He states that he was significantly influenced by the works of writers such as Taha Hussein and Al-Manfaluti, and was devoted to literary writing ever since. Adapting authoritarianism: institutions and co-optation in Egypt and Syria
This PhD thesis compares Egypt and Syria’s authoritarian political systems. While the tendency in social science political research treats Egypt and Syria as similarly authoritarian, this research emphasizes differences between the two systems with special reference to institutions and co-optation. Rather than reducibly understanding Egypt and Syria as sharing similar histories, institutional arrangements, or ascribing to the oft-repeated convention that “Syria is Egypt but 10 years behind,” this thesis focuses on how events and individual histories shaped each states current institutional strengthens and weaknesses. Specifically, it explains the how varying institutional politicization or de-politicization affects each state’s capabilities for co-opting elite and non-elite individuals.
Beginning with a theoretical framework that considers the limited utility of democratization and transition theoretical approaches, the work underscores the persistence and durability of authoritarianism. Chapter two details the politicized institutional divergence between Egypt and Syria that began in the 1970s. Chapter three and four examines how institutional politicization or de-politicization affects elite and non-elite individual co-optation in Egypt and Syria. Chapter five discusses the study’s general conclusions and theoretical implications.
This thesis’s argument is that Egypt and Syria co-opt elites and non-elites differently because of the varying degrees of institutional politicization in each governance system. Rather than view one country as more politically developed than the other, this work argues that Syria’s political institutions are more politicized than their Egyptian counterparts. Syria’s political arena is, thus, described as politicized-patrimonialism. Syria’s politicized-patrimonial arena produces uneven co-optation of elites and non-elites as they are diffused through competing institutions. Conversely, the Egyptian political arena remains highly personalized as weak institutions and individuals are manipulated and molded according to the president’s ruling clique. This is referred to as personalized-patrimonialism. As a consequence, Egypt’s political establishment demonstrates more flexibility in ad hoc altering and adapting its arena depending on the emergence of crises.
This study’s theoretical implications suggest that, contrary to modernization and democratization theory’s adage that institutions lead to a political development, politicized institutions within a patrimonial order actually hinder regime adaptation because consensus is harder to achieve and maintain. It is within this context that Egypt’s de-politicized institutional framework advantages its top political elite. In this reading of Egyptian and Syrian politics, Egypt’s personalized political arena is more adaptable than Syria’s. These conclusions do not indicate that political reform is a process underway in either state

Study the Design and Analysis of Al-Shuhadah Bridge and Analysis by Using Plaxis Program of Finite Elements
This paper is a studying on the Al-Shuhadah Bridge lies in the Muthanna province south of Iraq, including the soil investigation taken from the project and analysis for the designed bridge firstly manually by using equations 1 and 2 according to the data provided, secondly by using three dimensional Plaxis program of finite elements. The settlement calculated by the above two ways is nearly similar and considered reasonable values compared with the allowable settlement according to Skempton and McDonald (1956) limitations for maximum settlement and maximum angular distortion. The bearing capacity of the bridge also calculated by using equation 3 and the value is larger than the applied load due to the effect of truck loading, while the study found that the bridge is not suitable to carry the dynamic loads due to the effect of train action; therefore, this bridge is used for the highway only and can success for this purpose.</jats:p
Dynamic Response of Bridge-Ship Collision Considering Pile-Soil Interaction
According to most countries’ norms, and to find the effect of the bridge collision the equivalent static method was designed for bridge-ship collision, ignoring the dynamic effects of shocks. It is sharply different from actual situation. So based on the theory of Winkler foundation, shearing strain theory of Timoshenko and potential energy variation functional principle of Hamilton, the simulation models of bridge piers was built considering the pile–soil interaction. Lateral transient vibration equation of bridge piers was concluded. Based on the theory of integral transform, the differential equation of the collision system and the boundary conditions were transformed with Laplace transformation; the analytical solution of the stress wave in frequency domain was concluded. And then the inversion of solution in frequency domain was carried out using Matlab based on the Crump inverse transformation. Finally the dynamic response law of displacement, normal stress and the shear stress of bridge piers were obtained.</jats:p

The effect of exercises by using VertiMax device in the development of explosive strength and defensive blocking for handball players
This study aims to prepare special exercises using VertiMax device and to identify the effect of these exercises on the explosive strength and defensive blocking of senior handball players. The researchers have adopted the experimental approach, and the case study is identified by the senior handball players of Al- Dagharah handball club whose number is 16, and their lengths ranged (182.4 ± 3.282 cm), weights (82 ± 4.387 kg) and ages (23 ± 1.846 years). They are divided by a simple random method into two groups by (8) players per group in which the experimental group has used exercise by VertiMax device, while the control group has used team coach exercises. The researchers have conducted the explosive strength and defensive blocking tests of the study sample. The training method has included 3 units per week for a period of 6 weeks using the method of high-intensity interval training. The results of the explosive strength and defensive blocking tests have been presented and analysed. It is concluded that the exercises by using the VertiMax as auxiliary and effective devices can be relied upon in developing the explosive strength and defensive blocking of the handball

Gypseous soil improvement using fuel oil
This research investigates the suitability of fuel oil in improving gypseous soil. A detailed laboratory tests were carried-out on two soils (soil I with 51.6% gypsum content, and soil II with 26.55%), where the two soils were obtained from Al-Therthar site (Al-Anbar Province-Iraq). This study examines the improvement of soil properties using the gypsum material is locally available and low cost to minimize the effect of moisture on these soils by using the fuel oil. Study was conducted on two models of the soil gypsum, from the Tharthar area. The first model was sandy and slimy contents of Gypsym (51.6%) and the second is clayey soil and the content of Gypsym is (26.55%). The program included tests measuring the permeability of soil and compressibility and their collapse properties. Have been found bearing shear strength of the soil and the amount of weight loss of fuel oil and the recession in the soil as a result of drying temperature (50oC) in addition to testing category. These tests have been conducted on the treated soil and untreated to observe the effect of soil treatment on the engineering properties when mixed with varying degrees of fuel oil with the equivalent of the water content. The results showed that fuel oil is a good article to modify the soil gypsum, in order to have improved the basic properties of the soil gypsum of collapsibility and permeability, which is one of the fundamental problems of the soil gypsum and retained soil by an appropriate amount of the durability of storytelling gives durable and bearing capacity for the soil enough to carry the weight of construction and access to sustainability of these soils are suitable for use is permitted in areas exposed to moisture.

Evaluation of Contaminated Water Treatment on the Durability of Steel Piles
The most common effluent created by the oil industry is oily wastewater. This produced water (PW) corrodes the steel piles in the infrastructure of bridges, which shortens their service life. It is important to remove organic content in PW to prevent this outcome. Samples from the Ahdab oil field were used in this study. Two catalysts were selected: zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) with photo presence as an energy source. The results were organic elimination of 96.4% and 93.4% using ZnO and TiO2, respectively. The experimental conditions were pH = 3 and an irradiation time of 120 min. Due to the ability of ZnO to adsorb high amounts of organic content from PW, there was an increased elimination of organic content. Hence, the maintenance of steel piles durability is a good alternative to approach the goals of this study. The results of the study demonstrated that the organic adsorption on a catalyst agent reinforced in nonappearance of radiation photo is insignificant
