Malaysia is one of the industrializing and emerging countries that willing to undertake the rapid economic change and investing in more productive capacity. The contribution of output and employment from the manufacturing sector has been steadily increasing, while the economy from industrial era has shifted to information era; focusing more on knowledge-based economy. Manufacturing companies in Malaysia are facing challenges and opportunities from a rapidly changing operating environment and industrial revolution, generation of new sustainable value chain systems, and contribution to the knowledge-based economy. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of tacit and knowledge sharing on organizational performance among manufacturing companies in Malaysia. This quantitative study would provide an insight on the importance and effects of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing toward organizational performance among Malaysia’s manufacturing companies. The key underpinning theory of this study is Knowledge-based View (KBV). Data were obtained from 145 manufacturing companies in Malaysia via the representative of Production Managers. This study provides fundamental knowledge and direction for researchers in further research as well as practitioners to constantly improve their organizational performance through the stimulation of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing practices

Angiotensin II induces soluble fms-Like tyrosine kinase-1 release via calcineurin signaling pathway in pregnancy

    No full text
Maternal endothelial dysfunction in preeclampsia is associated with increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), a circulating antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a potent vasoconstrictor that increases concomitant with sFlt-1 during pregnancy. Therefore, we speculated that Ang II may promote the expression of sFlt-1 in pregnancy. Here we report that infusion of Ang II significantly increases circulating levels of sFlt-1 in pregnant mice, thereby demonstrating that Ang II is a regulator of sFlt-1 secretion in vivo. Furthermore, Ang II stimulated sFlt-1 production in a dose- and time-dependent manner from human villous explants and cultured trophoblasts but not from endothelial cells, suggesting that trophoblasts are the primary source of sFlt-1 during pregnancy. As expected, Ang II-induced sFlt-1 secretion resulted in the inhibition of endothelial cell migration and in vitro tube formation. In vitro and in vivo studies with losartan, small interfering RNA specific for calcineurin and FK506 demonstrated that Ang II-mediated sFlt-1 release was via Ang II type 1 receptor activation and calcineurin signaling, respectively. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized regulatory role for Ang II on sFlt-1 expression in murine and human pregnancy and suggest that elevated sFlt-1 levels in preeclampsia may be caused by a dysregulation of the local renin/angiotensin system

Period of Transition: Soap Opera on Television, 1963-1986 Abstract: This narrates the history of the televisual soap opera between 1963 and 1986, described by the author as the “Period of Transition.” This traces the transition of the soap opera from radio to the new medium of television during the 60s to 1986, the year of the ouster of the Marcos dictatorship. Foregrounding this is a recounting of the birth of the television industry amidst the intersecting interests of the oligarchic families in politics and business as they invested in it. It will be surmised that the soap opera was a product of the tumultuous history of the Philippines, and the history of television, as it had continued to exist despite the disruption and the consequent hampered growth of the medium during the dictatorship. Seven soap operas are showcased here, representing the aforementioned transition process.

Given the reality of our neocolonial situation, the discipline of literary study fulfills its received pedagogical function of converting reason-bearing individuals into obedient subjects. This normative ideology represses criticism, concealing the lived experience of exploitation and class conficts. The concept of ideology itself is suppressed, replaced with accepted terms and approved habits of interpretation. Meanings of art-works are identified with the single author’s identity, thus ignoring or excluding their enabling contexts and institutional practices. Using a symptomatic, historicist reading of Lualhati Bautista’s novel as an example, this essay argues that the ideology of texts differs from that of the author owing to diverse mediating factors. Current forces of alienation and reification intervene. Through their own mechanisms of interpellation, texts transform readers into subjects who attempt to imaginarily resolve real social contradictions. Given our multilingual and multiethnic audience, the choice of language for literary expression becomes crucial in the process of articulating textual meanings as multifaceted, dynamic reflections of specific conjunctures in Philippine history

