Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

KYUIL YOON: The Fusion of Korean and Western Musical Language

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the music of Kyuil Yoon. His work represents the fusion of Korean folk music with western musical tradition. Kyuil Yoon is a Korean composer born in South Korea in 1970. Yoon’s compositional style is produced by combining Western musical language with traditional Korean music. The formation and development of his music consists of Western methods, but the musical material is made with Korean musical materials including melody, jandan—which is the rhythm of Korean traditional music—and story. Just as Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Béla Bartók incorporated national musical elements in their music, Yoon uses Western musical language as the vehicle for transmitting traditional Korean music. In this document, I will explore general elements of Korean folk music and analyze how those elements are used in three different works of Yoon's works. The works include the Piano Trio no. 2, the 16 Variations on Arirang Theme for 4 Hands at Two Pianos, and the Blue Bird for Piano Solo. All three works are rooted in the following Korean folk songs: Aririang, Jung-sun Arirang, and Bird Bird Blue Bird. The focus will be to identify and explain how Yoon uses Korean folk elements in three different musical genres to produce three contemporary Western-style compositions

ABSTRACTⅰ CONTENTS ⅲ LIST OF FIGURES v ABBREVIATIONS vi Ⅰ. REFERENCE 31 Ⅵ. ABSTRACT IN KOREAN (국문초록) 36MasterObesity has been considered as a risk factor for arthritis. Indeed, recent studies demonstrated that obesity and westernized diet habbits increase the incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and get worse its severity, as well as affect to the drug response of MTX and TNF-α inhibitors. However, full-scale studies on the obesity-RA complex disease are rarely carried out, and the mechanisms have not been elucidated yet. In this study, I set up a new animal model for obesity-RA complex disease, and investigate the function and properties of self-assembled hyaluronic acid (HA) with hydrophobic 5β-CA (CA, HA-CA) nanoparticles (NP), which bind to the CD44 receptor, in the obese RA animal model. Treatment of the obese-RA mice with HA-CA NPs improved morphologic indicators, including clinical score, paw swelling, and incidence, compared to the control group , and also affected the synovitis and pannus formation in the joint tissue, which is prominent characteristics in RA disease. In vitro experiments using SW982 cells (human synovial cell line) revealed that HA-CA NPs suppressed TNF-α- and IL-1β-induced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokine. Thus, these results suggest that an empty self-assembled HA-CA NP itself might be a therapeutic drug candidate for the treatment of RA

In the Filshie clip group there were seven patients with complications while in the Yoon ring group fifteen patients of which three cases finished in laparatomy; difference not significant (c2=2.32; p=0.12) . Conclusions: The Filshie clip and the Yoon ring present similar number of surgical complication. The Filshie clips application is recommended specially in young women by greater probability of reversa

Who Do I See? by S. Yoon

Yoon, Salina. Who Do I See? New York: Random House, 2011. Print. Identifying five adorable animals and remembering five eye-catching colours are the challenges for toddlers and preschool children in Yoon’s book, Who Do I See?. The colourful illustrations are simple two dimensional cartoon drawings of familiar creatures including a fish, a tiger, a turtle, a ladybug, and a parrot. The illustrations of the animals are framed, and partially hidden, by cleverly placed cut out windows. The cut out windows allow readers to feel the shiny foil on the animal illustration such as scales on a fish, and, because the rest of the animal is hidden until the reader flips the page, children can try identifying the animal by thinking about common animal colours and shapes such as the black spots and red wings found on a ladybug. The text does not rhyme but playful repetition of the question and of the typical colours found on these animals will keep children engaged. The thick cardboard pages ensure that the book is not easily damaged. This interactive, guessing-game book will assist children in learning about different animals and different colours.
