Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Geophysical investigation of a mineral (salt) water aquifer in Turkey

The hydrogeological conditions in Uludag (Nilufer River catchment, Bursa, Turkey) were assessed, using time-domain electromagnetic soundings, electrical resistivity and induced polarisation tomography, to detect the most promising zones for new water-well siting, in order to increase the quantity of water for bottling. The hydrogeological model is quite complex: deep mineral and thermal water rises from a main vertical fault which separates two lithological complexes. The highly mineralised (deep) water is naturally mixed with low mineralised water at a shallow depth, 30-40m; the mixed mineral water is found in some surface springs and shallow wells, while the highly mineralised water is found at depth in some unused deep wells located close to the main fault. All the water points (springs and wells) are located inside a "mineral water belt" on the north side of the Nilufer River. The geophysical survey confirmed the hydrogeological model and highlighted four promising zones for well siting (zones with very low electrical resistivity and high induced polarisation anomalies, corresponding to the main water-bearing faults). One of the geophysical anomalies, the furthest from the exploited sources, was verified by means of a test well; the drilling results have confirmed the water mixing mode

Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry

    No full text
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

Internal wave coupling processes in Earth's atmosphere

    No full text
This paper presents a contemporary review of vertical coupling in the atmosphere and ionosphere system induced by internal waves of lower atmospheric origin. Atmospheric waves are primarily generated by meteorological processes, possess a broad range of spatial and temporal scales, and can propagate to the upper atmosphere. A brief summary of internal wave theory is given, focusing on gravity waves, solar tides, planetary Rossby and Kelvin waves. Observations of wave signatures in the upper atmosphere, their relationship with the direct propagation of waves into the upper atmosphere, dynamical and thermal impacts as well as concepts, approaches, and numerical modeling techniques are outlined. Recent progress in studies of sudden stratospheric warming and upper atmospheric variability are discussed in the context of wave-induced vertical coupling between the lower and upper atmosphere. Facial politics of images and media: Mask, body, immunity

How do the types of mask and masking that emerge and proliferate in the 21st-century media ecologies relate to the specific political and techno-aesthetic conditions that characterise this age of connectivity? I address this question by looking at two different functions of the mask that have been discussed separately: facilitation of disguise and of inhabitability. The former is epitomised by the balaclava of the activist, the latter by the protective mask of the physician. My main argument is that these seemingly disparate functions can both be discussed as immunitary capacities. The concept of immunity here is drawn predominantly from the writings of (bio)political philosopher Roberto Esposito. The project accentuates the multiple uses, functions and forms of the mask and what this multiplicity opens up by allowing us to think about the tensions between absence and presence, image and embodiment, inhabitability and uninhabitability, contagion and immunity. The significance of the mask, in this research, pertains to its liminality and its ability to negotiate these dualities. The project investigates the mask as image, medium and technique. That is, the mask is understood as a symbol, a material artefact and a technology. One of the key references for this taxonomy is German art historian Hans Belting’s theorisation of the triad of image, medium and body in the book, An Anthropology of Images. I discuss the processes of mask and masking through the media theoretical conceptualisation of ‘cultural techniques,’ of which Bernhard Siegert and Thomas Macho are central theorists.</p

How Effective Was E-Applied Gastronomy Education During the Covid-19 Era? Opinions of Students and Lecturers: the Case of Türkiye

Sahin Percin, Nilufer/0000-0002-7063-3247; YIGIT, Serkan/0000-0003-1284-7236The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of the students and lecturers of the gastronomy department, about e-applied gastronomy education during the COVID-19 era and to determine whether the e-applied gastronomy education is successful or not. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 37 participants following the qualitative methodology. As a result, two main themes: positive aspects of e-applied gastronomy education and (ii) challenges of e-applied gastronomy education, and 10 sub-themes related to these themes were revealed. As a result of the study the lecturers, and students and who participated in the study are of the opinion that e-applied gastronomy education during the COVID-19 period has been unsuccessful. The finding that e-applied courses are ineffective, which is a widely held belief among lecturers and students, can be seen as the strongest evidence to support this view
