Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The influence of governance on tourism firm performance

    No full text
Corporate governance is a critical mechanism for the success of any firm. In the tourism sector, however, the issue of governance has attracted little research attention. This study enriches the literature on tourism governance by investigating how board size, the proportion of large shareholders and gender diversity on boards affect the financial performance of tourism firms. The sample data were obtained from publicly traded tourism firms in Taiwan. Ordinary least square regressions and two-stage least square regressions were conducted to test the hypotheses. The results show that board size is negatively related to performance and that the presence of large shareholders has a significant influence on tourism firms' return on assets and Tobin's Q. The influence of gender diversity on firm performance, however, was inconsistent. These governance variables are also confirmed as endogenous variables in the tourism sector.補正完畢國外SSCIY電子版GB

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Board governance and tourism firms' performance: The case of Taiwan

    No full text
The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of board independence, CEO duality and managerial ownership on performance of tourism firms, measured by return on assets (ROA). The sample included seven publicly traded hotels in Taiwan. Ordinary least square (OLS) regression and two-stage least square (2SLS) regression were performed to test the hypotheses. The results demonstrate that performance of hotel firms had a significantly positive relationship with board independence and CEO duality. Board independence, CEO duality and managerial ownership were confirmed as endogenous variables. The results can help hotel firms realize the influence of board governance on performance and accordingly establish governance systems.補正完畢國外EI紙本US

Critical accommodation information for travel opinion leader

    Get PDF
Potential tourists search for accommodation information once they decide to travel. Travel opinion leaders are critical accommodation information providers for potential tourists. However, we know little about travel opinion leaders’ perceived importance of accommodation information. The current study examined the relationship between travel opinion leadership and perceived importance of accommodation information. Results showed that there were significant differences in the perception of important accommodation information between the high and low travel opinion leadership groups. These results make theoretical and practical implications for tourism research and accommodation managers

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The influence of foreign institutional investors, institutional directors, and the share pledge ratio of directors on financial performance of tourism firms

    No full text
Corporate governance is a critical component relevant to firm performance. In the tourism sector, corporate governance is an underexamined issue. The purpose of the current study is to bridge this gap by examining the influence of foreign institutional investors, institutional directors, and shares pledged by directors on tourism firms’ financial performance. Data are derived from listed tourism firms in Taiwan. Ordinary least square regressions and two-stage least square regressions are used to examine the hypotheses. Results show that the presence of foreign institutional investors and a low share pledge ratio of directors have significant effects on return on assets and Tobin’s Q. The presence of institutional directors has a positive effect on Tobin’s Q. Implications for owners, policy makers, and investors are discussed.補正完

The signaling roles of ownership and board structure for foreign institutional investors in the tourism industry

    No full text
Foreign institutional capital performs a critical role in the development of the tourism industry. Little research has been conducted to understand how foreign institutional investors choose tourism firms from the governance perspective. The primary purpose of the current study is to bridge this research gap by examining the signaling roles of CEO ownership, domestic institutional ownership, and institutional directors in preferences of foreign institutional investors. Outcomes show foreign institutional investors are more likely to invest in tourism firms who have higher CEO ownership, lower domestic institutional ownership, and a higher level of institutional directors. Implications and limitations are accordingly discussed.補正完

Access is restricted indefinitely. ----- This thesis investigates the relationship between recruitment and selection theory and practices in Taiwanese sport organisations. A number of studies have indicated that the Taiwanese sport industry is growing and more and more Taiwanese sport organisations are expected to be established. In the given situation, Taiwanese sport organisations will be in the demands of hiring employees. However, the research on recruitment and selection of sport organisations has attracted less attention in Taiwanese sport management. The purpose of the current research is to bridge the gap. The current research proposes that organisational thoughts lead organisational behaviours but various factors may also influence organisational behaviours. Consequently, three subquestions are asked to assist in examining the recruitment and selection of Taiwanese sport organisations. Theories and methods of recruitment and selection are analysed. The main theoretical perspectives taken in this thesis build on Person-Organisation (P-0) fit model and Resource-Based theory. Case study is used by current research because in-depth investigations can be reached. One club respectively from Taiwanese baseball and basketball leagues participated voluntarily in the current research. Document analysis and unstructured interviews were conducted to collect the data. The principal conclusion reached is that referral and internet recruitment are the tools used by partnership clubs to create a pool of job candidates. Resume checks and unstructured interviews are the vehicles they use to screen out unqualified job candidates. P-0 fit are reached by both partnership clubs and a resource-based view is taken into consideration when one of the partnership clubs hires employees. The findings have implications for sport managers and human resource professionals
