigations in students’ learning of mathematic

Performance Evaluation of Distributed-Antenna Communications Systems Using Beam-Hopping

    No full text
Digital beamforming (DBF) techniques are capable of improving the performance of communications systems significantly. However, if the transmitted signals are conflicted with strong interference, especially, in the direction of the transmitted beams , these directional jamming signals will severely degrade the system performance. In order to efficiently mitigate the interference of the directional jammers, in this contribution a beam-hopping (BH) communications scheme is proposed. In the proposed BH communications scheme, only one pair of the beams is used for transmission and it hops from one to the next according to an assigned BH pattern. In this contribution a range of expressions in terms of the average SINR performance have been derived, when both the uplink and downlink are considered. The average SINR performance of the proposed BH scheme and that of the conventional single-beam (SB) as well as multiple-beam (MB) assisted beam-processing schemes have been investigated. Our analysis and results show that the proposed BH scheme is capable of efficiently combating the directional jamming, with the aid of utilizing the directional gain of the beams generated by both the transmitter and the receiver. Furthermore, the BH scheme is capable of reducing the intercept probability of the communications. Therefore, the proposed BH scheme is suitable for communications, when several distributed antenna arrays are available around a mobile

JUNCTION CONDITIONS ON NULL HYPERSURFACES FOR SPHERICALLY SYMMETRICAL METRICS

A necessary condition for the junction of two spherically symmetric metrics on a null hypersurface to satisfy Lichnerowicz's condition is derived. It is shown using this necessary condition that the junction of the Schwarzschild metric with the Gonzalez metric can never be c1, and the junction of the Reissner-Nordstrom metric with the metric suggested by Shen and Zhu can never be c1 either.Physics, MathematicalSCI(E)0ARTICLE61537-15403

This bachelor thesis focuses on the novel Notes of a Desolate Man (Huang ren shouji 荒人手記, 2011) by Taiwanese author Zhu Tianwen 朱天文 (born 1956). The thesis will briefly introduce the literary-historical background of the era, including the short biography of the author, her work and literary influences. The core of the bachelor thesis is a detailed motivational-thematic analysis of the novel Notes of a Desolate Man with a focus on homotextuality, ie. literary depiction of homosexual experience. The thesis analyses the motives and strategies that the author used to portray homosexuality and evaluates the extent to which these "notes" of the man-gay narrator are the personal testimony of Zhu Tianwen as a woman in contemporary society and as an author. Keywords: Chu T'ien-wen, Zhu Tianwen, Huangren shouji, Notes of a Desolate Man, Taiwanese literature, Tongzhi wenxue, homosexuality, homotextualityPredmetom tejto bakalárskej práce je román Zápisky rozvráteného muža (Huang ren shouji 荒人手記 , 2011) od taiwanskej autorky Zhu Tianwen 朱天文(nar. 1956). The Dunhuang Manuscript Version of a Synopsis of the Yu zhu jinggang bore jing xuan yan and Its Author

110009359848The present paper investigates a synoptic text, surviving only in Dunhuang manuscript fragments (Stein Nos 8044, 8166, and 9723 衾all part of the same scroll), dealing with the Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan御註金剛般若經宣演, the work of Daoyin 道氤(668-740), a scholar-monk active during the Kaiyuan開元era. My examination of the content and form of the extant fragments leads me to conclude that this must be a synopsis compiled on the basis of the Jingang ying, a commentary to the Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan. We know from Yitianʼs 義天Xin bian zhu zong jiao zang zong lu 新編諸宗教藏總録that a synoptic text called Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan ke 御註金剛般若經宣演科, in two scrolls, was composed by Quanming 詮明, a scholar-monk who lived under the Liao 遼Dynasty. The text, however, has not been indentified so far. My investigation raises the possibility that the author of the above Dunhuang manuscript fragments might be no other than Quanming. These materials thus become very important sources not only for our understanding of the influence exerted by the Yu zhu jingang bore jing xuan yan ke and the Jingang ying on later Chinese Buddhism but also for the study of Quanmingʼs work and thought.departmental bulletin pape

