The art of preluding, with a focus on Johann Baptist Cramer's collections of 1818 and 1839

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to reintroduce today’s pianists to the antiquated concept of preluding. To that end, this essay explores two little-known sets of preludes by the nineteenth-century composer Johann Baptist Cramer, the Twenty-Six Preludes or Short Introductions in the Principal Major and Minor Keys for the Piano Forte (1818) and Pensière Musicale, Thirty-Six Préludes Mélodique ou pensées musicales en forme de cadences, improvisations et caprice pour piano, Op. 91 (1839). A history of the prelude for keyboard precedes a stylistic investigation of representative preludes from Cramer’s collections. By analyzing Cramer’s preludes, focusing mainly on structure, harmonic progressions, and various figuration, this study provides a framework for today’s pianist learning how to construct a prelude in this style.U of I Only Restriction set for Item 114559 on 2020-05-06T19:21:24Z with date by [email protected] of I Only Restriction set for Item 114559 on 2020-05-06T19:41:19Z with date by [email protected] by David Butler ([email protected]) on 2020-05-06T19:42:39Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Yu Ying Lee_Thesis.pdf: 64212017 bytes, checksum: 424ee598d6fb202df05d1f3d9e12b33d (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-05-06T19:42:39Z (GMT). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Examination of Yu Ying-shi’s criticism of Max Weber’s view of China

This article is an examination of Yu Ying-shi’s The Religious Ethic and the Spirit of Merchants in Modern China,a criticism of Max Weber’s view of China, from the standpoint of research sympathetic to Max Weber.Weber described Confucianism as “adjustment to the world”,while Puritanism as “transformation of the world” and “inner-worldly asceticism”.But Yu regards newer forms of Confucianism as “transformation of the world” and “inner-worldly asceticism”,not “adjustment to the world”.The idea that the newer forms of Confucianism contained a positive attitude toward the world is correct. However, these newer types of Confucianism should be considered as “inner-worldly mysticism”,which Weber found in Mahayana Buddhism,Lao-tzu,and others.Yu seems not to be considering the whole framework of Weber’s sociology of religion, where individual religions are placed relatively in his whole view of the religions of the world. Moreover, this article demonstrates that Yu misunderstood Weber’s view of the contrast between Calvinism and Lutheranism. This contrast is of essential importance for an understanding of Weber’s “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism”.departmental bulletin pape
