Financing and Deploying Automated Freight Systems

    No full text
New technologies are bringing Automated Freight Systems (AFS), which aim to reduce congestion, mitigate environmental impacts and enhance public safety, to fruition. The financing and deployment issues of AFS differ from other Intelligent Transport System applications. This chapter briefly introduces major concepts of AFS. The financing strategies for these concepts are discussed, in which the government subsidies play an important role through the use of public-private partnership. Economies of scale and externalities of the current and new systems are discussed. In the discussion of the deployment of AFS, it is suggested that deployment schemes are highly correlated with financing strategies.Automated Freight, Pipeline, Trucks, Rail

Skin-Stiffener Separation in T-Stiffened Composite Specimens in Postbuckling Condition

    No full text
An experimental and numerical investigation was conducted to study the skin-stiffener separation of single T-shape stiffener specimens in postbuckling condition. Three specimens were manufactured with a centrally located Teflon insert, and were loaded in compression until collapse. Deformation patterns and separation evolution were monitored during the tests. To measure the full-field displacements and the strain distributions of the specimens, a digital image correlation (DIC) system was used. Skin-stiffener separation was observed and measured with an ultrasound system. Finite-element (FE) analyses were conducted to capture interlaminar damage mechanism based on the virtual crack closure technique. The numerical analysis accurately predicted the postbuckling deformation and the skin-stiffener separation behavior. The close correlation between the experimental and numerical results allows for further exploitation of the strength reserve in the postbuckling region and wider design options for the next generation of composite aircraft designs.</p

Does ridesourcing impact driving decisions: A survey weighted regression analysis

    No full text
The initial public offerings (IPOs) of Uber and Lyft in 2019 marked a milestone for the decade-old ridesourcing. As we start to embrace ridesourcing in our daily life, we also rearrange our daily travel amongst different modes of transportation. As the fundamental decisions in travel behavior, car ownership and car travel should be re-examined in the advent of shared mobility. In this paper, we applied a vehicle choice model that factors in ridesourcing frequency to understand the decisions about (1) how many cars an individual would declare as the primary driver of, and (2) the annual vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for all cars he or she drive. We used a subsample of the latest 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data that focus on the Capital region (Washington, D.C. – Maryland – Virginia) as our study area. We applied a weighted regression analysis following the NHTS survey design and derived population-representative results on both decisions. In addition, we calculated the driving cost for each household vehicle based on the latest fuel economy data and incorporated driving cost into the car travel model. The results suggest that ridesourcing is associated with a smaller chance of an individual being the primary driver of a car. However, the elasticity indicates that ridesourcing usage has a small impact on the number of primarily driven cars. Furthermore, ridesourcing has no significant impact on the annual VMT, either. Driving cost, on the other hand, still plays the key role in determining driving distances

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Column leaching of low-grade sulfide ore from Zijinshan copper mine

Copper and iron dissolution of Zijinshan low-grade copper sulfide ores was investigated in ore-packed columns. At 60 degrees C and pH 1.0, 37.1 g Fe(III) L-1 permitted effective copper dissolution and inhibited the activity of iron-oxidizing microorganisms. At 30 degrees C, microorganisms stimulated Fe(II) and pyrite oxidation, resulting in 85 and 54% of copper and pyrite extraction yields, respectively. Bacteria belonging to the genera Acidithiobacillus and Leptospirillum were dominant as observed by real-time PCR assay. Aeration and inoculation of columns were not necessary. Solutions had a higher pH of 1.7 in the columns operated without recirculation. Under these conditions, copper extraction was not affected and Fe(III) precipitated as jarosite, indicating a novel method for iron control in Zijinshan copper mine. (c) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The effect of gamma irradiation on space charge behaviour and dielectric spectroscopy of low-density polyethylene

    No full text
The influence of gamma irradiation on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been studied through space charge measurement and dielectric spectroscopy. Commercial LDPE film with a thickness of 100µm was irradiated with γ-rays at a dose rate of approximately 10kGy/h to different doses up to 100kGy in an atmosphere of air, vacuum and nitrogen respectively. Space charge profiles vary depending on irradiation environments and radiation dose. The space charge profile of a sample after irradiation at 100kGy in air is more complicated than those irradiated in vacuum and nitrogen at same dose. More importantly, the space charge decay rate for the irradiated samples is slower than that of the virgin sample, indicating that the irradiation had changed the material by the generation of deep traps for space charge. Irradiation in air also produced changes in the dielectric spectrum in the frequency range between 10-3Hz and 106Hz where the imaginary part of the permittivity was found to be about one order of magnitude higher than that of the virgin sample (~10-4). This was attributed to oxidation as samples with the same (or lower) radiation dose in vacuum or nitrogen showed no pronounced difference to that of virgin samples