The ceremonial music of ZHU Zaiyu

The Chinese music theorist, composer, mathematician, and scholar ZHU Zaiyu朱載堉 (1536–1611) is well-known in music history as the creator of the mathematical theory of 12-tone equal tuning (equal temperament). The major part of his writings is collected in the Yuelü quanshu《樂律全書》 [Comprehensive treatise on music and music theory] , an encyclopaedic work comprising 14 separate titles, and written over a number of years from before 1581 to 1607. His music theory is mainly presented in Lülü jingyi《律呂精義》 [Precise principles of the musical pitches] (Preface dated 1596), which is the single most important treatise within the Yuelü quanshu, and this topic has been the focus of most studies on Zhu Zaiyu to date. The principal music scores of Zhu Zaiyu constitute another sub-opus within the Yuelü quanshu, whose titles are comprised in the Caoman guyue pu《操縵古樂譜》 [Ancient music with zither figurations] , Xuangong heyue pu《旋宮合樂譜》 [Concerted music / transposable through all 12 pitches] , Xiangyin Shiyue pu《鄉飲詩樂譜》 [Songs of the 《Shijing》 for performance at the Country Banquet] , and Xiaowu xiangyue pu《小舞鄉樂譜》 [Music of the country to accompany the minor dances] . (Due to time constraints, the 4 very interesting songs in Lingxing xiaowu pu《零星小舞譜》 [Choreography for the minor dances at the Lingxing Temple] are not included in the present study.) The musical compositions in these works were written over a period of years dating from not long after 1567. They have lain mutely under the shadow of Zhu Zaiyu’s extraordinary achievements in theory, and have never been fully studied. These musical compositions are the subject of the present dissertation. The research aims to understand the music, to transcribe the scores, and thus help to bring them back to sounding life. The core of the work comprises the music transcriptions of Ch. 7. These aim to come as close to Zhu Zaiyu’s Urtext as a transcription can, and for those scores furnished with instrumentation, they should be sufficiently explicit in all details to be directly performable in a manner as Zhu Zaiyu intended. Ch. 1–6 present supporting studies which help to understand the music in its historical and theoretical contexts, but extensive analysis is not attempted. For orientation, Ch. 1 provides a review of Zhu Zaiyu’s life and musical works. It appends a translation and study of a rather neglected primary document which played a crucial part in Zhu Zaiyu’s life, his 〈Rangguo zhenglun shu讓國正倫疏 [Petition to relinquish the principality and rectify family relationships]〉, most likely written in 1593. Ch. 2 describes the ceremonials of the classic text Yili《儀禮》 [Protocol and ceremonial] for which Zhu Zaiyu composed much of his music. Ch. 3 surveys Zhu Zaiyu’s music notation, and includes a special study of his zither figurations called caoman操縵 . Ch. 4 appraises Zhu Zaiyu’s music tuning, with the immediate purpose of determining the sounding pitch of his huangzhong黄鍾 , and it naturally impinges on facets of his music theory. Ch. 5 and Ch. 6 furnish information and particulars about the instrumentation and orchestration of the compositions transcribed in Ch. 7. An incidental finding uncovered by these investigations is the re-discovery of a fragment of a treatise or essay by Zhu Zaiyu which has long been lost (at least since 1825). It is the Xiantiantu zhengwu《先天圖正誤》 [Correcting errors in the a priori diagram of the 《Yijing》] . I mention this re-discovery in Ch. 1, but time constraints do not permit a fuller discussion. This must await a later study. In more ways than one, the present dissertation is better regarded as a work in progress, than as a finished piece of research.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Woo Shingkwan 胡成

In the collation of The Comment on Yinfu,Mr Wang-Tie interpreted why he used this title but not The Textual Research on Yinfu in the collected edition about Zhu-Zi,he suggested that The Textual Research on Yinfu actually was the book which named The Comment on Yinfu, the true author was Cai-YuanDing,and this book was collated by Zhu-Xi.But after in depth research, this paper considers that the name of The Textual Research on Yinfu actully named The Comment on Yinfu, and the author was not Zhu-Xi,just as what Mr Wang suggested.Nevertheless, being different with Mr Wang, the paper considers this atricle through this book was not wrote by Cai-YuanDing nor collated by Zhu-Xi.福建省社科联规划项目(2008B2063);泉州市社科联规划项目(2008B-YZ05

Ren zhi, shi jian yu ti yan: dui yi zhu zhi zhu yi shi Zhu zi ge wu qiong li de shang que = Understanding, practice and experience : examining the interpretation of Zhu Xi’s “ge wu qiong li” as congnitivism

M.Phil.There has been a prolonged controversy in the interpretation of Zhu Xi’s theory of moral self-cultivation, namely “Ge We Qiong Li” (literally means to investigate numerous things and to fully understand the principles behind them). It can be designated as “cognitivism” if we regard it as a purely cognitive activity. Critics think this is an inappropriate method of moral self-cultivation, i.e. questing morality in an intellectual approach, which on one hand is inconsistent with the Confucian tradition of self-knowing, and on the other hand would cause the problems of seeking morality from the outsides and diminished moral motivation. The undesirable consequence of such a method of self-cultivation is the possibility of failure to practise morality in spite of moral knowledge is acquired. There are different theoretical levels in “cognitivism”, among them include defenses for Zhu Xi. This thesis attempts to clarify the meaning of “cognitivism” in the sense of Confucian moral self-cultivation, and then to evaluate the rationality of interpreting Zhu Xi’s “Ge We Qiong Li” as “cognitivism”. We start by elaborating three levels of “cognitivism”, through reviewing the theories of three representing contemporary scholars, namely Chen Lai, Mou Zong San and Ng Kai Chiu. In the subsequent chapters, corresponding responses are given to these three theories respectively. The gist of the thesis is to argue that Zhu Xi’s “Ge Wu Qiong Li” is not a purely cognitive moral self-cultivation theory which solely asks for conceptual knowledge. It is questionable to base on such an interpretation to disapprove Zhu Xi. Even if a defence for Zhu Xi is painstakingly constructed under the framework of “cognitivism”, it might not tally with his original thoughts. Thus, it is necessary to reconceptualize Zhu Xi’s definition of knowledge. Parallel title from English abstract.Thesis M.Phil. We web-scraped 450000+ comments from New York Times, applied a LDA model to analyze their topic distribution, and manually marked these topics. We then derived a Random Decision Tree Forest of 100 regression trees, with more than 1100 nodes in each tree, in order to infer audience engagement (indicated by comment length) from topic distribution for each comment. The visualization of the tree helped us determine the importance of each topic in terms of how it affects audience's attention.Open Restriction set for Item 110884 on 2019-05-10T18:33:33Z with date null by [email protected] by Emilie Staubs ([email protected]) on 2019-05-10T18:35:08Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Zhu, Junzhe.pdf: 229004 bytes, checksum: 319f58a92f6ed4d8ca41d8cc26f9c2df (MD5) Zhu, Junzhe.pdf: 287700 bytes, checksum: 8f9cb53a8353a7522ea01923c6424667 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2019-05-10T18:35:08Z (GMT).
