    H2020 SESAR RETINA (Resilient Synthetic Vision for Advanced Control Tower Air Navigation Service Provision)

    The RETINA (Resilient Synthetic Vision for Advanced Control Tower Air Navigation Service Provision) project investigates the potential and applicability of SV tools and Virtual/Augmented Reality (V/AR) display techniques for the Air Traffic Control (ATC) service provision by the airport control tower. In the RETINA concept, controllers are no longer limited by what the human eye can physically see out of the tower windows. As trust in digital data will continue to grow, RETINA’s concept will allow the controller to have a head-up view of the airport traffic even in low visibility conditions similar to the synthetic vision currently used in the cockpit. RETINA builds upon the technologies developed in SESAR, such as remote tower, safety nets, SWIM, to provide augment reality tools for the tower controller. In the two-year project the concept was developed, implemented and validated by means of human-in-the-loop real time simulation

    The Resilient Synthetic Vision for Advanced Control Tower Air Navigation Service Provision (RETINA) project is one of the selected Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) exploratory research projects on High Performing Airport Operations and it investigates the potential and applicability of Virtual/Augmented Reality (V/AR) technologies for the provision of Air Traffic Control (ATC) service by the airport control tower. The project assesses whether those concepts that stand behind tools such as Head-Mounted Displays (HUDs), Enhanced Vision Systems (EVSs) and Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS) can be transferred to ATC with relatively low effort and substantial benefits for controllers' Situational Awareness (SA). In doing so, two different augmented reality systems are investigated: Spatial Displays (SD) that, potentially, can be made to coincide with the tower windows and See-Through Head-Mounted Displays (ST-HMD). In this context the RETINA concept will enable the Air Traffic Controller to have a head-up view of the airport traffic even in low visibility conditions, similar to the vision currently provided in the cockpit with Head-Up displays. In the two-year project, the RETINA concept was developed, implemented and validated by means of human-in-the-loop simulations where the external view is provided to the user through a high fidelity 3D digital model in an immersive environment

    The history of aeronautics and the development of commercial aircraft is extremely related to climate facts. As an example, mono-wing metallic aircraft were preferred to airships in the past century for many reasons, one being the possibility of pressurizing the cabin, making a flight at high altitudes possible. Nowadays, climate change is not only driving new design perspectives but also has a role in aviation business and economics. Climate change is increasing global-mean tropospheric temperatures, but the localized trends are uneven. The wind speeds are also being modified, both at the surface and aloft. Furthermore, we experience more and more severe fluctuations and extreme weather. These effects are known to have a role on increased take-off distances where excess runway lengths exist and reduced payloads where they do not, increased en-route flight times, and increased frequency and severity of encounters with clear air turbulence in some regions. Also, climate changes push wildlife activity modifications in some regions that are shifting locations of fight safety hazards, with increased burdens upon airports and associated infrastructure. A multi-disciplinary research effort by scientists, meteorologists, climatologists, and engineers is now needed to understand better the impacts of the changing climate on the entire aviation system, including aircraft and infrastructure.     Design characterization and automatic identification of character lines in automotive field

    Design style and designer role get a great importance in the success of a new product launched in the marketplace. In particular, in the automotive domain a deep connection arises from the created shapes and the user’s emotional states. For this reason the designer role is commonly considered as twofold, being both a technician and an artist. The methodology proposed in this paper does define a design support tool for the definition of shapes in the automotive sector. This methodology is based on the study of the most relevant character lines. These lines are automatically selected by means of CAD tools and then analysed to identify mathematical relations between such lines and other geometrical features typical of the car. This part of the methodology originates a mathematical definition of the style that is associated to a qualitative definition of the style itself, which is based on data coming from user interviews analysed through statistical tools. Based on mathematical and qualitative definitions, a methodology to connect geometrical and emotional data has been developed. This methodology has been applied to a set of cars showing the results presented in this paper. Cars appearances and the emotional feelings they produce are linked together; some relationships are deduced to create a support tool in the early design phase

    As a matter of fact, airports are considered as the bottleneck to increasing the capacity of the overall Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. While augmenting throughput in high performing airport operations, attention has rightly been placed on doing it in a safe manner. Many of the advances in airport operational safety come in the form of visualization tools for tower controllers. The increasing interest in Synthetic Vision (SV) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies has led various analysts to positively esteem the adoption of new tools enabling both pilots and controllers to seamlessly operate under Visual Meteorological Conditions and Instrument Meteorological Conditions.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
