Sulfur Product Layer In Sphalerite Biooxidation: Evidences For A Mechanism Of Formation
The sphalerite-pyrite oxidation by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied to analyze how the formation of the elemental sulfur layers occurs around sphalerite grains. Two possible mechanisms of formation have been raised. One mechanism corresponds to the formation of sulfur pseudomorphs where, both, iron and zinc have been leached of the sphalerite, whereas compound sulfur is oxidized, in situ, to elemental sulfur, leaving an unreacted core of sphalerite that remains in the center. Another mechanism consists in the dissolution of iron, zinc and sulfur presents. When the attack by Fe3+ as by H + broken the S-metal bonds, sulfur is then oxidized to a series of sulfur intermediate compounds. These compounds in solution then are oxidized to elemental sulfur, which precipitates on sphalerite grains. © 2007 Trans Tech Publications.20-21134138Da Silva, G., Lastra, M.R., Budden, J.R., (2003) Minerals Engineering, 16, p. 199Rodriguez, Y., Ballester, A., Blázquez, M.L., Gonzáles, F., Muñoz, J.A., (2003) Hydrometallurgy, 71, p. 57Rossi, G., (1990) Biohydrometallurgy., , McGraw-Hill Book Company GmbH, HamburgThomas, J.E., Skinner, W.M., Smart, R., (1998) Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 62, p. 1555Weisener, C., Smart, R., Gerson, A., (2003) Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 67, p. 823Ahonen, L., Tuovinen, O., (1993) Geomicrobiology Journal, 10, p. 207Da Silva, G., (2004) Hydrometallurgy, 73, p. 313Ossa, D.M., Márquez, M.A., Zapata, D.M., (2007) Submitted to Revista Colombiana de BiotecnologíaCrundwell, F., (1987) Hydrometallurgy, 33, p. 137Crundwell, F., (1988) AIChE Journal, 34, p. 1128Fowler, T., Crundwell, F., (1999) Applied and Environmental Microbiology, 65, p. 5285Schippers, A., Sand, W., (1999) Applied and Environmental Microbiology, 65, p. 31
Gender differences in self-reported late effects, quality of life and satisfaction with clinic in survivors of lymphoma
Objectives: gender differences in perceived vulnerability to late effects and views about follow-up among cancer survivors have received little attention. As lymphoma affects both genders similarly, we compared the consequences of cancer (late effects, perceived vulnerability and quality of life (health-related quality of life (HRQoL)), and satisfaction with clinic visits between genders. Methods: a cohort of 115 younger adults (18–45 years, >5 years disease-free survival), who had been treated for lymphoma participated. Questionnaires (n = 91) were completed before and after (n = 62) routine consultant-led appointments. Survivors (n = 24) without appointments were recruited by post. Questionnaires included HRQoL, late effects, perceived vulnerability, issues survivors wanted to discuss and reported discussing in clinic, time waiting in clinic and consultation satisfaction. Results: there were no gender differences in number of self-reported late effects or perceived vulnerability. Men with more late effects reported worse psychological HRQoL (r = 0.50, p<0.001). While men wanted to discuss more topics than they did, women were able to discuss the topics they wanted (ANOVA, p = 0.01). Multiple regression analyses showed a shorter wait in clinic (r = ?0.46, p = 0.009) and discussing more topics (r = 0.34, p = 0.06) explained 30.6% of the variance in consultation satisfaction for men. Conclusions: issues surrounding follow-up provision are increasingly important given the length of survival in young adults following treatment for lymphoma. Men may experience poor psychological well-being due to distress about unanswered concerns. Consideration of their concerns should be prioritised, given that satisfaction and ultimately continued attendance at clinic and HRQoL may be dependent on the extent to which follow-up meets survivors' expectation
Bajo esta premisa, la investigación contribuye con una guía didáctica en Bionetwork que brindará un apoyo y desarrollo cognitivo para los estudiantesThe present research was conducted with the purpose of determining the importance of digital laboratories in the teaching–learning process of mitosis among second-year students of the General Unified Baccalaureate at the Unidad Educativa Municipal del Milenio “Bicentenario,” D.M. Quito, during the 2024–2025 academic year. The problem arises from the lack of technological tools used during the teaching of mitosis. The methodology of this research follows a mixed approach (qualitative–quantitative); the types of research applied were socio-educational, descriptive, field-based, and bibliographic. The required information was collected through surveys and interviews administered to 97 students and two expert teachers from the natural sciences department of the institution. The data obtained were processed using the Microsoft Excel statistical package. These results were later analyzed and interpreted, revealing that technological tools can support the learning process of mitosis. This indicates that the use of digital laboratories is associated with improved outcomes in the teaching of mitosis in second-year General Unified Baccalaureate students. Additionally, it was found that virtual environments could facilitate the detailed observation of the phases of cellular reproduction and allow simulations that strengthen the understanding of this cellular process. Based on this premise, the research contributes a didactic guide in Bionetwork that will provide cognitive support and development for studentsPregradoLicenciado(a) en Ciencias Naturale
