Roy Andersson and the Lengthy-Long-Shot-Scene (LLSS) Technique of Filmmaking “An Analytical Descriptive Study”

    No full text
Since cinema was transformed into a creation medium able to express the film director's vision and philosophy, rules for employing different shot sizes in presenting the story and exploring scenes components were founded. The long shot size had been merited with its ability to present facts and reality without interfering. It was used ever since to establish the location of every film scene, and only few filmmakers managed to creatively employ the long shot in the formulation of visual texts. One of those creative filmmakers is the Swedish director “Roy Andersson” with his Lengthy-Long-Shot-Scene (LLSS) cinematic technique, i.e. the technique of using only one single lengthy long shot in shooting the film scene… Through an analytical descriptive methodology, this study attempted to study Roy Andersson's unique Lengthy-Long-Shot-Scene (LLSS) technique of filmmaking, and looked at the ability of such technique in enriching the film language. Research results emphasized that we cannot limit the film industry and define it in a specific template! In cinema, there is a wide field for creativity that is not limited by borders, and there are multiple film methods, whether through regular well-established conventions or through new experimental methodologies like the (LLSS) style

Watching Ramadan Drama and Egyptians’ Preference for Video Streaming Services Over Traditional Television: A Survey Study

Every year throughout the holy month of Ramadan, Egyptians regularly watch television dramas. Viewership reaches its peak during Ramadan, and as a result, Ramadan drama is considered to have a great cultural and social impact on Egyptian society. Moreover, during Ramadan, video streaming services become more popular in Egypt and achieve greater success in terms of subscription rates. Therefore, this study focused on investigating the reasons why Egyptians prefer video streaming services over traditional television to watch Ramadan dramas and the impact of such services on their watching behaviors. An online questionnaire survey was circulated to a sample of Egyptian people, and 563 participants of different ages and backgrounds participated in the survey. The critical evaluation of the collected data showed how significantly the Egyptian people are affected by Ramadan drama and the extent to which it is an important part of their lives. The data also highlight that video streaming services offer many advantages over traditional television. Likewise, the study provided valuable insights into the changes occurring in Egyptians’ viewing behaviors. It was concluded that Egyptian viewers prefer video streaming services over traditional television when watching Ramadan dramas for many reasons.Non

Filmmaking As Self-Expression Investigating Different Social and Cultural Influences on Saudi Cinematic-Arts Students Productions

Research on media consumption has clearly demonstrated the significance of movies in people lives. However, there is a dearth of research on youth making movies and how they view the films made by other young people. The main conclusions of a research project on the use of filmmaking for young people's communication and self-expression are compiled in this research paper. The approach used in this study was to let young students express themselves through their own media projects and share their work with other students in order to gain insights into their opinions and viewpoints. The researcher is a professor of filmmaking at Effat University in Saudi Arabia, and the research was carried out at the Cinematic Arts department of the Faculty of Architecture and Design. The researcher taught 21 young Saudi students from various socioeconomic backgrounds how to make short films during a level-3 film production course that took place over one academic semester. The students worked in groups to design, shoot and edit eight short films covering various topics. A sample of 17 teenagers representing the students in other academic levels were then shown the investigated film productions. After watching the films, the audiences' feedback and reactions to each production were observed and analyzed. The young filmmakers were exposed afterwards to the remarks left by the audiences, and their responses were also examined and analyzed. The study managed to show the impact of different social and cultural factors on Saudi cinematic-arts students’ film productions, and eventually a group of valuable recommendations related to the investigated research topic were generated.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
