A Relevance-theoretic Perspective on Metonymy
No full textAbstractThe aim of this paper is to analyse metonymies from a relevance-theoretic perspective. Metonymy has been considered as an association process between contiguous items within the same cognitive domain or as involving a meaning transfer between properties. These approaches, however, prove inadequate in offering a complete account. I will argue that metonymies are used as reference tools to refer to individuals or objects lying outside their linguistically-specified denotation. I will outline how the intended referent might be identified by the property the speaker singles out for the hearer to focus on. Finally, different metonymic uses in communication will be analysed

No full textDuring the nineteenth century the Spanish mineralogists performed studies from mineralogical, geological, mining and historical points of view, but a general topographical mineralogy wasn't published. In 1910 Salvador Calderón published "Minerales de España", the first book of this type in our country. Its publication was delayed more than a decade for several reasons after the author wrote the first version. This book represents a milestone in Spanish mineralogy, and has been the standard work for over a century.Durante el siglo XIX se fueron desarrollando estudios sobre la mineralogía española desde distintos puntos de vista, mineralógico, geológico, minero histórico, pero sin que se llevara a cabo una revisión de conjunto. En 1910 se publicó el libro Los Minerales de España, de Salvador Calderón, la primera mineralogía topográfica de conjunto de nuestro país. A framework for sign language recognition using support vector machines and active learning for skin segmentation and boosted temporal sub-units
No full textThis dissertation describes new techniques that can be used in a sign language recognition (SLR) system, and more generally in human gesture systems. Any SLR system consists of three main components: Skin detector, Tracker, and Recognizer. The skin detector is responsible for segmenting skin objects like the face and hands from video frames. The tracker keeps track of the hand location (more specifically the bounding box) and detects any occlusions that might happen between any skin objects. Finally, the recognizer tries to classify the performed sign into one of the sign classes in our vocabulary using the set of features and information provided by the tracker.
In this work, we propose a new technique for skin segmentation using SVM (support vector machine) active learning combined with region segmentation information. Having segmented the face and hands, we need to track them across the frames. So, we have developed a unified framework for segmenting and tracking skin objects and detecting occlusions, where both components of segmentation and tracking help each other. Good tracking helps to reduce the search space for skin objects, and accurate segmentation increases the overall tracker accuracy.
Instead of dealing with the whole sign for recognition, the sign can be broken down into elementary subunits, which are far less in number than the total number of signs in the vocabulary. This motivated us to propose a novel algorithm to model and segment these subunits, then try to learn the informative combinations of subunits/features using a boosting framework. Our results reached above 90% recognition rate using very few training samples
Experimental verification of extraordinary transmission without surface plasmons

waveguide system loaded with an electrically small diaphragm. This is a situation where the
standard surface plasmon polariton SPP theory does not apply. The theoretical explanation is then
based on the concept of impedance matching. This concept has previously been applied by some of
the authors to account for enhanced transmission in situations where surface plasmon theory can be
used: periodic arrays of small holes or slits in flat metal screens. The experiment in this letter
supports the impedance matching model, valid for when SPPs are present or not. © 2009 American
