An Atomistic View to the Gas Phase Proteome
SummaryExtended all-atom molecular dynamics simulations on all protein metafolds have been performed to obtain a complete picture of the gas phase proteome. The structural atlas of the gas phase proteome obtained here shows an unexpected maintenance of the global and local structure and of the general deformability pattern upon transfer to the gas phase under electrospray conditions. Despite a general compression, the solution structure can be easily very well recognized from the gas phase one, and most structural details, such as secondary structure, are well preserved upon vaporization. Rehydration of the gas phase protein leads in most cases to a very fast transition from gas phase to solution structure. Overall, our massive analysis (over 4 μs in solution and over 12 μs in the gas phase) demonstrates that solution-like structures can be determined by using mass spectroscopy and related techniques to obtain fast approximations to the solution structure

The political phenomenology of war reporting
Drawing on interviews with war correspondents, editors, political and military personnel, this article investigates the political dimension of the structuration and structuring effects of the reporter’s experience of journalism. Self-reflection and judgements about colleagues confirm that there are dominant norms for interpreting and acting in conflict scenarios which, while contingent upon socio-historical context, are interpreted as natural. But the prevalence of such codes masks the systematically misrecognized symbolic systems of mystification and ambivalence – systems which reproduce hierarchies and gatekeeping structures in the field, but which are either experienced as unremarkable, dismissed with irony and cynicism, or not present to the consciousness of the war correspondent. The article builds on recent theories of journalistic disposition, ideology, discourse and professionalism, and describes the political dimension of journalistic practice perceived in the field as apolitical. It addresses the gendering of war correspondence, the rise of the journalist as moral authority, and questions the extent to which respondent reflections can be defensibly analytically determined
Alternative Policies and Sea-Level Rise in the RICE-2009 Model
The present study extends earlier research by presenting the results of a new and updated version of the RICE model (Regional Integrated model of Climate and the Economy), labeled the RICE-2009 model. The model is a regionalized, dynamic model that incorporates an end-to-end treatment of economic growth, emissions, climate change, damages, and emissions controls. The model allows projections of what will occur with no policies, with efficient policies be, how nations can undertake policies to limit climate change (in the current runs to 2 degrees C), and the impacts of limited participation. These new estimates indicate that coordinated international policies have a substantial economic benefit. The optimal carbon tax is estimated to be 8 per ton CO_2) for 2010 in 2005 prices. The economic optimum would limit global temperature rise to an average of 2.5 degrees C over 1900 levels for the 22nd and 23rd century.Climate change economics, Environmental policy, Economic growth
Strengthening the capability approach : the foundations of the capability approach, with insights from two challenges
The Capability Approach was initially developed by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, with the first basic articulation presented in his 1979 ‘Equality of What?’ Tanner Lecture. Since then, the approach has gained a huge amount of attention as a conceptual framework which offers a clear and insightful way to measure well-being and development. Most recently, the approach has been refined and extended by Martha Nussbaum to issues of disability, nationality, and species membership in political philosophy.
This project is about the foundations of the capability approach. More specifically, this project asks whether we can, and whether there are good reasons to, strengthen those foundations. The conclusions drawn here are that we ought to think seriously about the way that the capability approach develops as a theory that responds to real world challenges and change. More importantly, this project contends – in light of the challenges of future people and indigenous peoples – that there is good reason to think of new ways to ground the approach. This project takes up this challenge and grounds the approach in a modified version of Tim Mulgan’s approach to well-being. This project demonstrates that this alternative enriches the capability approach by providing us with a way of making sense of important problems, and with options for moving forward.
Overall, this project asks important questions about how the capability approach could evolve based on challenges that remain relatively under-explored in the current literature. This project contributes to this literature by demonstrating that we can and ought to strengthen the capability approach and its ability to understand, take on board, and resolve these challenges
