ABSTRACT Tobias Zech studied biochemistry and received his Master's degree at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin, Germany, before moving to the University of Oxford, UK, for a PhD in the laboratory of Thomas Harder on T cell receptor signalling and activation. In 2008, Tobias joined Laura Machesky at the Beatson Institute in Glasgow for post-doctoral work on cell migration and motility and the role of the actin cytoskeleton. Tobias established his research group in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at the University of Liverpool, in 2014. There, his group studies processes of cell migration and cancer cell invasion, with an emphasis on actin dynamics and receptor trafficking.</jats:p

A 16-ka delta O-18 record of lacustrine sugar biomarkers from the High Himalaya reflects Indian Summer Monsoon variability

We investigated a late glacial-Holocene lacustrine sediment archive located at 4,050 m a.s.l. in the small carbonate-free catchment of Lake Panch Pokhari, Helambu Himal, Nepal. A delta O-18 sugar biomarker record was established by applying novel compound-specific delta O-18 analysis of plant sugar biomarkers (Zech and Glaser in Rapid Commun Mass Spectrom 23:3522-3532, 2009). This method overcomes analytical challenges such as extraction and purification faced by previous methods aimed at using delta O-18 of aquatic cellulose as a paleoclimate proxy. The delta O-18 results for sugar biomarkers arabinose, xylose and fucose agree well and reveal a pronounced trend towards lower delta O-18 values during the deglaciation and the onset of the Bolling/Allerod interstadial. By contrast, the period of the Younger Dryas is characterized by higher delta O-18 values. The early Holocene again reveals lower delta O-18 values. We suggest that our lacustrine delta O-18 record reflects coupled hydrological and thermal control. It is strongly related to changes in the oxygen isotopic composition of paleo-precipitation and resembles the delta O-18 records of Asian speleothems. With respect to the 'amount effect,' the record is interpreted as reflecting the Indian Summer Monsoon intensity. The precipitation signal is, however, amplified in our record by evaporative O-18 enrichment that is controlled by the ratio of precipitation to evaporation. We suggest that our delta O-18 record reflects the variability of the Indian Summer Monsoon, which was strong during the Bolling/Allerod interstadial and early Holocene, but weak during the Younger Dryas stadial. This interpretation is corroborated by a pollen-based index for Lake Panch Pokhari that estimated the strength of the Indian Summer Monsoon versus the strength of the Westerlies. Millennial-scale synchronicity with the Greenland delta O-18 temperature records highlights the previously suggested strong teleconnections between the Asian Monsoon system and North Atlantic climate variability

Sperm with functioning receptors for hyaluronic acid are essential for fertilization of oocytes in vivo and for conventional IVF method as they have an important role during the binding of the sperm to the zona pellucida and during acrosome reaction.Three different methods for sperm selection have been compared for their ability to select for sperm with functioning receptor for hyaluronic acid. Two well-known and routinely used methods, the density-gradient centrifugation and the swim-up method, have been compared to a newer and fewer used method, the Zech-Selector. Therefore the native ejaculate has been split into three parts and each part has been processed with one of the mentioned selection methods. The number of sperm with functioning receptors for hyaluronic acid have been evaluated by the means of Hyaluronic-Binding-Assay.The Zech-Selector selects 98.6% of Sperm with functioning receptor for hyaluronic acid and an effective power of 0.6. The swim-up method selects89.75% Sperm with functioning receptors for hyaluronic acid and an effective power of 0.28. A non-significant result for the density-gradient-centrifugation has been obtained, regarding the selection of 87.27% sperm with functioning receptors for hyaluronic acid. 79.66% of the sperm in the native ejaculate had functioning receptors for hyaluronic acid.In comparison, the Zech-Selector selects sperm with functioning receptors for hyaluronic acid more efficiently with an effective power of 0.32 compared to the swim-up method, and an effective power of 0.36 compared to the density gradient centrifugation. This study shows that the Zech-Selector works best for the selection of Sperm with functioning receptors for hyaluronic acid.Michael ZechZusammenfassungen auf Deutsch und EnglischAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung des Verfassers/der VerfasserinMasterarbeit Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz 202

The Dinggedicht in the Crisis of Representation: An Example by the Poet Paul Zech

    No full text
The Dinggedicht (object-poem) is a kind of poetic composition. It has a certain tradition in German poetry. It develops in the context of art representation crisis –which begins in the mid-19th century– and of the historical avant-gardes. During this period, the Dinggedicht acquires a peculiar significance as a way of elaborating the artistic object. Within its tradition Rainer Maria Rilke –not only because of his productions, but also because of his reflections on the subject– and Paul Zech were among the most important exponents of this kind of poetic form.Fil: Sufotinsky Reynoso, Eric Tomás. Anästhesie und perioperative Betreuung bei Patienten mit Morbus Parkinson

    No full text
Idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome is associated with the loss of dopaminergic cells. It is defined by the presence of akinesia together with one of the cardinal symptoms: rigor, tremor, or postural instability. As the perioperative management of these patients can be challenging and they have an increased perioperative risk, every anaesthesiologist should know some special features. If a patient with Parkinson's disease does not receive the required amount of dopa, akinetic crisis may occur. Moreover, the administration of dopamine-antagonistic drugs can trigger a malignant neuroleptic syndrome. These are life-threatening clinical pictures that require intensive medical treatment. Therefore, patients with Parkinson's disease should be enabled to keep the period without the intake of the specific medication as short as possible. General anaesthesia should be performed with short acting anaesthetics and a regional anaesthesia might be beneficial. Besides, all dopamine antagonists sometimes used for prophylaxis or therapy of delirium or PONV (haloperidol, metoclopramide) are contraindicated. Alternatives are short-acting benzodiazepines, atypical neuroleptics and domperidone
