    In 1931 Mona arrived on the Ghan to be the first barmaid in Alice Springs, she worked at the Stuart Arms Hotel at the time her sister Eileen and brother-in-law Joe Kilgariff were leasing the Hotel. After working there for ten years Mona walked out and set up business in a general store named Centralian Traders Store and then Mona opened a frock shop. During the war years Mona kept her store going before eventually selling her business, Mona brought a block of land fronting Todd Street and Wills and Leichhardt terraces which became the site of the Riverside Hotel, now the Todd Tavern. Mona was in her seventies before she married long-time partner Ron Haines they sold the Riverside Hotel in 1973 and moved to Adelaide, but within in two years they were back in Alice Springs. She was well known and respected in football circles, donating the Minahan Medal for Central Australian Football League's (CAFL) best and fairest winner each year.     In this episode, we are talking to Mona Sloane, a New York University (NYU) based sociologist working on design and inequality, specifically in the context of AI design and policy. Mona talks with us about her many struggles and her engagement as a feminist tech researcher and activist who strives for more justice in the digital world. One of her many projects is the Terra Incognita NYC project, an investigation of New York City’s digital public spaces in the pandemic, a project that showed the escalated impact of well-known issues that exist within digital space—such as the digital divide, harassment, disproportionately impacted communities. In 2020, Mona was added to the “100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics Hall of Fame”. Mona is a Senior Research Scientist at the NYU Center for Responsible AI, and an Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, as well as a Fellow with NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge (IPK)

    In her analysis of Martin’s paintings from 1977-1999, Hakim highlights the numerous ruptures and linkages marked by irony, sarcasm and anxiety. Formal aspects of Martin’s pictorial landscapes are considered in relation to his use of figurative elements and kitsch objects. Hakim also discusses the artist’s architectural constructions from the early 1990s (based on the theme of suburbia) and recent works concerned with the language of modernist painting.
