Frans Johansson - Author of the bestseller The Medici Effect

    No full text
Frans Johansson is an author, speaker, and entrepreneur. His bestselling book The Medici Effect was selected as one of the top 10 best business books by Amazon.com and named one of the best innovation books of the year by several organizations. It has been translated into 17 languages. The Medici Effect explores the concept of cross-field and cross-cultural combinations and offers clear guidance on how to make such an approach work effectively. Johansson spent three years talking to individuals and teams at the intersection of different disciplines and cultures. He combined the results from those interviews with decades of existing research in psychology, economics, and management of creativity and innovation. Johansson explains that three driving forces—the movement of people, the convergence of scientific disciplines, and the leap in computational power—are increasing the number and types of intersections we can access. From CEOs, derivative traders, scientists, fashion designers, authors, and public health administrators, Johansson shows audiences how to find the intersection and unleash the Medici Effect. Johansson has been living in the intersection most of his life. He was raised in Sweden by his African American and Cherokee mother and Swedish father. Johansson earned his B.S. in environmental science at Brown University and his M.B.A. at Harvard Business School. Johansson founded both a Boston-based software company and a medical device company operating out of Baltimore, Maryland, and Stockholm, Sweden. He has written articles on health care, information technology, and the science of sport fishing. He has been featured on CNN’s AC360, ABC\u27s Early Morning Show, and CNBC’s The Business of Innovation series along with Jack Welch and Muhammad Yunus.https://corescholar.libraries.wright.edu/archives_presidential_lecture_series/1038/thumbnail.jp

Global marketing : foreign entry, local marketing, & global management / Johny K. Johansson.

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references and indexes.xix, 662 pages :Johansson’s Global Marketing, 5/e utilizes a three-pronged framework to organize the discussion of how to conduct global business: Foreign Entry, Local Marketing, and Global Management. Johansson seeks to develop the varied skills a marketing manager needs to be successful in each of these tasks. In foreign entry, in global management, and to a large extent even as a local marketer in a foreign country, the global marketer needs skills that the home makes experience-or the standard marketing text-have rarely taught. The recognition of the three roles helps dispel the notion that “there is no such thing as international global marketing, only marketing. Much of the excellent research and tried-and-true teaching material that global marketers in business and academe have contributed over the years is reflected in the chapters and in several cases that can be found at the end of each major section. The authors have focused on material that is timely and up-to-date, and relevant to the global context

Blind OFDM carrier frequency offset estimation by locating null subcarriers

    No full text
We present a novel algorithm for estimating the Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) in an OFDM receiver. The algorithm is based on locating the spectral minimas within null subcarriers embedded in the spectrum. This is done by using a scaled DFT algorithm to calculate the spectrum of the OFDM symbol around the null subcarrier, followed by averaging the absolute square of the amplitude. The method is suitable for systems with continuous transmission.</p

Knowledge sharing strategies for Project Knowledge Management in the automotive sector

    No full text
Project Knowledge Management is regarded as a field of increasing importance for both researchers and organisations. This led Volvo Technology, the innovation business unit within a Swedish automotive multinational corporation, to explore through a qualitative case study how Project Knowledge Management could be improved to support knowledge sharing between projects within the organisation. The current situation of Project Knowledge Management is described through a developed theoretical framework and with input from thirteen semi-structured interviews conducted and analysed in an iterative fashion. The description shows that the contributor employs the codification strategy to share knowledge with other projects while the receiver adapts a personalisation strategy to retrieve knowledge from other projects. This description was analysed and compared with current research through brainstorming. Since there are current initiatives within the organisation to improve the codification strategy, this research focuses on improving the personalisation strategy. The recommendation was to promote Communities of Practice. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted to evaluate the relevance of the recommendations. The recommendation was found to be relevant for improving Project Knowledge Management within Volvo Technology

Hôtel Pacifique – “the peaceful hotel" : An annoted translation of a contemporary Québécois play

    No full text
This essay is based on my own translation from French to Swedish of parts of the play Hôtel Pacifiqueby the Québécois author Fanny Britt. The purpose of the essay, apart from creating a text performable in its target language context, is to discuss and analyze the specialized nature of translating drama. The essay also aims to provide new perspectives on Québécois French and problems related to translating language varieties. The spoken word is the focal point: i.e. the lines of the drama and the characteristic oral features of Québécois French. Newmark's communicative translation method is used as the main translation principle. The method proves to be compatible with the text type despite certain exceptions. The result was a modern Swedish play with colloquial and idiomatic language. However, in order to determine if the text is performable, the drama must be presented on stage, which is a future goal

Fattighusliv i ensamhetsslott [Elektronisk resurs] : Ivar Lo-Johansson och de äldre i samhällsdebatt och dikt

    No full text
In 1949, a Swedish author, Ivar Lo-Johansson (1901–1990), started an action that had the aim of improving conditions for old people in Sweden This action lasted from 1949 until 1957. It started when the author and a photographer made a journey around the country to enable Lo-Johansson to form a conception of the conditions under which old people lived in old people’s homes. The journey was documented in words and pictures ands gave rise to a series of articles in a magazine, Vi, in the spring of 1949. The articles were followed in the same year by the publication of a book of photographs, Ålderdom (Old Age), and of four talks which Lo-Johansson broadcast on the radio during the autumn. In 1952 the author published a polemical pamphlet, Ålderdoms-Sverige (Old Age in Sweden), which contained fierce attacks on the social authorities for the lack of proper care that Lo-Johansson considered that the old people were subjected to. In the book the author proposed a number of measures to improve the situation of the elderly. Among other things he emphasised the importance of giving the elderly a meaningful existence and treating them in such a way that their mental health was not threatened. Lo-Johansson’s principal goal was that institutions to care for healthy old people should not be needed in the future – his slogan was that care at home should replace care in homes. This dissertation describes how Lo-Johansson’s campaign for better care for the elderly was implemented, the reactions that followed, and the ways in which his proposals for improvements in care for the elderly were put into practice. Another task in this study has been to attempt to define some of the care structures that governed attitudes towards the elderly at the end of the 1940s and to see the extent to which they were changed in the 1950s as a consequence of Lo-Johansson’s action. The conclusions of the dissertation are, in brief, that the author’s action resulted in a new focus in the social policy and a change in the structure of values in which concepts such as human dignity, integrity, humanity and the satisfaction of mental needs have obtained a footing in both the social policy debate and in the practical exercise of new forms of care for the elderly at that time.</p

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent channel flow using the explicit algebraic subgrid-scale model

    No full text
Large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent channel flow are performed with a new subgrid-scale (SGS) stress model. The simulations show that with this model we can well predict turbulent wall flows at coarse resolutions and moderately high Reynolds numbers. The commonly used dynamic Smagorinsky model fails at coarser resolutions

Explicit algebraic and differential Reynolds stress model application to homogeneously sheared and compressed turbulence

    No full text
An explicit algebraic and differential Reynolds stress models (EARSM and DRSM) are used to investigate the influence of homogeneous shear and compression on the behaviour of turbulence in the limit of rapid distortion theory (RDT). EARSM is shown to give realizable results and to preserve RDT regime, unlike the eddy-viscosity model (EVM). The DRSM version of our model is in reasonable agreement with RDT theory
