High-resolution resonant photoemission study of the 4f states in a typical Kondo system: CePd3

    No full text
We exploited resonant photoemission at the Ce 4d --> 4f absorption edge to investigate the Ce 4f states in CePd3. High resolution spectra reveal, near the Fermi level, the characteristic fine structure of intermediate valence Ce compounds. The spectral lineshape is consistent with the typical "Kondo" character of CePd, but the prominent (f(0)) ionization peak is found at the unusually low binding energy of 1 eV. We briefly discuss the implications of these observations.LSELPRXEcole Polytech Fed Lausanne, Inst Phys Appl, CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland. Univ H Poincare, F-54506 Vandoeuvre Nancy, France. Band discontinuity fluctuations and local chemistry at the GaSe-Si interface

Photoemission spectromicroscopy data on Si-GaSe with 0.2 mu m lateral resolution revealed laterally inhomogeneous interface Se-Si chemical reactions. The local Si 2p fits agrees with interface Si selenide parameters; the Se 3d peaks indicate a Si-selenide component; the Ga 3d peaks exhibit a metallic component whose intensity increases with Si coverage. This local interface reaction is related to lateral changes in the band lineup. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. The PDT activity of free and pegylated pheophorbide a against an amelanotic melanoma transplanted in C57/BL6 mice.

Pheophorbide a (Pba) is a chlorophyll catabolite that has been proposed as photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy. In a previous study we conjugated Pba to monomethoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG-Pba), to increase its solubility and pharmacokinetics. Here, we compare the photodynamic therapy efficacy of free Pba and mPEG-Pba to cure a subcutaneous amelanotic melanoma transplanted in C57/BL6 mice. The photosensitizers, i.p. injected (30 mg/kg), showed no toxicity when the animals were kept in the dark. But, after photoactivation with a 660 nm laser (fluence of 193 J/cm(2)), both photosensitizers, in particular mPEG-Pba, showed a strong efficacy to cure the tumor, both in terms of tumor growth delay and increase of Kaplan-Meier median survival time. Together, our in vivo data demonstrate that mPEG-conjugated Pba is a promising photosensitizer for the photodynamic therapy of cancer
