Encuentros literarios entre Asquenaz y Sefarad : la recepción en la literatura judeoespañola de la obra narrativa de los hermanos Philippson y de Marcus Lehman
El objetivo de esta tesis doctoral fue estudiar qué tipo de relaciones existían a mediados del siglo XIX entre el mundo de la literatura judeo-alemana y las creaciones literarias sefardíes. Como fuentes literarias nos sirvieron en primer lugar el periódico El Correo de Viena y las Güertas de Historia. Un elemento cultural importante que se establece gracias al movimiento innovador europeo es la prensa, o sea, el inagotable mundo de los periódicos con sus aportaciones literarias en forma de novelas por entregas.
A lo largo del siglo XIX la importancia de la ciudad de Viena como centro económico, cultural y social está en pleno desarrollo. Uno de los personajes centrales en el ámbito de la prensa vienesa es Sem Tob Semo. Gracias a este redactor prolífico que funda El Coreo de Viena y la Güerta de Historia, los sefardíes del Imperio Otomano entran en contacto con la literatura del ámbito judío-alemán centroeuropeo. Las narraciones son traducidas en la mayoría de los casos por el propio Semo Tob Semo o por su yerno Adolf Zemlinsky del alemán al judeoespañol. En nuestro trabajo de investigación nos centramos en los textos narrativos de Marcus Lehmann y de los hermanos Phöbus y Ludwig Philippson. Mientras los hermanos Philippson representan el ámbito de la novela histórica, Marcus Lehmann es uno de los principales autores de la literatura juvenil. Tanto Ludwig Philippson como Marcus Lehmann poseen una enorme importancia y trascendencia entre los judíos alemanes del siglo XIX. Analizamos el proceso de creación de las novelas judeoespañolas escogidas, contrastando –hasta donde ha sido posible– las diversas versiones sefardíes y comparándolas con sus originales alemanes, teniendo en cuenta en todo momento el trasfondo histórico y sociocultural de dos sociedades judías tan diferentes: la europea y la oriental.
En la transmisión literaria entre Viena y el Imperio Otomano se observan diferentes momentos. A partir de los años sesenta del siglo XIX se realizan en Viena traducciones al judeoespañol de las narraciones de los tres autores alemanes mencionados. Desde los años ochenta del este siglo se empiezan a reeditar los textos vieneses en Salónica, y sobre todo desde los años noventa encontramos en el Imperio Otomano no sólo las reediciones de las novelas alemanas de Salónica, sino también nuevas traducciones y adaptaciones de diferentes autores sefardíes. Gracias a nuestro material de estudio hemos podido mostrar que efectivamente se producen traducciones judeoespañolas a partir de originales alemanes. Nuestro análisis prueba que entre el mundo asquenazí y el sefardí existen nexos literarios ya después de mediados del siglo XIX. Se efectúa un traslado literario por el interior de las comunidades judías, es decir, los textos viajan de Centroeuropa al mundo oriental y, gracias a ello se produce un acercamiento entre los sefardíes y los asquenazíes. La literatura alemana que, originariamente se escribe para un público asquenazí, alcanza así un radio de lectores más amplio y llega a incluir también a los sefardíes orientales
Worldsheet traversable wormholes
We construct worldsheet traversable wormholes by considering the effects of a
double-trace deformation, , coupling the endpoints of an open string in AdS
space. The operator deforming the theory is irrelevant and makes the boundaries
bend inward toward the IR. This effect, reminiscent of two-dimensional dilaton
gravities, renders the teleportation protocol more efficient and facilitates
the transfer of information between the members of the dual Bell pair. We
compare our results with those obtained with the standard double-trace
deformation, , introduced by Gao, Jafferis

Capturing the needs of amateur web designers by means of examples
Many sites are created by people who lack pro-fessional training in web design. We present ‘SiteGuide’, a tool that helps amateur web de-signers to decide which information will be in-cluded in a new web site and how the information will be organized. SiteGuide takes as input URLs of web sites from the same domain as the site the user wants to create. It automatically searches the pages of these example sites for common top-ics and common structural features. On the basis of these commonalities it creates a model of the user’s needs. The model can serve as a starting point for the new web site. Also, it can be used to check whether important elements are missing in a concept version of the new site and, if neces-sary, to adapt the initial design.

