At the end of dance: essays on dancing and literature
This work deals with the relationship between dance and literature. At the end of a dance event, the text takes place and therefore occupies an ambiguous place; its existence continually certifies the end of the dance that motivated it, and yet it makes it possible to access traces of sensations and images of a dance forever lost. We start, at first, from the analysis of poems and texts written specifically from dance, such as the poem \"Estudos para uma bailadora andaluza\" by João Cabral de Melo Neto, and Dance and the soul by Paul Valéry. Then, it relates dance works with literary works under the focus of the fall and the weight of the body, which are important concepts and experiences in dance, from butoh to contemporary dance. Finally, we analyze the entry of pedestrian movements, such as walking, in dance works, relating this gesture with the entry of the \"infra-ordinary\" in the words of Georges Perec, in poetry, with the use of free verse, writing made from everyday quotes and references, with the inclusion of one\'s own experience and reflections on the act of writing, on the body itself, on the act of dancing. At the end of each chapter there is a coda, which is both a preparation for the subject of the next chapter and a more experimental way of exercising writing as a dance experience. In the last coda, the writing becomes openly poetic and the personal events experienced by the author throughout the writing of the dissertation dialogue with the subjects and texts of the research
This text is an attempt to go into Photomaton & Vox (1979), a work written by the Portuguese author Helberto Helder, by being devoured by the body of the book\'s writing which I call \"rapariga\" or body-landscape as well as devouring it. Throughout this intimate journey, one can first feel a fire, which burns and illuminates the bodies, and also a flow of images that referes more to cinematography than to photography. Considering the body as a bundle of affections and capacities (a concept of Eduardo Viveiros de Castro), we will follow the death of a body that we recognize to the birth of another one, specially made of holes and fulcrums, through which images in movement pass by and survive. Adding philosophy and antropology to Helder\'s language, one intends to perceive the specific sharing made by the poet of the sensitive, allowing itself to be affected by it, as well as affecting it, twining itself in it
The body to be made: Sade and the enunciative equivocity in the three versions of Justine
This thesis aims to study the writing of Marquis de Sade, especially the three versions of his virtuous character: Les infortunes de la vertu (1787), Justine ou les malheurs de la vertu (1791) and La Nouvelle Justine ou les malheurs de la vertu (1799). In them, the object of inquiry is the way that writing produces equivoques, fields of resonance and compossibilities between conceptual pairs in which it works upon (namely, virtue/vice; infelicity/prosperity, etc). The dramatization of the concepts and symbolic norms that guide them sets an equivocal cenography, whose operation consists in sabotage the univocity of the terms\' meanings that it triggers. This constitutive equivocity of the sadian writing leaves suspended the whole enunciative positioning, not subsuming itself to the particularizations of the author\'s intentions, neither to a univocal determination of the context. However, it is proposed to singularize its indetermination, or better put, the overdetermination of the perspective torsions that it performs and its equivoques, as well as the resends that it fabricates and stages in a network of enunciations. Therefore, this thesis dramatizes two axes of analysis, in which the virtue is fundamental: the discussion in the Eighteenth century about the moralizing function of the arts and Robespierre\'s jacobin politics. In the passage from one to another, it is Sade\'s enunciative equivocity that tangles the literary texts\'s performativity and the institution of the law
The double passage (of rhythm): poetic creation and translation in the work of Mirta Rosenberg and her dialogue with Marianne Moore
The notion of rhythm, conceived by the French theorist Henri Meschonnic as the organization of meaning in discourse, is the starting point for observing how language, history, and discourse articulate in her poems. Rosenberg debuted in the Argentine literary scene shortly after the end of the military dictatorship in the country in December 1983. At a moment of profound political and social reconfiguration and greater access for women authors to the literary system, Rosenberg established in her poetics what I call the \"rhythm of individuation\". Also through rhythm, this thesis establishes a dialogue between Mirta Rosenberg and the poetics of Marianne Moore, the first author ever translated by her in her prolific and award-winning career as a literary translator. The translation of Moore\'s anthology El reparador de agujas de campanario y otros poemas (1988) into Spanish profoundly influenced the modulation of Rosenberg\'s poetic voice, as it coincided with the writing of her first two books. Finally, understanding translation as a privileged space for reflection on the intentions of a poetics, I present the anthology No momento de nascer, comprising of unpublished translations into Portuguese of sixteen poems by Rosenberg, commented on in resonance with Meschonnics though
Map-things for blind men: Nuno Ramos, voice and crossed materialities
The thesis proposes an interpretative trajectory through the work of the writer and visual artist Nuno Ramos (1960), approaching its literary and plastic realms, as well as the artists activity as essay-writer. It focuses, first of all, on the different modes of conception of language, regarding the artists writing practices and, most of all, the production of relations between this domain and an expanded field of the visual arts, identified in the core of a major part of Ramoss poetics. For doing so, its crossed perspective is structured by a notion of voice, grounded upon references from certain theories of utterance and poetry and psychoanalytical concepts, mostly from the Lacanian tradition, attempting to carry some of its ethical, political and ontological consequences, always in regard to the issue of the subject. Parts I, II and III begin with a basic chronological organization, and bring to the fore the analyses of works considered to be essential for the purposes of the thesis, always making an effort to expand these analyses towards the multiple realms of the artists activity, aiming at pointing out structural and historical comparisons between literature and the visual arts, as well as between Ramoss poetics and its others. Its basic corpus is composed by the books Cujo (1993), Ó (2008) and Sermões (2015), and by the visual art works 111 (1992), Vai, vai (2006) and Ensaio sobre a dádiva (2014/2016). In the last part of the thesis, these debates are expanded by means of a reading of some aspects of the artists essaywriting, mostly in regard to the theme of interpretation of Brazil, and attempting to unfold this line, in relation to the artist activity as song-writer, towards the universe of popular song
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
