The structure of the oxide/aqueous electrolyte interface
Deposited with permission of the author. © 1975 David Edwin Yates. The structure of the oxide/aqueous electrolyte interface has been studied. The surface porosity of several oxides to ions is evaluated and the contribution of such porosity to the double layer properties determined by surface charge measurements. The oxides studied are B.D.H. precipitated silica, before and after heat treatment, rutile, goethite, hematite and amorphous ferric oxide. The surface porosity was evaluated using nitrogen adsorption for physical porosity, tritium exchange for surface hydration and dissolution for surface crystallinity. It is found that the surfaces of metal oxides may be divided into two categories; those that are porous to ions and those that are non-porous. Of those studied only the precipitated silica and the amorphous ferric oxide are porous. The porosity is probably due to an easily permeated layer of hydrolysed oxidic material. It does lead to exceptionally high surface charges. However the non-porous oxides also exhibit high surface charges so that while surface porosity may, in some cases, contribute to oxide double layer properties, it cannot be a general explanation of the high differential capacities observed. A site-binding model for non-porous oxide/aqueous electrolyte interfaces is introduced, in which it is proposed that the adsorbed counter ions form interfacial ion pairs with discrete charged surface groups. This model is used to calculate theoretical surface charge densities and potentials at the Outer Helmholtz Plane. The calculated values are consistent with experimental data for oxides provided a high value of the inner zone capacity is accepted. An explanation is provided for the difference between silica and most other oxides in terms of the dissociation constants of the surface groups
Cult: A Composite Novel
Cult (redacted)
The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence.
Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults.
The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic.
Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form
The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts
VALORIZATION OF BY-PRODUCT OF WINDOWPANE OYSTER Placuna placenta SHELL PROCESSING
The windowpane oyster, Placuna placenta, derives its trivial name from the use of its translucent shells to make windows, a common practice in SE Asia prior to the establishment of industrial glass production, and one maintained in historical buildings. Many objects are made from this material, such as ornaments and Christmas decorations. However, over exploitation has led to a decline of the oyster beds. This not only impacts on the revenue of oyster harvesting communities and the country, but also on local ecosystems and shoreline stability. There are two by-products from the oyster, the meat and the extensive slime. Some of the former is consumed locally, though much is either donated to aquaculturists as food or discarded, whereas the latter is always discarded.
This thesis aimed to establish the means to develop food products of commercial value from the windowpane oyster meat and to establish whether the slime might contain molecules with commercial potential. Achieving this aim would provide a blueprint to establish full exploitation of the oyster, enhancing local incomes and potentially increasing efforts to maintain and expand the oyster beds.
It was important understand the practices of oyster harvesters, their socio-economic status and attitudes to the development of new food products particularly since only historical data were available for the former. Consequently, a survey and documentation of practices was done in the province of Bataan, Philippines to assess existing practices regarding the fishery, “kapis” handicraft making and by-product management of the windowpane oyster shell processing industry and identify those which would be suitable for adoption or innovation. The respondents were all in a precarious socio-economic position, occupying the bottom two deciles of Filipino average income. The only parameter that cross correlated was gender and paid labour; men dominating paid labour and women performing many unpaid tasks, such as shucking the oysters. In contrast, parameters such as the frequency and quantity of shells gathered each week, the amount of meat consumed, and the quantity of shells used in handicrafts were not associated with the respondents' age, marital status, education level, or gender.
The windowpane oyster meat was underutilized by the respondents in Bataan, despite their precarious socio-economic position. This indicated that, despite being widely known as edible, and being consumed locally, there was a lack of knowledge and support for its processing in a manner suitable for the production of added-value foods that could be sold. However, the respondents were very positive regarding the adoption of new programs on the utilization of by-products or waste from the bivalve when introduced, including food products derived from the meat, because most of them felt that there is a market for windowpane oyster products and that the products are safe for consumption based on their personal experience.
Windowpane oyster meat collected on three separate occasions was then subjected to biochemical analysis to assess its nutrient composition and safety important parameters for making value-added foods. Results of proximate analysis and chemical tests of the fresh and precooked windowpane oyster meat demonstrated that this bivalve is an inexpensive and nutritious substitute not only to shellfish, but also poultry and red meats. It had a high amount of protein and important macro and microminerals and contained phenolics and carotenoids which contributed to its antioxidant activity. Although it had more saturated fatty acids than other bivalves, it also had considerable monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids important for human diet. Microbiological analyses demonstrated that the windowpane oyster meat was safe for human consumption, because of the low aerobic plate count and coliform count and absence of Escherichia coli, Salmonella species and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the precooked meat. The results suggested that either pathogens were not initially present or could be destroyed by the precooking done. The levels of toxic heavy metals were all below the limits set by international agencies, Food Standards Agency-UK, FSANZ (2016), and FAO-LEX. The one exception was arsenic, the limits for which are only stated in the New Zealand FSANZ (2016) standards; in one of the three samples the levels of arsenic were above this limit. However, mixing of the samples would reduce the levels to within the limits. Moreover, this one sample deviated in many parameters from the other two, suggesting an unknown seasonal or local environmental effect. This highlighted that while the oyster meat is safe for the processing value-added food products, further analysis of samples at greater time resolution and from more locations would help understand the sources of such variation.
