Exploring Yeh Pulu Relief (an Iconography Approach)

    No full text
Yeh Pulu relief, located in Bedulu Village, Gianyar Regency, is one of the important Balinese visual art work. It serves as a proof of the ultimate artistic achievement in the ancient Balinese kingdom era. It possesses some distinctive characteristics, such as a particular style of figuration, a specific theme, and unique sculptural characters. There are very few articles focusing on this topic. Therefore, there is a need to explore Yeh Pulu relief by conducting an in-depth research. Based on Panofsky's iconography perspective, this research aims to analyze stylistic figurations of the relief, the theme, the sculptural characters and the meaning of the depiction. Panofsky's iconography consists of three levels of analysis, i.e. pre-iconography, iconography and iconology. Employing his theory, the first stage of this analysis focuses on the physical characters on the relief; the second stage focuses on the concept of narration; and the third one deals with discourse around the subject of this study. The image of Yeh Pulu relief very clearly reveals the theme of heroism found in the everyday life by ordinary people. The result of this research is defined of the theme is reinforced by the figuration of the relief's subjects that tends to be realistic (using the body proportion of a normal adult human) and is complemented by carvings of plant tendrils that are nearly naturalistic in style. The research participants are I Nengah Sudika Negara (data collector), Luh Desi in Diana Sari (layout designer), and Anak Agung Udayana (photographer).Relief Yeh Pulu, lokasi di Desa Bedulu, Kabupaten Gianyar merupakan salah satu karya seni rupa terpenting. Anggota peneliti di antaranya: I Nengah Sudika Negara (pengumpul data), Luh Desi in Diana Sari (layout desain), dan Anak Agung Udayana (fotografer)

The Yeh-Stratton Criterion for Stress Concentrations in Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to investigate the Yeh-Stratton Failure Criterion with the stress concentrations in fiber-reinforced composites materials under tensile loadings. The Yeh-Stratton Failure Criterion developed from the initial yielding of materials is based on a macromechanics point of view. To investigate this criterion, the influence of the material anisotropic properties and the far field loading on the composite materials with a central hole or a normal crack were studied. Special emphasis was placed on definng of the crack tip stress field and their applications. The study of the Yeh-Stratton criterion for damage zone stress field on fiber-reinforced composites under tensile loadings was compared with several other fracture criteria, including the Tasi-Wu Theory, the Hoffman Theory, the Fischer Criterion, and the Cowin Criterion. The theoretical predictions from these criteria are examined by experimental results.</jats:p

Localising Pop Yeh Yeh With Malay Musical Elements And Language In The 1960s

    No full text
The term ‘Pop Yeh Yeh’ refers to the genre of Malay popular music that emerged in the 1960s in Malaysia and Singapore influenced by western acts like The Beatles, The Shadows, and The Rolling Stones from the United Kingdom. The music of Pop Yeh Yeh was accompanied by a kugiran (upbeat guitar band) consisting of three guitars and a drum set, mirroring the configuration used by the Western bands of the era. Pop Yeh Yeh music faced disapproval from seasoned musicians who viewed the musicians as amateurs who had no music education and produced songs of poor quality. Through in-depth interviews with people in the music industry and analysing the music of local musicians recorded on vinyl records, this thesis shows that Pop Yeh Yeh music was inspired by and shared many similar characteristics with the popular bands and music of the United Kingdom in the 1960s. Although Pop Yeh Yeh was initially imitative of Western pop styles, local musicians such as L. Ramli and A. Rahman Hassan with their bands Orkes Teruna Ria and Orkes Nirwana eventually localized their music by integrating Malay asli vocal styles, the Malay language, and lyrics about Malaysian life with Western surf rock rhythms, vocal harmonies, and musical form. They also created album covers that illustrated people in Malaysian-style clothing, and scenes from Malaysia. This study shows that although Pop Yeh Yeh music followed western musical styles, local musicians included Malay characteristics and musical elements that made it unique to Malaysia
