This article presents Polish disability studies as a minority and xenological discourse inscribed in the tenets and postulates of the new humanities. The author describes this discipline as a type of critique accompanying the actions of the representatives of critical and engaged art while pointing to its interventional nature. The goal of this text is to specify and characterize the emancipatory strategies of deconstructing the ableist paradigm of disability. Simultaneously, the author conducts a detailed analysis of the performance "Protected Species" by Rafał Urbacki and Anu Czerwiński

An Unfinished Errata. The “twisted” poems of Rafał Wojaczek

No full text
The article is a critical analysis of a collection of unpublished texts by Rafał Wojaczek entitled Nie te czasy. Utwory nieznane [Not These Times. Unknown Poems]. In the first part of the paper, the author places the book within a broader context, revealing the specific nature of its reception. He regards the analyzed volume as an element of an ongoing process of complementing the overall work of the Wroclavian artist that began a few years ago. In the second part, the author focuses on the editing of selected poems. An in-depth comparative analysis of published versions and archival records makes it possible to detect numerous editorial mistakes made during the preparation of the volume, concerning both the question of the correct reading of the autographs and typescripts, and the reconstruction of the creative process necessary for understanding the available archival material. The author of the paper puts forward a claim that this supplementation of the poet’s canon is dangerous, for it distorts not only the poetic oeuvre of Rafał Wojaczek, but also the contents of the archive itself. The scarce editorial commentary justifying the final shape of the poems on the basis of the adopted criteria of evaluating the archival records cannot efficiently replace the sophisticated critical apparatus obligatory in such cases, and it turns out to be not only insufficient, but also contrary to the facts.

Rafał Wojaczek: Advertisement in the Light of a Legend

No full text
The article entitled “Rafał Wojaczek: Advertisement in the Light of a Legend” is the first part of a draft which tries to describe a breakthrough moment, in which the biography of Rafał Wojaczek coincides with the beginning of his literary output. The author makes a central point of the formula: “advertisement is the engine of trade” (appearing in the notebook collecting his early poetical notes from the period of studies at Polish philology), which is placed in contrast to the statement by Julian Przyboś: “the art of a poem is the engine of poetry”. The author, examining the earlier editions of Wojaczek’s poems explains (using the sociological and philosophical apparatus) the mechanisms conditioning the phenomenon of the reception of his poetry. At the same time, he launches the notion of pre-reception, which—being a labile notion, situated in the borderland between reception and advertise-ment—indicates a dual position of an object, to which the pre-reception refers (presence and absence at the same time). This, in turn, announces the poetic strategy of Wojaczek, embracing the form and the subject matter of a poem (expressiveness against a precise structure of a poem), and foretells a subsequent part focusing on the question of the actual reception, taking into consideration the somatic character of his output as well as its autothematic involvement.</span

RAFAŁ WOJACZEK’S “SICKNESS UNTO NON-EXISTENCE”

The paper focuses upon the philosophical message rendered by Rafał Wojaczek’s poetry. The author regards the issue of non‑existence as the central theme of Wojaczek’s creative output, and analyses it in the context of existentialist philosophy, referring to Martin Heidegger’s concepts in particular. The following four aspects of the leading idea of non‑existence are identified and discussed in the article: non‑existence understood as death which not only constitutes everyone’s destiny but also validates individual life; non‑existence as nothingness which is disclosed in anxiety, with the retreat of being in its entirety; non‑existence as a blurred personal identity; and, finally, non‑existence as a condition of creativity. The unique form and style of this poetry are considered to play an essential role in conveying the metaphysical content

SHARUNAS BARTAS — IN ISOLATIONThe author analyzes the works of Sharunas Bartas — a Lithuanian avant-garde filmmaker, one of the core persons of the neo-modernist trend in contemporary art cinema. Syska describes the origins of the unique aesthetics and idiosyncratic elements of film style which allow Bartas to create one of the most convincing models of cinematic melancholy. The topic of the time, the past, subjectivity and decay as well as youth destroyed by the history, alienation and poverty are the most visible in his films. Syska also highlights these elements of film narration which present Bartas as a representative of Slow-cinema, underlying the use of post-colonial methodology in description strategies. Translated by Rafał SyskaSHARUNAS BARTAS — IN ISOLATIONThe author analyzes the works of Sharunas Bartas — a Lithuanian avant-garde filmmaker, one of the core persons of the neo-modernist trend in contemporary art cinema. There and back : the war path of father Rafał Woźniak

No full text
The author presents the military service of Father Rafał Woźniak, who in the years 1914-1916 travelled the whole length of Galicia and neighbouring countries as a chaplain of field hospital. The literature has already given credit to his role as monastery chronicler, however his diary from the Great War does not seem to have met with historians’ interest, although it renders well the experience of a young chaplain who, working at the rear, had to face the impact of the war: death, diseases, suffering, hardships of continued marching and changeable weather. The author has tried to reconstruct Father Woźniak’s trail and answer the question, what helped him survive the shock of the outbreak of the war, direct exposure to war hardships and above all, the long and tedious months of the turmoils of war

The latest monograph by Rafał Kubicki, a medievalist from Gdańsk, is devoted - generally speaking - to rural areas in the state of the Teutonic Order. In this synthetic approach, the author draws on a rich tradition of research into the development of settlements, rural society, production relations and the organisation of agriculture, breeding and cultivation etc. in the territory in question. It is worth adding that this is not his first research expedition to the Prussian countryside under rule of Teutonic Order: in 2012 his habilitation on milling in the Teutonic Order's state from the 13th to the mid-15th century was published. Similar topics are also taken up by Rafał Kubicki's students: in 2022, at the University of Gdańsk, a dissertation was defended entitled "Komturstwo Tucholskie (1330-1454). Space-economy-society', written by Grzegorz Woliński. [...
