Il contributo delle casse di espansione alla protezione idraulica dei territori di pianura

    No full text

Bisphenols A and its analogues induce genotoxic damage in marine and freshwater amphipods

Among plastic additives, bisphenol A (BPA), used mainly in manufacturing objects of everyday use, has received considerable attention for acting as a xenoestrogen and causing endocrine disruption. We now observe its rapid replacement with analogue compounds with similar structures (BPs) whose safety is not fully demonstrated. The present paper investigates the possible adverse effects of BPA, BPF, and BPS on DNA integrity of two gammarid species, Echinogammarus veneris and Gammarus aequicauda, to assess the environmental risk posed by these compounds in the aquatic ecosystem. Moreover, we analysed the cell-specific sensitivity to BPs using somatic (hemocytes) and germ (spermatozoa) cells that could have wide-ranging implications for their reproductive biology and long-term adverse effects at the population level. Results demonstrate that BPA and its analogues caused a genotoxic impact and highlighted lower genotoxic damage induced in sperm cells in both species tested. The implications of the findings of this study on the aquatic ecosystem are discussed, taking into account the critical role of amphipods within the freshwater trophic chain

Assessment of pre-simulated scenarios as a non-structural measure for flood management in case of levee-breach inundations

Levee breach inundations can entail large flood losses due to the high concentration of exposed assets in levee-protected floodplains and, sometimes, to the inadequacy or absence of early warning systems for this type of events. Since real-time modelling is computationally expensive and presents several uncertainties, which might prevent obtaining a reasonably accurate forecast of the flood propagation, an alternative methodology for the prompt prediction of flooded area, maximum depths, and arrival times during a real event was proposed. The strategy is based on the use of a database of pre-simulated scenarios of levee-breach inundations, obtained adopting a high-resolution two-dimensional shallow water model. The paper aims at the a posteriori assessment of the usefulness of this strategy. To this end, the December 2020 event on the Panaro River (Italy) is thoroughly analyzed. In the study area, the strategy had already been implemented before the event, and pre-simulated scenarios were consulted during the emergency. Post-event observations are also available for the ex-post model validation. The database was obtained considering two inflow synthetic hydrographs and a discrete number of breach locations, and unavoidable differences between real events and hypothetical scenarios were to be expected. However, for this case study, the closest levee-breach scenario in the database (in terms of breach position and inflow) provided reliable predictions of flood extent and maximum depths for the actual inundation. The pre-simulated database also helped identifying some critical spots, where effective emergency operations (sandbagging) helped protecting an urban district during the event. As accurate real-time forecasts of levee-breach inundations are yet to come, a database of pre-simulated scenarios is proven as an effective “surrogate” method for civil protection purposes

Validation of Synthetic Design Hydrographs through 2D hydrodynamic modelling

The procedure for the determination of Synthetic Design Hydrographs (SDHs), proposed in previous works, is validated by comparing the peak discharges obtained by routing a long series of historical floods and the synthetic floods at different stations along a complex river system. At this aim, the 60 km long terminal stretch of the Dora Baltea river (Northern Italy) has been modelled according to fully 2D high resolution hydrodynamic approach. The fluvial branch is of considerable complexity due to a strong contraction induced by the presence of a narrow Roman bridge, which, during the most important flood events, causes the reactivation of a paleochannel and the flooding of a part of the city of Ivrea. The hydraulic model has been calibrated on the basis of the main historical floods. Then, all the historical floods over a period of more than 80 years (1939–2020) and the SDHs derived by the same series have been routed. Historical and synthetic peak discharges at two downstream stations have been then compared in probability plots. The results show that the peak discharge distributions derived by routing the historical floods and the SDHs compare well. This suggests that SDHs construction procedure is reliable and has statistical significance

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
