Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Motivation & purpose: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health problem. Kidney disease affects more than 750 million people worldwide and has been the top ten causes of death in the world in recent years. CKD may lead to impaired renal function, it is difficult to detect and easy to be delay at the important time for relieving symptoms, leading to life-long dialysis, or waiting for kidney transplantation, which makes the patient feel inconvenient in life. Due to the current clinical diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, almost are invasive or the drugs applied to the body are harmful to the human body, which causes the patients' willingness to diagnose. In this case, there is a lack of using non-invasive methods for the detection and timely diagnosis of CKD. Therefore, we are committed to developing a simple, specific, low-cost, and sensitive biosensor to detect early chronic kidney disease. Methods: In this study, we chose cystatin C (CST 3) as a biomarker for detecting renal function. By preparing a painless micro-invasive hydrogel microneedle for extracting interstitial fluid of the skin and combining it with a paper-based test strip, the CST 3 rapid detection is performed. First, the CST 3 antibody was modified on the gold nanoparticle, then AbCST 3 and goat anti-rabbit was coated on the nitrocellulose membrane of the strip, and finally, the microneedle of the extracted skin interstitial fluid was transferred to the strip. The system will capture the CST 3 protein by means of lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (LFIA). Finally, we can directly observe whether there are lines on the test line for CKD risk assessment. Results: In this study, we developed a LFIA combined with a micro-invasive hydrogel microneedle patch to diagnose whether the concentration of CST 3 is in the high-risk range, through Fourier infrared spectroscopy, extract fluorescent protein and mechanical strength. Successfully confirmed the crosslinking of the hydrogel microneedles, the ability to extract protein, and the mechanical strength to insert into the skin. In addition, animal experiments are also used to perform CST 3 rapid detection through microneedle and strips. The results measured in the skin interstitial fluid of rats that induce CKD will show two test lines (T1 and T2) and a control line on the strip, representing the concentration of CST 3 in CKD mice is indeed significantly improved. This result has also been confirmed by enzyme-binding immunosorbent assay (ELISA). This detection platform will have the opportunity to be used in home or designated care for CKD risk assessment in the future

Development of rocket-Like long-acting microneedle patch for hormone therapy in prostate cancer

Motivation & Purpose: Prostate cancer is one of the ten most common cancers among Chinese men, and the moRhBidity and mortality rate will increase with age. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of deaths from prostate cancer in the Republic of China in 107, and the number of deaths from prostate cancer in the Republic of China in 2008 was 1,377. Totaly death was 1,538, ranking fourth among the top of ten cancers in Taiwan. At present ,prostate cancer patients need to accept the hormonal therapy ,and it has to go to the hospital for injections or oral anti-androgen drugs on a regular basis. However, the pain and time spent during injection are the main reasons for the decline in patient compliance. In order to improve this situation, the design of this paper has developed a Rocket-Like Microneedles system. It is hoped that the Rocket-Like Microneedles system can be used as a painless, convenient, and simple operation. Be a new hormonal treatment option. Methods: In order to develop the Rocket-Like Microneedles system, first of all, it is necessary to develop a hydrogel capable of carrying long-acting androgen-inhibiting drugs and slowly release. Therefore, we modify the functional groups of sodium alginate salt , and then test the degree of cross-linking and actual release time. During the test, pay attention to whether the gel parameters can make the hydrogel in microneedles. In addition, the development of zeolitic imidazolate framework equipped with short-acting androgen receptor-inhibiting drugs focuses on its release rate, biocompatibility and effectiveness. After the two materials have been developed as microneedle raw materials, the two materials will be assembled into Rocket-Like Microneedles system Next, the mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and effectiveness of the microneedles were tested. Results: The Rocket-Like Microneedles is composed of two different materials. They are the long-acting layer-hydrogel of the needle tip and the adjacent short-acting layer-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework The purpose of this design is to dissolve and release the free radical zeolitic imidazolate framework into the skin after the short-acting layer is pierced into the skin; while the hydrogel of the long-acting layer can ensure that it stays in the body and does not remain in the microneedles. After testing the properties of the materials in vitro, they were assembled into microneedles and finally applianced at animals to prove their effectiveness

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
