between stakeholders, water users and institutions within a river basin, among other reason. Each one of the
stakeholders has a separate agenda, and therefore, there is a duplication of efforts, interference in the
management and even contradiction in the decisions taken. The objective of this study is to develop a serious
game of simulation and strategy to stimulate communication among stakeholders and improve decision making
based on a common vision, applied to a case study in the upper part of the San Pedro river basin. In the game's
story, players represent the Watershed Council, who will decide the future of the watershed by making
decisions on new demands, land use change, conservation areas, among others. The game has a total period of
30 years, divided into 3 subperiods, in which decisions will generate impacts that will be simulated in the
WEAP modeling software. The decisions are represented by indicators in a graphical interface allowing the
user to observe the behavior of the water resource in a visual and playful way. The results reflect the experience
and feedback obtained in two workshops carried out to evaluate the usability of the tool with 26 participants. In
conclusion, it was determined that the game is a tool that allows the acquisition of knowledge on complex
issues, facilitates communication among stakeholders and thus, improves decision making in IWRM
Mountain wetlands, known as Bofedales, are key ecosystems for water management due to their regulation capacity and contribution to base flows. Globally, these ecosystems represent highly vulnerable ecological assets. This study focuses on 401,531 ha located in northern Ecuador, covering the provinces of Pichincha, Napo, and Cotopaxi, and aims to develop wetland mapping using optical data (Planet), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from Sentinel-1, optical images from Sentinel-2, and surface soil moisture (SSM) estimates through the application of the Water Cloud Model (WCM). Additionally, a dynamic analysis of annual and monthly variability in wetland area was conducted. he optical mapping was performed using a multiclass classification of an optical mosaic from the year 2022. On the other hand, radar mapping was executed in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform using supervised classification with the Random Forest algorithm, considering Sentinel-1 bands (VH, VV, and VVVH_ratio), vegetation and water indices (NDVI and NDWI) derived from Sentinel-2, as well as topographic descriptors (topographic index and slope) calculated from a digital terrain model. The SSM-based mapping was carried out by calibrating the WCM, using in situ SSM measurements and estimating calibration constants through the linear regression method in Python, after which the mapping was implemented in GEE.
The mapping results showed that the exclusive use of optical data (Planet, 2022) does not allow for dynamic analysis, determining an extent of 18,919 ha for the year 2022, equivalent to 4.7% of coverage. In contrast, the combination of optical and radar data enabled a dynamic analysis, identifying 2023 as the year with the highest coverage, reaching 28,972 ha (7.2%), with April having the largest extent (6.7%). The SSM-based analysis using the WCM model determined a more stable monthly coverage, although it was found that this technique tends to underestimate wetland extent. Temporally, occupation patterns influenced by precipitation accumulation were identified. Despite an average precipitation decrease of 12.97% (17 mm) between March and April, wetlands reached their maximum extent in April, with 6.7% (27,041 ha) coverage, due to previous saturation accumulated during high-rainfall months. During the dry season (May-September), wetland areas decreased, except in August, when an increase was observed, linked to rainfall in the Amazon Basin
This study analyzes the hydrometeorological variability of the paramo in the Antisana Water Conservation Area, Ecuador, through a temporal and comparative survey of precipitation, atmospheric pressure, and relative humidity, using high-resolution data from an eddy covariance meteorological station during the period 2021-2023. The results revealed a marked daily, seasonal, and interannual variability in precipitation, with a decreasing trend throughout the study period, ranging from 951.2 mm to 709.1 mm annually. A consistent diurnal pattern was identified, with more intense rainfall during the afternoon. Atmospheric pressure showed a daily cycle (atmospheric tide) and a seasonal pattern, with maximum values in May and October. Relative humidity exhibited a marked seasonality with consistently high values, exceeding 86%, which is characteristic of the paramo. A direct relationship was found between precipitation and relative humidity, while the relationship with atmospheric pressure was not statistically significant. The study highlights the importance of high-resolution hydrometeorological monitoring for understanding the dynamics of the paramos and their response to climate variability. The findings are consistent with the scientific literature on paramo studies in the region, although local particularities were identified by working with high-resolution data. It is recommended that the study period be extended, include other variables, differentiate types of precipitation, perform spatial analyses, develop hydrological models, strengthen interdisciplinary research, and disseminate the results to promote the conservation of these strategic ecosystems
In response to the heightened risks of landslides and floods in Quito, the Metropolitan Public Water and Sanitation Company (EPMAPS) identified streams like Osorio, Caicedo, and Caupicho as vulnerable areas. This study sought to model precipitation-runoff dynamics in the Caupicho stream watershed, located in the southeastern region of Quito. Encompassing an area of 27.94 km2 and characterized by a 7.9% slope along its primary channel. The objective was to assess the watershed's hydrological response of the watershed to the extreme precipitation events witnessed on April 12, 2020, and anticipated events with return periods of 10 and 50 years, employing the HEC-HMS software. Meteorological data, including precipitation measurements from key rain gauge stations such as P23 Atacazo, C19 El Troje, P22 Chillogallo, and P56 Tanque Solanda, were utilized for model creation. Supplementary data on vegetation cover, land use, and related parameters were integrated into the analysis. Frequency analysis of precipitation data facilitated the generation of hyetographs for various return periods. The incorporation of vegetation cover and land use data enabled the calculation of the Curve Number (CN), crucial for understanding soil response to extreme precipitation. This comprehensive approach allowed for the prediction of potential peak flows during extreme events. Findings underscore the significant impact of urban expansion on rural landscapes, resulting in heightened impermeability and diminished infiltration capacity. Consequently, the Caupicho stream experiences exceptionally high peak flows during precipitation events
