Still Reading Mishra…This Time on Yu Hua
Just over a year ago, in one of the first posts that appeared on this site (and one of the very first commentaries I had written for any blog), I directed readers to five short pieces worth checking out that had one thing in common: they were about China but not by China specialists per se. One was a London Review of Books essay by Pankaj Mishra, who we’ve gone on to link to or quote often and who will be represented in our China in 2008: A Year of Great Significance, via a commentary on Tibet that first appeared on The Guardian’s lively and wide-ranging “Comment is Free” site. Now, in today’s New York Times Sunday Magazinehe has yet another piece likely to interest readers of this blog, which focuses mainly on the novelist Yu Hua (still best-known in the West as the author of To Live, which became a Zhang Yimou film), but features a cameo appearance by historian and “new left” cultural critic Wang Hui.
Since the LRB essay alluded to above was devoted largely to Wang Hui (a close friend of Yu Hua’s), this latest publication of Mishra’s (which has the catchy title of “The Bonfire of China’s Vanities”) can be read as a kind of more literary-minded sequel to that earlier overview of intellectuals trends in the PRC. It is also interesting for what Yu Hua has to say to Mishra about various issues “China Beat” has addressed before, from the legacy of 1989 to recent upsurges in virulent nationalism.
Readers who come away from “Bonfire of China’s Vanities” wanting to know more about Yu Hua or Wang Hui might want to turn to the following readings: a New Left Review essay on Dushu, the periodical that Wang formerly edited, and thisinterview with Yu Hua. Better still, there are Yu Hua’s fictional works. I’ve just begun to read around in these, starting with the widely varied tales (there’s even one that plays with the convention of martial arts magical sword stories) collected in The Past and the Punishments: Eight Stories, which comes with a valuable translator’s afterword by Andrew F. Jones that puts the works and the author into context. An interesting discussion of contemporary youthful nationalism to place beside the comments in Mishra’s piece is this Evan Osnos New Yorker article to which we’ve directed readers before

Rendering Reality in the novel The Seventh Day by Yu Hua
This bachelor thesis focuses on the novel The Seventh Day (2013) written by contemporary Chinese author Yu Hua (* 1960). The novel imaginatively reflects the situation in contemporary Chinese society and draws attention to many problems of today's China. In the novel Yu Hua uses an innovative way of narration: the narrator and the main protagonist of the story is Yang Fei, who after his death travels around the Land of the Unburied for seven days. Although the author uses some experimental techniques to depict reality, the novel also shows several similarities with traditional Chinese novels of the late Qing dynasty. The novel is thoroughly analysed and introduced in literary historical context. Focus of the analysis is on rendering reality of this novel and on other meaning-making elements, which decisively determine the nature of the literary image of contemporary China, such as the religious motifs of the work, the use of supernatural elements or the motifs of grotesque and farce

Letteratura
Yu Hua, La Ville introuvable (Wencheng)

A Rehabilitation of Male Subjectivity in the Fiction Of Yu Hua
This thesis concerns male subjectivity as it is treated in the fiction of Yu Hua. In the first instance, its purpose is to reevaluate how male subjectivity is to be understood in Yu Hua\u27s early avant-garde short stories in light of his later realist novels. It is divided into an introduction, including connotations and implications of (male)subjectivity in modern China, as well as a brief summary of intellectual and literary trends of the 1980s in China, and then two chapters of analysis, and a conclusion. The first chapter is an analysis of Yu Hua\u27s short story Blood and Plum Blossoms . Lacanian psychoanalytic techniques are used to critically evaluate the psychology of Yu Hua\u27s male protagonist and discover what renders him incapable of subjective agency. What the analysis will reveal is how the central most impediment to male subjectivity is a traditional patriarchal familial structure that renders male subjectivity an impossibility unless the male subject should engage in the same logic of oppression used against it. In the second chapter, an analysis of Yu Hua\u27s realist novel, Chronicle of a Blood Merchant, is done that looks at how Yu Hua creates a new male protagonist. This character\u27s familial ontology and history will be shown to have been fundamentally rewritten and enable a new male subjectivity to be formed based on the male subject\u27s egalitarian engagement with his family. A modified Oedipal complex that Chen Jianguo articulates as the Symbolic order that operates in World like Mist, will be refuted in place of new phallic signifiers that engender an anti-oppressive familial structure
The economic aspects of development of China reflected in modern Chinese literature (“Ten words about China” for Yu Hua)
The article discusses the development of the Chinese economy in recent years, which are presented in the book Yu Hua “Ten words about China”. The author tried to find the brightest points of contact of the Chinese economy and literature. The work is autobiographical, which, in turn, is reflected in the language constructs of Yu Hua. The author believes that the phenomenon of “Chinese economic miracle” was clearly reflected in the present work