Na-ca Exchange And Ca Fluxes During Contraction And Relaxation In Mammalian Ventricular Muscle
There are four cellular Ca transport systems which compete to remove Ca from the myoplasm in mammalian ventricular myocytes. These are 1) the SR Ca-ATPase, 2) the sarcolemmal Na-Ca exchange, 3) the sarcolemmal Ca-ATPase and 4) the mitochondrial Ca uniporter. Using multiple experimental approaches we have evaluated the dynamic interaction of these systems during the normal cardiac contraction-relaxation cycle. The SR Ca-ATPase and Na-Ca exchange are clearly the most important, quantitatively; however, the relative roles vary in a species-dependent manner. In particular, the SR is much more strongly dominant in rat ventricular myocytes, where ~ 92% of Ca removal is via SR Ca-ATPase and only 7% via Na-Ca exchange during a twitch. In other species (rabbit, ferret, cat, and guinea pig) the balance is more in the range of 70% SR Ca-ATPase and 25-30% Na-Ca exchange. Ferret ventricular myocytes also exhibit an unusually strong sarcolemmal Ca-ATPase. During the steady state the same amount of Ca must leave the cell as enters over a cardiac cycle. This implies that 25-30% of the Ca required to activate contraction must enter the cell, and experiments demonstrate that this amount of Ca may be supplied by the L-type Ca current.779430442Bers, D.M., (1991) Excitation-Contraction Coupling and Cardiac Contractile Force, pp. 1-258. , (Single author monograph.) Beyond Lesson Studies and Design Experiments: Using theoretical tools in practice and finding out how they work
This paper aims to illustrate how fruitful insights into the link between school teaching practice and student learning outcomes can be theoretically grounded by the variation theory from the field of phenomenography; and from this framework demonstrate how a 'pedagogy of awareness' can be implemented in the classroom. In this study, five teachers and 162 students at Primary Four level of school education in Hong Kong participated and the practice of the 'learning study' was adopted. By comparing the results of pre- and posttests, a significant gain was observed in the students learning outcomes.

A multilateral tax treaty: designing an instrument to modernise international tax law
In this book, the author addresses the legal and political aspects of a multilateral tax treaty that fundamentally transforms the way states cooperate in the field of international taxation. Working from a normative and pragmatic view on international tax relations, he proposes a management-focused approach to multilateral cooperation in international taxation. The resulting managerial framework treaty is drawn up on the basis of insights from political science and legal philosophy and is illustrated by means of international public law. Finally, the author evaluates the recently-adopted text of the Multilateral Convention to Implement Tax Treaty Related Measures to Prevent BEPS (the BEPS Convention) in the light of his proposed framework.Grenzen van fiscale soevereinitei
A follow-up reflection on software process improvement ROI
Our discipline must shift toward value-based software engineering, because we're obliged to prove our contributions to the financial bottom line. In the May/June 2004 IEEE Software special issue on return on investment (ROI), the author presented measurement results for the ROI of software process improvement (SPI). This article made three main contributions. First, provided a detailed overview of publications containing real-life measurement results from practical applications of SPI, in which the author measured the ROI. My study included 20 cases, with an average ROI of 7 and a median of 6.6. This indicates that SPI's net profit seems to be approximately US$7 for every dollar invested. However, I found no published cases in which SPI investments resulted in a measurable loss; furthermore, the ROI bandwidth was large (between 1.5 and 19). This indicates that the actual ROI of an SPI investment seems hard to really guarantee up front. Second, I showed that benefits are just as easy to quantify as costs. Cost measurements are always based on an agreement about how to measure and quantify costs. Such an agreement can also serve as the basis for measuring benefits. My article contained data from two real-life projects that had made such cost and benefit measurements and calculated ROI. Finally, I concluded that expressing "value" is crucial. Software engineering and its improvement are often major investments for organizations. Investments must be profitable. Because different people in different roles share one generic term for value-money, I recommended expressing any software engineering effort and its benefits in financial terms.Software TechnologyElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
