Between Images and Words : Ruan Guang-min's Railway Sonata and its Journey from Chinese to Italian
No full textAlthough overshadowed by the popularity of Japanese manga, Taiwanese comics (or manhua, as they are known in Chinese) are experiencing a true golden age both domestically and abroad, as proven by the numerous international awards received by local artists, as well as the translations of their works into several languages. Ruan Guang-min (1971-) represents a paradigmatic example of how an author whose comics are culture-specific has managed to transcend both geographical (Taiwan) and linguistic (Sinophone) boundaries. After briefly contextualizing the current situation of Taiwanese comics and presenting Ruan and his oeuvre, the contribution analyzes the Italian translation of Railway Sonata, primarily drawing on Klaus Kaindl's studies on comics translation and Lucía Molina and Amparo Hurtado Albir's research on the translation of culturemes, or culture-specific elements. More specifically, the article focuses on the rendition of linguistic messages integrated into the images, of elements with strong sociocultural connotations, and of orality. This study reveals that techniques such as repetitio + adiectio were employed for text embedded in images, where the original language and script are preserved in the translation, accompanied by the translator's notes. Additionally, different strategies were used for culture-specific items. Given the absence of research on Taiwanese manhua and on comics translation from Chinese into Italian, this exploratory study aims at providing a steppingstone for future research in said fields
Of Grocery Stores and Barbershops: Slices of Taiwan in Ruan Guang-min's Manhua
No full textAlthough not as popular as Japanese manga, Taiwanese comics, known as manhua, are an important cultural product, which is being promoted both locally and internationally through several governmental initiatives. Ruan Guang-min is among the most wellknown contemporary manhua artists, the author of many graphic narratives that circulate domestically and, through translation, abroad too. The main characteristic of his oeuvre is that it is often set in the rural milieu, and it nostalgically reflects on the simplicity of small-town life. In this paper, I will focus on two of his works, namely The Grocery Store and Dong Hua Chun Barbershop, paying special attention to some of their cultural-specific features. Through an analysis of the two manhua, my aim is to show that the Taiwanese elements in Ruan's graphic narratives can be perceived differently depending on the readers' background: for local readers they have a nostalgic and sentimental impact, while for foreign audiences they represent a window to Taiwanese society and culture

The article reviews developments in respect of information disclosure in South Africa and other countries and discusses the effects of the LRA in regard to disclosure of information to trade unions and workplace forums. It then describes a study conducted by the author and discusses the findings. It concludes with pointing out certain shortcomings in the disclosure process and urges managements and the trade unions to work together to improve this important tool for achieving success in organisations and enhancing industrial democracy
Yangzhou School—the Elite of Qian-jia Scholarship: Ruan Yuan’s Achievements in Confucian Classics and the Reconstruction of Confucian Ethics
No full text[[abstract]]乾嘉學術在考據學和義理學兩方面均有突出表現，揚州學術則以其博通和創新的精神，對此二者皆有優異表現與開拓；阮元又是揚州學者中兼有考據與義理成就者，是以本文藉為線索，希冀通過對揚州學派和乾嘉學術的共同學風、但未必是當時普遍風趨的學術考察，論證揚州學派是為乾嘉學術的重要內容。本文論述架構，第一節先在「乾嘉學術」、「揚州學派」、「阮元」三者間建立起橋樑；第二節從「經部文獻之整理與保存」說明阮元對於乾嘉學術的貢獻；第三節說明阮元在訓詁學上對乾嘉學術的推進，包括語源學之「義從音生」、名物考證與古籍辨正、金石學三小節；第四節闡明阮元對「乾嘉新義理學」之繼續深化，包括阮元之道器觀、節性說、「相人偶」仁論三小節，最後次以結論，期於略見揚州學術和乾嘉考據學、新義理學的關係樣貌。[[abstract]]Qian-jia scholarship excelled both in textology and Confucian philosophy where Yangzhou scholarship developed both learnings in the spirit of great erudition and innovation. Ruan Yuan was among the top Yangzhou scholars in both textology and Confucian philosophy. Based on the premise, the author presents Yangzhou school as the essential elements in Qian-jia scholarship while investigates the common style of Yangzhou school and Qian-jia scholarship. However, the style was not particularly prevalent at the time. The argument starts off by building bridges among “Qian-jia scholarship,” “Yangzhou school” and “Ruan Yuan” in section 1; section 2 describes Ruan Yuan’s contribution to Qian-jia scholarship with his “collections and preservations of classic literatures”; section 3 depicts Ruan Yuan’s achievements promoting Qian-jia scholarship in Chinese semantics which include “meanings derived from pronunciation” in etymology, verification of terms, proofreading of ancient books and epigraphy; section 4 illustrates the increasing depth of Ruan Yuan’s “Neo-Confucian philosophy” which consists of Ruan Yuan’s Taoist concepts of wares, controlling of desires, “mutual respect” in Confucian ethics (theory of ren) and conclusion. It is intended to have a glimpse at the relations among Yangzhou school, Qian-jia textology and Neo-Confucian philosophy

Design of optimal investment policy for influence systems and online learning for job scheduling
No full textThis thesis contains two main research thrusts, one related to the design of optimal investment policies for influence systems and the other related to online learning for job scheduling on heterogeneous machines.
In Chapter 2, a continuous-time influence system on social networks is considered, where the goal is to decide on how to allocate a limited amount of budget over a finite time horizon in order to control the opinion of social entities towards a specific objective. Describing the model under continuous-time settings, it is shown that even under the simplistic case of one marketer and one social entity, the optimal strategy may not exist without any assumption on the number of investment switches. Several sufficient conditions are then developed, which guarantee the existence of an optimal policy. Subsequently, the structure of the optimal policy under some special cases are characterized.
In Chapter 3, a new model for online job scheduling on heterogeneous machines is developed. In that model, the goal is to schedule a sequence of arriving jobs on a set of heterogeneous machines in an online fashion with the overall quality of service as close as possible to an optimal offline benchmark. However, in practice, each machine may have an unknown different power/energy budget, and its welfare is proportional to the product of its power and its cumulative utilities. The goal is to minimize the regret, that is, the expected difference between the total quality of service (i.e., the sum of all the machines’ welfare) obtained by the algorithm and its maximum value had we known the power budgets a priori. First, it is shown that a simple Explore-then-Exploit scheduling algorithm achieves a sub-linear regret of O(T^{2/3}), where T is the total number of jobs.
