    X-ray absorption study of the solvation structure of Cu 2+ in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide

    The solvation structure of Cu2+ in methanol (MeOH) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been determined by studying both the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) regions of the K-edge absorption spectra. The EXAFS technique has been found to provide a very accurate determination of the next-neighbor coordination distances, but it is inconclusive in the determination of the coordination numbers and polyhedral environment. Conversely, quantitative analysis of the XANES spectra unambiguously shows the presence of an average 5-fold coordination in both the MeOH and DMSO solution, ruling out the usually proposed octahedral Jahn–Teller distorted geometry. The EXAFS and XANES techniques provide coherent values of the Cu–O first-shell distances that are coincident in the two solvents. This investigation shows that the combined analysis of the EXAFS and XANES data allows a reliable determination of the structural properties of electrolyte solutions, which is very difficult to achieve with other experimental techniques

    Influence of the Second Coordination Shell on the XANES Spectra of the Zn2+ Ion in Water and Methanol

    A quantitative analysis of the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of the Zn2+ ion in methanol and aqueous solution has been carried out starting from the microscopic description of the systems derived from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The different sensitivity of XANES towards the second-shell solvent molecules in the two solvents has been highlighted: in methanol solution, the Zn2+ second solvation shell was found to provide a negligible contribution to the XANES spectrum, and it has been possible to reproduce the experimental data using a single coordination sphere in the calculation. Conversely, a reliable reproduction of the experimental spectrum of Zn2+ in aqueous solution could be obtained only by including the second-shell water molecules in the calculation. The combination of MD and XANES was found to be essential to evaluate the contribution of the ion second solvation shell to the XANES spectra of a metal ion in organic solvents

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A novel electrochemical flow-cell for operando XAS investigations in X-ray opaque supports

    Improvement of electrochemical technologies is one of the most popular topics in the field of renewable energy. However, this process requires a deep understanding of the electrode-electrolyte interface behavior under operando conditions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is widely employed to characterize electrode materials, providing element-selective oxidation state and local structure. Several existing cells allow studies as close as possible to realistic operating conditions, but most of them rely on the deposition of the electrodes on conductive and X-ray transparent materials, from where the radiation impinges the sample. In this work, we present a new electrochemical flow-cell for operando XAS that can be used with X-ray opaque substrates, since the signal is effectively detected from the electrode surface, as the radiation passes through a thin layer of electrolyte (∼17 μm). The electrolyte can flow over the electrode, reducing bubble formation and avoiding strong reactant concentration gradients. We show that high-quality data can be obtained under operando conditions, thanks to the high efficiency of the cell from the hard X-ray regime down to ∼4 keV. We report as a case study the operando XAS investigation at the Fe and Ni K-edges on Ni-doped γ-Fe2O3 films, epitaxially grown on Pt substrates. The effect of the Ni content on the catalytic performances for the oxygen evolution reaction is discussed. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    Revised Ionic Radii of Lanthanoid(III) Ions in Aqueous Solution

    A new set of ionic radii in aqueous solution has been derived for lanthanoid(III) cations starting from a very accurate experimental determination of the ion–water distances obtained from extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data. At variance with previous results, a very regular trend has been obtained, as expected for this series of elements. A general procedure to compute ionic radii in solution by combining the EXAFS technique and molecular dynamics (MD) structural data has been developed. This method can be applied to other ions allowing one to determine ionic radii in solution with an accuracy comparable to that of the Shannon crystal ionic radii
