Fernandes (Fernandes, E. H.: Modelling the Hydrodynamics of the Patos Lagoon, Brazil, Ph.D. thesis, University of Plymouth, 2001) aimed to calibrate the hydrodynamic model TELEMAC for the Patos Lagoon for the first time. The author executed SPM field measurements at 4 stations: Feitoria, Marambaia, and Praticagem (between 27-29 October, 1998), and at Porto Rei (between 05-06 November, 1998) and measurements were carried out at the surface, middle depth and bottom using horizontal bottle samplers. These consist of a simple PVC pipe closed at the ends by rubber stoppers and released by a messenger sent from the surface. Sub-samples were stored in plastic bottles for further filtration and determination of SPM content. Samples were filtered through CA filters of 45 μm pore size as in Baumgarten et al. (Baumgarten, M., Rocha, J., and Niencheski, L.: Manual de Análises em Oceanografia Química, FURG, Rio Grande, Brazil, 1996)

In the sixteenth century, in Portugal, Gonçalo Fernandes Trancoso writes his Contos e Histórias de Proveito & Exemplo with pedagogical-moralizing intent, disillusioned at the dissolution of the customs brought by the overseas conquests. The author makes use of a resource of the medieval era - the exempla - to show himself as a champion that fights for the values of the Virtue. The purpose of this article is to analyze how the author mounts his preaching stories by analyzing the narrative techniques used to show how these stories have become a pleasurable and uplifting readingNo século XVI, em Portugal, Gonçalo Fernandes Trancoso escreve seus Contos e Histórias de Proveito & Exemplo com intenção pedagógico-moralizante, desiludido ao assistir à dissolução dos costumes trazida pelas conquistas ultramarinas.

Having received little attention from the interpreters of Florestan Fernandes’ work until recently, the author’s migratory studies,  although revisited by specialists in this field, have been the object of implicit or explicit accusations of blame for the poor development of the theme in sociology, and especially at Escola Sociológica Paulista, from  the 1940s onwards. This work aims to respond to this “sociology of abandonment” in the  interpretation of Fernandes’ work, showing, through a systematic interpretation, that the author’s supposed departure from migratory studies did not happen without the provisions of an accumulative movement, characteristic of the formative model that the author fought for.

Abstract : The present work, developed through bibliographical and documentary research, aims to deepen the study of the work of the Brazilian sociologist Florestan Fernandes focusing on the central categories worked by the author to understand the particularity of the socio - historical formation of Brazil. The intellectual itinerary of the sociologist and his elaborations on the colonial and slave order, on the emergence of the bourgeois revolution in Brazil, on the transition from competitive capitalism to monopoly capitalism, on the consolidation of bourgeois autocracy and on democracy of co-optation are discussed. The importance of the work of Fernandes for understanding the socioeconomic and political reality of contemporary Brazil is also discussed

Long Term Effects of Early Embryonic Ethanol Exposure, on Behavioural Performance and Learning in Zebrafish, Danio rerio

    No full text
Background: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a devastating disorder whose mechanisms may be best investigated using animal models. Here we present a novel zebrafish FAS model to investigate the effects of low to moderate alcohol exposure during early development on learning. Methods: At 24-hours postfertilization zebrafish embryos were exposed to low doses of ethanol (external concentrations = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00% vol/vol) for a very short duration (2 hours). Upon adulthood associative learning in the zebrafish was tested in a plus maze. Results: This exposure led to no gross anatomical abnormalities or increased morbidity or mortality. Overall activity was not significantly affected by embryonic ethanol exposure. A trend towards a dose-dependent decrease in learning and memory performance was observed. Conclusions: We suggest that zebrafish will be an appropriate model with which one can analyze the behavioural effects of embryonic alcohol exposure and the mechanisms of the ensuing abnormalities.MAS

Fishing for a Zebrafish model of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: The Behavioural Characterization and a Biological Exploration of the Effects of Embryonic Alcohol Exposure on Zebrafish

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of birth defects in the Western world. Individuals with FASD may suffer from physical deformities and /or behavioural and cognitive impairments that are life long, severely reducing their quality of life while placing a financial burden on society. In order to address the aforementioned issues it is necessary to unravel the mechanisms underlying FASD. Animal models can aid in elucidating the mechanisms involved in FASD. The zebrafish possess a number of behavioural and biological characteristics making them a suitable animal model for FASD research. In the past this species has been used to explore the effects of embryonic alcohol exposure (EAE) on physical features. While a few studies have begun to investigate the impact EAE has on social behaviour, these studies utilized a live group of zebrafish (shoal) to assay the behaviour. Previously, I demonstrated that a computerized shoal could be used to study the behavioural deficits associated with EAE; specifically, I found a dose-dependent decrease in social behaviour in exposed fish. The research presented within this thesis represents an expansion of my previous research. Beginning by optimizing the parameters of the computerized stimulus, I was able to demonstrate that the size and the number of fish within the animated shoal effects the social behaviour of experimental fish. Using the optimized social paradigm, I showed that the deficits in social behaviour caused by EAE are stage-specific and that these social impairments do not subside with age. I used high-pressure liquid chromatography to determine whether the changes in social behaviour caused by EAE were accompanied by changes to the dopamine system, finding that EAE did impair the dopaminergic system. I was also successful at developing a new apparatus that is capable of assaying many behaviours in zebrafish, including associative learning and memory.Ph.D
