Biotrickling Filtration for the Reduction of N2O Emitted during Wastewater Treatment: Results from a Long-Term In Situ Pilot-Scale Testing

    No full text
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are a major source of N2O, a potent greenhouse gas with 300 times higher global warming potential than CO2. Several approaches have been proposed for mitigation of N2O emissions from WWTPs and have shown promising yet only site-specific results. Here, self-sustaining biotrickling filtration, an end-of-the-pipe treatment technology, was tested in situ at a full-scale WWTP under realistic operational conditions. Temporally varying untreated wastewater was used as trickling medium, and no temperature control was applied. The off-gas from the covered WWTP aerated section was conveyed through the pilot-scale reactor, and an average removal efficiency of 57.9 ± 29.1% was achieved during 165 days of operation despite the generally low and largely fluctuating influent N2O concentrations (ranging between 4.8 and 96.4 ppmv). For the following 60-day period, the continuously operated reactor system removed 43.0 ± 21.2% of the periodically augmented N2O, exhibiting elimination capacities as high as 5.25 g N2O m-3·h-1. Additionally, the bench-scale experiments performed abreast corroborated the resilience of the system to short-term N2O starvations. Our results corroborate the feasibility of biotrickling filtration for mitigating N2O emitted from WWTPs and demonstrate its robustness toward suboptimal field operating conditions and N2O starvation, as also supported by analyses of the microbial compositions and nosZ gene profiles.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Sanitary Engineerin

Cyanidiophyceae in Iceland: Plastid rbcL gene elucidates origin and dispersal of extremophilic Galdieria sulphuraria and G. maxima (Galdieriaceae, Rhodophyta)

    No full text
The Cyanidiophyceae are a group of unicellular organisms that diverged from ancestral red algae around 1.3 billion years ago. Present-day species are restricted to hot springs and geothermal habitats from around the world. Because of discontinuous geothermal environments, the distribution patterns and dispersal modes of the cyanidiophycean species are poorly understood. Iceland is the third largest island in the Atlantic Ocean and has intense underground volcanic activity that generates broad hydrothermal areas with different ecological conditions that are excellent for thermoacidophilic microfloral development. We analyzed populations to address the Icelandic cyanidiophycean biodiversity and dispersal. A global rbcL phylogeny showed two main populations inhabiting Iceland, Galdieria sulphuraria and G. maxima. Their areas of distribution are not completely superimposed because they coexisted only in New Zealand, Kamchatka (Russia), Japan, and Iceland. Because of the strong monophyly of Icelandic species with Japanese and Russian species, we hypothesized an origin and dispersion of Icelandic G. suphuraria and G. maxima from northeastern Asia. On the basis of network analysis of rbcL haplotypes, it is likely that the southwestern region of Iceland is the diversity center of both G. sulphuraria and G. maxima

Conclusion Reference 국문요약MasterThis study makes to reduce a protein adsorption to the surface and obtain a high-yield product while we carry out the separation and extraction of protein. Adsorption of Protein, the most representative material among biomolecules, occurs at surface of membrane and disturbs efficient separation and extraction. To prevent the adsorption of protein, surface of membrane was modified into hydrophilic surface. In order to obtain hydrophilic surface, we used hydrophilic polysaccharide such as Pectin, Dextran, Hyaluronic acid and chitosan which is known a effective biomolecule's adsorption preventer. In order to enhance transmittance, we make membrane having a porous structure by using electrospinning. The modified surface of membrane was observed by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and AFM(Atomic Force Microscope) and concentration amounts and adsorption amounts of protein were measured by BCA(Bicinchoninic acid) assay. And ultrafiltration system was used to investigate water flow rate. And the hydrophilic group is introduced into polysaccharide layer. Through this study, the protein adsorption of surface coated by polysaccharide was affected by electrostatic property between protein and polysaccharide. And the higher hydrophilicity of surface coated by polysaccharide is, the lower adsorption ratio of protein is. Also the membrane introducing MPEG-COOH on chitosan layer have an excellent performance regarding prevention of protein adsorption. These results lead us to the conclusion that membrane of several types were prepared by introducing functional group

