Beyond sound effects: Designing sound for the American theatre in the 1970s

This dissertation investigates the engagement between American theatre and sound reproduction technologies in the 1970s. Through an analysis of Abe Jacob’s sound design for Broadway and productions created by experimental theatre practitioners such as Robert Wilson, Richard Foreman, and the Wooster Group, I explore how these productions extended formal theatre sound design practice in response to the advent of the recording and reproduction technologies, from microphones, loudspeakers, phonograph, tape recorders, and later digital computers. Although live theatre never had the resources to invest in technical research projects, it was very adept at adapting the latest innovations from other fields. I contend that the development of sound technologies not only shaped the formal innovations in electronic music composition, recordings, radio, and film, but that it compelled theatre artists to incorporate sound as a constituent part of the overall scenography. Tracing the way the sound was dramatized and staged, each chapter sounds out a pairing of the changes in design processes alongside the new approaches to the practice of listening and sound making in the age of mechanical and electronic (re)production: namely, Abe Jacob’s rock and roll sound system and Broadway’s mediatic resistance; Robert Wilson’s auditory landscape and sound event; Richard Foreman’s use of a tape machine to create sound objects; and the Wooster Group’s use of sound to foreground different modes of listening. The conclusion reflects upon my own sound design for Ping Chong and encapsulates the influences of sound technologies on theatre discussed in previous chapters. While the discourse of theatre sound is mostly comprised of step-by-step sound design instructional textbooks, this dissertation focuses not only on the type and variety of sounds made but also the artistic rationale behind the creative process by combining analyses of dramatic texts, production history, newspaper reviews, interviews and video recordings. Even though these new practices of sound in theatre were driven by sound technologies, this study reveals that the artistic rationale behind the creative process played an important role in transforming the technology to meet the needs of the production. Ultimately, by providing an account that interrelates the development of sound technology with its users from different artistic fields, this dissertation demonstrates the importance of sound in theatre and opens up the approaches to designing sound beyond its causal and semantic strictures of sound effect.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2020-12-01The student, Yu-Yun Hsieh, accepted the attached license on 2018-08-02 at 23:24.The student, Yu-Yun Hsieh, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2018-08-02 at 23:33.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2018-08-06 at 09:32.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12964 on 2019-02-08 at 11:37:32Made available in DSpace on 2019-02-08T18:39:37Z (GMT). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

[[abstract]] Desire is a native instinct of human being, the beginning of human civilization; as a result, desire can’t be concealed. To manage desire and not to be controlled by it, turning desire into the foundation of life achievement, we must strive against selfish desire, exploring authentic value of self-existence, pouring meaning into our lives. The entire essay is mainly about living experience and life interpretation of the author, involving self-exploring and conception of modern society phenomenon, expressing by 3D sculpture, exploring personal creation style and life meaning. The essay is based on historical research method, learning the influence of the historical background to artists, to analyze the formation of unique creation style of artists. Afterwards, integrating Eastern and Western philosophy by induction, the essay explores another aspect under appearance, and learning the application of techniques in works. Action research method and quality reflection method controll the whole creation process. From the beginning of the creation to the completion of the work, the progress is filled with continuous progress, destruction, refletion and re-creation, only to make the work present with higher quality. Verified by both theory and creation, we can gain new creation notion, reasonably proofing this essay. The essay is composed of three serious of works, permanence, motive force and heart, analyzing the author’s viewpoints of self-existence and life value, through the transformation of the image, expressing the personal perception of the value of life, using different media to rich the inner meaning of creation, developing unlimited potential and prospect of creation

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
