From Albania to Brazil: Ismail Kadaré's Broken april and its filmic adaptation, Walter Salles' Abril despedaçado
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro.
Synthesis and characterization of dual-curable epoxyacrylates for polyester cord/rubber applications
In this study, bisphenol-A-based acrylated epoxy oligomers were prepared and utilized to improve the adhesion strength of polyester cords onto rubber. The structure of the oligomers was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and H-1-NMR spectroscopy. Ultraviolet-curable adhesive formulations were prepared by using acrylated epoxy oligomers and applied onto the polyester cord fabric by a dip-coating method and irradiated. Ultraviolet-cured coatings were characterized by thermal and scanning electron microscope analysis, contact angle measurements. In the second stage of the experiment, ultraviolet-cured polyester cords were adhered onto rubber under heat and pressure. The prepared adhesive formulation was expected to improve the adhesion strength. The adhesion strength of the coated material was evaluated by using peel test as a function of the carboxyl/epoxide ratio. The adhesion strength of 18.0N/cm was obtained when the carboxyl/epoxide ratio was set as 1. It was observed that peel strength, contact angle, and surface energy values of acrylated epoxies strongly depend on the acrylic acid content of the oligomer

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Electrical properties and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of polyester yarns with polypyrrole deposition
Polypyrrole was deposited on polyester yarns by vapour phase polymerization technique. Ferric chloride was used as an initiator. In order to determine the effect of the initiator concentration on polymerization process, four different initiator concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mol/l) were used. The effect of the initiator in terms of tensile properties, electrical resistivities and morphological properties of the yarns was investigated. The polypyrrole deposited polyester yarns were then weaved in a handloom to form fabric for the investigation of surface resistivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared analyses illustrated that polypyrrole has penetrated into the yarn structure and the highest polypyrrole deposition was obtained at the initiator concentration of 0.6 mol/l. Also, the highest electromagnetic shielding effectiveness value and the lowest surface resistivity were obtained at this concentration

Frontonia acuminata Butschli 1889
Frontonia acuminata (Ehrenberg, 1833) Bütschli, 1889 Description of the Turkish population: Size about 70–110 × 45–70 µm, usually 80 × 60 µm when live, ratio of length to width about 3:2. When viewed from the ventral or dorsal side, outline is ovoidal with a slightly pointed posterior end, convex left side and concave right side (Figs. 3a, b, d, e; 4a–f); dorso-ventrally compressed about 3–4:1, ventral surface slightly concave in anterior part, dorsal surface distinctly convex in mid part (Fig. 3c). Single ovate macronucleus, 20–25 × 10–12 µm in size and located in anterior body part. Micronucleus 4–5 µm in diameter, usually globular, rarely elliptical in shape, and located in an indentation of the large end of the macronucleus (Figs. 3a; 4b, j, k). Single contractile vacuole with small vesicles located slightly below mid body, opens out with 2–3 excretory pores on the right margin (Figs. 3a–c, e; 4a, 4f). Extrusomes spindle-shaped, about 7–8 µm long, attached perpendicularly to the somatic cortex and forms a dense layer (Figs. 3b, 4g). Cytoplasm colorless with conspicuous dark anterior spot, food vacuoles scattered throughout the cytoplasm and filled with diatoms and filamentous algae (Figs. 3a, 4b–d). Somatic cilia about 8–10-µm-long in vivo, arranged in 40–60 longitudinally ciliary rows of kinetosomes and form sutures (preoral and postoral sutures) in the ventral midline of the cell, 4–5 postoral kineties (Table 1; Figs. 3g, 4b). Preoral suture commences at the vertex of the buccal cavity and extends to the anterior pole and terminates on the dorsal side. Postoral suture extends as a line from the right posterior corner of the buccal cavity to the posterior pole and terminates on the dorsal side (Figs. 3d, e; 4e, f). Oral apparatus is triangular in shape, about 1/4 of the body length, located in the anterior body half, 4 vestibular kineties on the right of the buccal cavity. Three peniculi located of the left wall of the oral cavity, peniculi 1 and 2 composed of 5–6 and peniculus 3–4 kineties. Paroral membrane consists of 1 row of closely spaced kinetosomes, and it surrounds the right margin of the buccal cavity (Table 1; Figs. 3a, d, f; 4e, i). Cells swim moderately fast for short distances and are then motionless for short periods, and rotate around the main body axis as they move.Published as part of Kizildag, Sibel & Yildiz, Ismail, 2019, Morphology and molecular phylogeny of four Frontonia species from Turkey (Protista, Ciliophora), pp. 548-564 in Zootaxa 4609 (3) on pages 553-554, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4609.3.9, http://zenodo.org/record/322806