Abstract : Recent studies propose that Film Adaptations should be understood as sources of creation, which also reflect a different context and interpretation from the text upon which they were based. In this thesis, I propose a comparative analysis of the novel Life of Pi (2001), by Yann Martel, and the homonymous film directed by Ang Lee (2012). The analysis has the objective of identifying the presence and the way in which metafiction is constructed in the novel and in the film, and what are some of the meanings produced by it in both texts, the filmic and the literary. The concept of metafiction was based on the definitions by Linda Hutcheon and Patricia Waugh. It is understood as the self-conscious fictional text, which exposes the writing process to the readers and invites them to have an active role in the construction of meaning. In the comparative analyses of the two texts, I have proved that metafiction is present in the two texts, both thematically and structurally. The reflections of the characters on narrative itself as well as the use of different narrative levels and intertextual references reveal different uses of metanarrative in both film and novel. The most important difference between the novel and the film Life of Pi is in their uses of different narrative levels. While the novel has an unnamed =author? who presents the story to the readers, the film has an implicit director who leaves =clues? of which version of Pi?s story is ?real? in the context of the narrative. This difference gives to the novel an open end, facein which the readers must choose which version of the story they believe in, while the film presents a resolution to this question. The film, thus, can be understood as a testimony narrative, a narrative of the trauma of a survivor from a shipwreck and from the experience of migration, while the novel does not decide for one of the versions of the story, enabling a more inconclusive reading

TRPC6 Up-Regulation in Ang II-Induced Podocyte Apoptosis Might Result from ERK Activation and NF-kappa B Translocation

    No full text
Angiotensin II (Ang II) has been recognized as an apoptosis inducer in podocytes, but the mechanism of apoptosis induced by Ang II is unclear. Transient receptor potential cation channel 6 (TRPC6) is a calcium channel located in podocyte membrane. The present study evaluated the alteration of TRPC6 expression and the Ca(2+) influx involved in Ang II-induced podocyte apoptosis. The possible pathways related to TRPC6 in Ang II-induced podocyte apoptosis were also investigated. The apoptosis of mouse podocytes (MPC5) was induced by Ang II. The protein level of TRPC6 was increased markedly in response to Ang II stimulation, and the intracellular Ca(2+) concentration was elevated. By transfection with TRPC6 siRNA, Ang II-induced podocyte apoptosis and the transient Ca(2+) influx were inhibited. Treated with extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway specific inhibitor U0126 or nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) pathway specific inhibitor ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (PDTC) and Ang II, respectively in podocytes, not only was the TRPC6 up-regulation reduced, but the podocyte apoptosis was also decreased. Moreover, the translocation of NF-kappa B in nucleus resulted from Ang II was reduced by treatment with U0126. In conclusion, the enhancement expression of TRPC6 as well as the increased Ca(2+) influx mediated by TRPC6 channels contributed to the podocyte apoptosis. The activation of ERK pathway and subsequent translocation of NF-kappa B was possibly necessary for the up-regulation TRPC6 induced by Ang It. Reusing software tests for configuration testing: A case study of the Hadoop project

    No full text
Configuration is an inseparable piece of today’s software development. Due to its dynamic nature and lack of standardized checking procedure, misconfiguration has been one of the dominant factors contributing to software failures in production and wide spread outages. Existing techniques (static validation, system tests, canaries, etc.) for detecting misconfigurations have limitations, either being too coarse grained and unable to precisely exercise the changed configuration value, or not considering the interaction between configuration and software source code. Configuration testing takes pages from traditional software testing practices to test software configurations in a similar vein as how software code is tested. This thesis makes a first step exploration towards configuration testing, focusing on analyzing feasibility and effectiveness of reusing existing source code tests to test configuration values. Through building a semi-automated infrastructure associating unit tests with configuration parameters, and later run the associated tests against injected correct and incorrect configuration values for each parameter, this thesis shows that reusing existing software test for configuration testing directly could yield an effective rate of 41.7% and 48.8%, for Hadoop Common and HDFS, respectively. Further, this thesis conducts in-depth analysis on tests that cannot be effectively reused, categorizes code patterns of these tests that have false positives or negatives, and provides examples on rewriting these tests.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2021-12-01The student, Ran Ang, accepted the attached license on 2019-12-07 at 18:18.The student, Ran Ang, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-12-07 at 18:24.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-12-09 at 10:22.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14752 on 2020-02-28 at 17:23:55Made available in DSpace on 2020-03-02T22:15:15Z (GMT).