Joint co-clustering: co-clustering of genomic and clinical bioimaging data

    No full text
AbstractFor better understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying clinical observations, and better defining a group of potential candidates for protein-family-inhibiting therapy, it is interesting to determine the correlations between genomic, clinical data and data coming from high resolution and fluorescent microscopy. We introduce a computational method, called joint co-clustering, that can find co-clusters or groups of genes, bioimaging parameters and clinical traits that are believed to be closely related to each other based on the given empirical information. As bioimaging parameters, we quantify the expression of growth factor receptor EGFR/erb-B family in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) through a fully-automated computer-aided analysis approach. This immunohistochemical analysis is usually performed by pathologists via visual inspection of tissue samples images. Our fully-automated techniques streamlines this error-prone and time-consuming process, thereby facilitating analysis and diagnosis. Experimental results for several real-life datasets demonstrate the high quantitative precision of our approach. The joint co-clustering method was tested with the receptor EGFR/erb-B family data on non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) tissue and identified statistically significant co-clusters of genes, receptor protein expression and clinical traits. The validation of our results with the literature suggest that the proposed method can provide biologically meaningful co-clusters of genes and traits and that it is a very promising approach to analyse large-scale biological data and to study multi-factorial genetic pathologies through their genetic alterations

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

One-year efficacy and safety of single or one to three weekly injections of hylan G-F 20 for knee osteoarthritis: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis

    No full text
The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of single or 1–3 weekly injections of hylan G-F 20 at 1 year following the first injection for knee osteoarthritis (OA). Searches were conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL and included relevant conference proceedings (January 1, 1995–August 17, 2020). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized trials, and observational studies investigating 1-year efficacy and safety of 1–3 weekly injections or single hylan G-F 20 injection for knee OA were included. Primary outcomes were WOMAC pain, physical function, and stiffness. Meta-analyses of RCTs and non-randomized studies were conducted separately. Our search identified 24 eligible studies. Hylan G-F 20, in the meta-analyses of RCTs, showed statistically significant improvement in WOMAC pain (SMCC − 0.98, 95% CI − 1.50, − 0.46), physical function (SMCC − 1.05, 95% CI − 1.28, − 0.83), and stiffness (SMCC − 1.07, 95% CI −1.28, −0.86). Improvement was also seen for VAS pain, SF-36 MCS (mental component summary), and SF-36 PCS (physical component summary). Analyses of non-randomized studies showed similar efficacy estimates. There were no significant differences in efficacy based on injection schedule, nor between RCT and non-randomized studies. Rates of adverse events (AEs) were low for most types of AEs. Hylan G-F 20 (either as single or 1–3 weekly injections) showed improvement in 1-year efficacy outcomes in comparison to baseline and was generally well tolerated. While further research will inform the medical field regarding viscosupplementation treatment options for knee OA, these findings show that hylan G-F 20 at both frequencies/dosages are efficacious and generally well tolerated for long-term use

Free submesh list strategy: A best fit submesh allocation in mesh connected multicomputers

    No full text
The submesh allocation problem is to recognize and locate a free submesh that can accommodate a request for a submesh of a specified size. In this paper, we propose a new best-fit submesh allocation strategy. The proposed strategy maintains and uses a free submesh list to get global information for free submeshes. For an allocation request, the proposed strategy tries to allocate a best-fit submesh which causes the least amount of potential processor fragmentation so as to reserve the large free submeshes as many as possible for later requests. For this purpose, we introduce a novel function for quantifying the degree of potential fragmentation of submeshes. The proposed strategy has the complete submesh recognition capability. Extensive simulation is carried out to compare the proposed strategy with the previous strategies and it is shown that the proposed strategy exhibits the best performance. © World Scientific Publishing Company