The windowpane oyster meat was used to develop three food products, based on the focus groups discussion conducted and on popularity of particular products amongst Filipinos. Thermally processed windowpane oyster “adobo” and marinara sauce can be considered healthy and safe for human consumption, with shelf life of at least a year based on the microbial analysis and commercial sterility tests that were done. The oysters and the other ingredients added affected the nutritional value and health benefits from the products. After lactic acid fermentation of the salted fresh windowpane oyster, pH and proximate composition changed depending on fermentation time. Drying and pulverization of the fermented oysters produced a stable product since this had a very low water activity. The windowpane oyster products were moderately liked following sensory evaluation by panels of respondents, and the data distribution indicated that there would be a market for these products. Thus, the respondents generally stated that if the thermally processed windowpane oyster “adobo” and marinara sauce are commercially available, they would probably buy the “adobo” and would definitely buy the marinara sauce. The products are promising because majority of the sensory panelists agreed that these are just about right in terms of the attributes evaluated. This work did highlight that blind testing versus the same products made with other native shellfish would provide valuable data since some of the sensory evaluation responses may have been affected by the fact that the respondents had never eaten windowpane oyster meat previously.
A preliminary fractionation of the windowpane oyster slime was undertaken using dialysis. This was followed by measurement of protein and uronic acid content, mild acid hydrolysis, fractionation on a C8 reverse phase bond elute column and SDS-PAGE. The data demonstrate that the slime contained some protein and considerable amounts of polysaccharides, as well as molecules that were acid labile and contained aromatics. Given the presence of uronic acids and proton NMR chemical shifts consistent with glycosaminoglycans, it seems likely that some of the polysaccharides may belong to this class of sugars. These data indicate that a programme to undertake an in-depth analysis of the slime would be likely to identify bioactive components of commercial value. Such a programme would combine activity assays, such as those for coagulation and fractionation to provide evidence for the structures of the molecules present and their amounts

The visceral screen: Between the cinemas of John Cassavetes and David Cronenberg, a Barthesian perspective
The thesis discusses two directors who are never considered together in academic discourse. Cassavetes’ perceived focus on events led by the dynamics of performance and his looseness of technique opposes the calculated compositions of the Cronenberg film, with its aesthetic of horrific images and its gallery of emotionally detached protagonists. Yet it is between such opposing methods of cinematic expression that the ineffable qualities of film aesthetics can be discovered. Cassavetes’ cinema achieves this by revelling in a surplus of activity that exceeds narrative, while the indescribable characteristics of the Cronenberg oeuvre is achieved through a systematic emptying of the image’s meaning through a simultaneous commitment to paring back emotion and portraying of images that are controversial and inconceivable. Taken together, the thesis identifies these aspects of film as ‘the visceral,’ a facet of the moving image that most certainly exists, but is resolutely, and disturbingly resistant to interpretation.
Roland Barthes’ writings are integral to a theory of the visceral. His re-evaluation of Saussurean semiology as a method of analyzing and undoing ideologically-imposed meanings informs readings of sequences from Cassavetes and Cronenberg’s films. Following Barthes, the thesis suggests that the existence of the visceral is realized as a resistance to ideological interpretations of the image, and so cannot be described. Ultimately, the inability of semiology to fully grasp certain aspects of the filmed image is put forward as a rejoinder to theories of the fiction film as principally a narrative medium
A reading of Thoreau's walking as a travel narrative
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente. This thesis analyzes Henry David Thoreau's essay "Walking," first published after his death in 1862, with respect to the history of the United States and European travel accounts in Imperial times. Attentive reader of European nature writers and explorers, Thoreau was recalled by poets and literature writers, and also became celebrated by the field of environmental studies, being referred as founder of ecology. Thoreau's walks in wilderness, accounted in "Walking," contradict and at the same time endorse the means through which the United States people were running west at the time: he frequently goes in the same direction, but shows no hurry to get at any place, and calmly searches for what is "holy" along the path. Thoreau's emphatic discourse against private property confronts the main United State's principles, while the author creates his figure as a hero of the individual rebelliousness, a defendant of his own way to walk. Like in other travel accounts where the narrator finds himself in an uncivilized space, the "I," who is the hero of the narrative, sees his western horizon as empty of culture, a place to be founded, this time, upon a new mythology grounded on nature. "Walking" is read here as a transcendental manifesto about movement and perception that is much related to the history of its composition and to its readings since then.
The author construes Mordiendo el frío, a poem book by the Ecuadorian writer Edwin Madrid. He does so in the light of philosopher Alain Badiou’s assertion: that current poetry has only an a esthetic responsibility, and not philosophical anymore. Barreto claims that Madrid shows us the detachment between philosophy and modern poetry, he achieves this by using colloquial language, humor, and the joyful sexual flippancy of Valerio, the poetic character of the book. According to Barreto, the poetic language, void of meaning, does not grasp the person’s experience: it turns out to be a mere report. This wariness about poetry and lyric language is a veiled criticism to the institutionalization of the genre, the author adds. Hence, this piece would show the lyric exhaustion of certain modern poetry. Barreto proposes that such exhaustion is embedded in the globalized conditions of today’s society, and that it plays a part in the death of experience of the modern person. Madrid closes with not lamenting the break up between philosophy and poetry, on the contrary, he strives to devise new sensitivities, marked by the everyday of post-modernism