This study analyzes the variability of air and soil temperature in the páramo ecosystem of Antisana, using data from a vortex covariance meteorological station located at 4200 meters above sea level in the Antisana Water Conservation Area (ACHA). The dataset comprises 52,560 measurements recorded between 2021 and 2023, including continuous monitoring of soil temperatures at depths of 30, 58, and 100 cm over the same period. These measurements provide valuable insights into the thermal dynamics of this high-altitude ecosystem, which plays a crucial role in water regulation and biodiversity conservation Data processing was conducted in RStudio, enabling the identification of seasonal, monthly, daily, and diurnal patterns in both air and soil temperatures. The results reveal significant variability in air temperature throughout the year, with extreme values occurring more frequently between June and October. This period coincides with the dry season, characterized by reduced cloud cover and increased radiative cooling at night, leading to a wider thermal amplitude. In contrast, soil temperature exhibited lower variability and greater temporal and depth stability compared to air temperature, demonstrating the insulating properties of the soil. Additionally, air temperature was observed to respond more rapidly to diurnal changes, as evidenced by its higher thermal amplitude, while soil temperature showed a reduced thermal amplitude, indicating lower variability. These findings align with existing literature on páramo ecosystems, supporting previous research on temperature dynamics in high-altitude environments. However, a comparison with páramos from the southern and northern regions of Ecuador revealed that southern páramos tend to be slightly warmer. Furthermore, the rate of air temperature reduction with altitude was confirmed to be consistent with values reported by other studies on Ecuadorian páramos, reinforcing the general thermal behavior of these ecosystems
The purpose of this curricular integration work was to carry out a rainfall-runoff modeling in the Caicedo Creek basin. The watershed has an area of 1.2 km2 and is located in the northwest of the Metropolitan District of Quito. To analyze the hydrological response of the watershed to extreme events occurring on December 13, 2021, and January 31, 2022, information on vegetation and soil cover was used, as well as climatic data from the P11 Antenas and P70 El Bosque rainfall stations. These stations recorded daily rainfall of 37.30 mm and 38.70 mm during the first storm, and 51.40 mm and 55.30 mm during the second storm, respectively. In addition, a frequency analysis was performed using Hydrognomon4 software to determine rainfall intensities in the northwestern zone of the DMQ. This analysis made it possible to determine the exceedance probability of recurrence of storms similar to or greater than those that occurred on December 13, 2021, and January 31, 2022. The results indicated that, for station P11 Antenas, the mean ± 1 standard deviation indicates that about 68.3% of the data are between 20 mm and 38 mm. For station P70 El Bosque, the mean ± 1 standard deviation indicates that about 68.3% of the data are between 23 mm and 47 mm. Return periods for 10, 20 and 50 years were determined for both stations. For station P70 El Bosque, the values were 41.4 mm, 44.7 mm and 48.5 mm, respectively. For station P11 Antenas, the values were 52.0 mm, 58.3 mm and 71.5 mm, respectively. These data show the probability of occurrence of precipitation of a certain intensity in a given period. Subsequently, a hydrological model was constructed using the HEC-HMS software. For this purpose, the SCS Curve Number loss method and the SCS Unit Hydrograph transformation method were used to simulate both storms and obtain information on the flows generated in each of the storms. In the first storm, the flow rate reached a value of 0.4 m3/s, while in the second storm it was 0.8 m3/s. The total precipitation for each event was also recorded, being 37.71 mm for the first storm and 52.38 mm for the second storm. The different components of precipitation were also analyzed, including the loss prior to conversion to runoff, which was 33.61 mm and 41.92 mm respectively. The precipitation that contributed to runoff was also determined, which was 4.10 mm for the first storm and 10.46 mm for the second storm. And finally, surface runoff, which had values of 3.38 mm and 10.45 mm respectively. All these data allowed us to obtain a comprehensive view of the hydrological response of the basin to these extreme storms
Effective regulation of Earth's resources requires the utilization of planning techniques within the domain of natural resource management. This approach ensures the continued availability of resources for future generations. Water, a vital natural resource, is found in several states on Earth. One method involves the retention of water by wetland ecosystems. Hence, it is vital to comprehend the current condition of natural wetlands. Nevertheless, alterations in land utilization, along with the expansion of agricultural and grazing practices, have resulted in a decline in the global wetland areas, especially those situated in the high Andes like the paramos of South America. This research presents a new methodology for analyzing vegetation phenology in a multi-temporal manner. The strategy involves the use of interactive map analysis and spectral indices derived from multispectral images captured by UAV. The selected research site for this study is the Pugllohuma Wetland, which is situated within the Antisana Water Conservation Area. Located in the northern Andes of Ecuador, slightly below the equator by a latitude of 0.5 degrees, this wetland has been chosen as the main area of focus for our research endeavor. The investigation resulted on vegetation indices (NDVI and SAVI) that rely on the phenological state of the vegetation present in the area. These indices have demonstrated their efficacy in assessing vegetation conditions and have successfully identified a 0.150 km2 region with high vegetative density. In contrast, the assessment of bodies of water and vegetation humidity was conducted using the NDWI spectral index, which yielded a surface water area parameter of 0.169 km2 . Furthermore, a maximum water saturation zone of 69.89% was determined in the wetland through the utilization of the water table, topographic maps, and spectral water indices. Through the utilization of multivariate analysis, a comprehensive equation was derived, establishing a connection between spectral indices and the groundwater table in relation to sea level
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