Classifying Web Pages with Visual Features
To automatically classify and process web pages, current systems use the textual content of those pages, including both the displayed content and the underlying (HTML) code. However, a very important feature of a web page is its visual appearance. In this paper, we show that using generic visual features we can classify the web pages for several different types of tasks. The features used in this document are simple color and edge histograms, Gabor and texture features. These were extracted using an off-the-shelf visual feature extraction method. In three experiments, we classify web pages based on their aesthetic value, their recency and the type of website. Results show that these simple, global visual features already produce good classification results. We also introduce an online tool that uses the trained classifiers to assess new web pages

Accurator: Nichesourcing for Cultural Heritage
With the increase of cultural heritage data published online, the usefulness of data in this open context hinges on the quality and diversity of descriptions of collection objects. In many cases, existing descriptions are not sufficient for retrieval and research tasks, resulting in the need for more specific annotations. However, eliciting such annotations is a challenge since it often requires domain-specific knowledge. Where crowdsourcing can be successfully used to execute simple annotation tasks, identifying people with the required expertise might prove troublesome for more complex and domain-specific tasks. Nichesourcing addresses this problem, by tapping into the expert knowledge available in niche communities. This paper presents Accurator, a methodology for conducting nichesourcing campaigns for cultural heritage institutions, by addressing communities, organizing events and tailoring a web-based annotation tool to a domain of choice. The contribution of this paper is fourfold: 1) a nichesourcing methodology, 2) an annotation tool for experts, 3) validation of the methodology in three case studies and 4) a dataset including the obtained annotations. The three domains of the case studies are birds on art, bible prints and fashion images. We compare the quality and quantity of obtained annotations in the three case studies, showing that the nichesourcing methodology in combination with the image annotation tool can be used to collect high-quality annotations in a variety of domains. A user evaluation indicates the tool is suited and usable for domain-specific annotation tasks
Clustering Objects from Multiple Collections
Clustering methods cluster objects on the basis of a similarity measure between the objects. In clustering tasks where the objects come from more than one collection often part of the similarity results from features that are related to the collections rather than features that are relevant for the clustering task. For example, when clustering pages from various web sites by topic, pages from the same web site often contain similar terms. The collection-related part of the similarity hinders clustering as it causes the creation of clusters that correspond to collections instead of topics. In this paper we present two methods to restrict clustering to the part of the similarity that is not associated with membership of a collection. Both methods can be used on top of standard clustering methods. Experiments on data sets with objects from multiple collections show that our methods result in better clusters than methods that do not take collection information into account
The Knowledge Graph for End-to-End Learning on Heterogeneous Knowledge
In modern machine learning,raw data is the preferred input for our models. Where a decade ago data scientists were still engineering features, manually picking out the details we thought salient, they now prefer the data in their raw form. As long as we can assume that all relevant and irrelevant information is present in the input data, we can design deep models that build up intermediate representations to sift out relevant features. However, these models are often domain specific and tailored to the task at hand, and therefore unsuited for learning on heterogeneous knowledge: information of different types and from different domains. If we can develop methods that operate on this form of knowledge, we can dispense with a great deal more ad-hoc feature engineering and train deep models end-to-end in many more domains. To accomplish this, we first need a data model capable of expressing heterogeneous knowledge naturally in various domains, in as usable a form as possible, and satisfying as many use cases as possible. We argue that the knowledge graph is a suitable candidate for this data model. We further discuss some of the promises and challenges of this approach, and how we are currently broadening our efforts to multi-modal knowledge graphs
