THE PERCEPTUAL EFFECT OF AIR SACS

    No full text
This paper presents work on air sacs that extends the work presented by de Boer, (2008a). In that paper, and before (Fitch, 2000) air sacs were identified as a likely feature of our evolutionary ancestors that may have been lost because of the evolution of speech. In the mean time, a more accurate understanding of air sac acoustics has been achieved (de Boer, 2008b; Riede et al., 2008). Ape-like air sacs modify the acoustics of a vocal tract in three ways: they add a lowfrequency resonance (near the resonance frequency of the air sac itself), they shift up the resonances of the vocal tract without the air sac, and they shift these resonances closer together. The question that is addressed in the present paper is how these changes influence perception of the difference between vocalizations

    Leo Boer Collection NPAPH

This photo archive contains the photo collection of the late Leo Boer (1926-2009). As a student for the priesthood in Rome in the mid-1950s, he had the opportunity to stay in Jerusalem for one year (1953-1954), at the École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem. There he engaged himself in Biblical studies, joined the third excavation led by Father Roland de Vaux at Khirbet Qumran – near the caves in which the famous Dead Sea Scrolls were found – and participated in many archaeological excursions organised by the École Biblique. After Boer died, twenty-one photo film canisters were discovered in a box in his garage. In total the photo films turned out to contain about seven hundred photographs taken by Boer of places in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Egypt in 1953 and 1954. Although the photographs had not been developed, Boer had made a careful list of them during his stay in Jerusalem, adding numbers to the pictures, captions and the dates on which they were taken. Boer also kept a diary and travel account, which consists of about a hundred and forty pages, including a preface and index. The combination of his pictures and text provides us with an excellent spirit of the times, the years just after the Second World War and the foundation of the State of Israel. Moreover, it gives an account of the beginnings of a new phase in Palestinian archaeology

Joint origins of speech and music: Testing evolutionary hypotheses on modern humans

    No full text
How music and speech evolved is a mystery. Several hypotheses on their origins, including one on their joint origins, have been put forward but rarely tested. Here we report and comment on the first experiment testing the hypothesis that speech and music bifurcated from a common system. We highlight strengths of the reported experiment, point out its relatedness to animal work, and suggest three alternative interpretations of its results. We conclude by sketching a future empirical programme extending this work

    No full text
An analysis of variance was performed where all of these factors were defined as fixed effects. All factors had an influence (p<0.05) in the variation of BW, whose overall mean was 3.0±0.7 kg. Birth weights of ¾ B (3.1 kg), BN (3.0 kg), B (2.9 kg), and N (2.9 kg) kids were similar (p>0.05), but higher (p<0.05) than of ⅞ B (2.7 kg) kids. Birth weight of single birth kids (3.2 kg) was higher (p<0.05) than of twin birth kids (3.0 kg), which in turn was higher than of triple+ born kids (2.8 kg, p<0.05). Male kids were heavier (3.1 kg, p<0.05) at birth than female kids (2.9 kg). Dams of third kidding had kids with the highest (p<0.05) BW (3.1 kg), as compared with those of first and second kidding (3.0 kg), while dams of fourth kidding had kids with the least BW (2.8 kg). In general, the highest BW´s were found in rainy (3.1 kg) than in dry seasons (2.9 kg). It is concluded that there are important sources of variation on birth weight of kids that must be considered when this variable is a selection criterion for production of “cabrito” in this region.Tesis ( Maestría en Ciencias, especialista en Ganadería).- Colegio de Postgraduados, 2008.CONACY
